One hundred sixty-eight pigs were used to evaluate the effect of soybean processing on starter pig performance and nutrient digestibility. Soybean products tested were commercial soybean meal, full-fat roasted soybeans from either a Roast-A-Tron or Rickles Roaster, extruded soybeans, and steam-flaked soybeans. Pigs fed soybeans from the Rickles Roaster had lower average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed efficiency than pigs fed the other soybean products. Rickles soybeans had lower apparent digestibility of nitrogen, dry matter, total fat, and long chain fatty acids than the other treatments. Pigs fed steam-flaked soybeans had the second lowest growth rate. These …

There has been no appreciable change in the reproduction status of Kansas dairy herds over the last 25 yr. For example, the average calving interval was 398 days in 1965 and 405 days in 1988. Analysis of other measures show similar results. Although the long-stated management goal for a dairy herd has been a calf-a-year or 365-day calving interval, few herds realize this efficiency. On the positive side, the stability of reproductive performance is noteworthy, since genetic antagonism exists between production and reproduction. Sixty-four Holstein heifer calves were used from 10 to 26 wk of age to study the effects of lasalocid on growth and feed consumption. Calves were evaluated weekly for weight gain and feed consumption. Lasalocid-fed heifers gained slightly, but not significantly, more than those that did not receive lasalocid. Calves were bottle-fed milk replacers at 10% of weekly adjusted body weight for 8 wk. Treatments were 1) no supplements (control), 2) .16 oz vitamin C, or 3) .16 oz vitamin C plus 125 IU/lb vitamin E. Lymphocytes and neutrophils isolated from day 14 and day 28 blood samples were assayed for neutrophil-mediated S. aureus phagocytosis and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, and for mitogen induced lymphocyte proliferation. Intensive-early stocking (lES) in the Kansas Flint Hills has greatly increased livestock production efficiency. The potential for grazing of regrowth on IES pastures the following winter was studied by mowing different plots on a monthly basis from October to April, 19831985. Winter herbage removal had no significant effect on herbage production in the following seasons or on the total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) of big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) rhizomes. Since there was no reduction in herbage yield for any mowing date, cattle producers can apparently restock IES pastures after October 1.

Interseeded grain sorghum and soybeans have been evaluated as a silage crop over a 3year period. In the first 2 years, maximum dry matter (DM) yields occurred at the late-dough stage of the grain sorghum, and interseeded silages had higher crude protein (CP) and acid detergent fiber contents than non-interseeded late-dough stage, grain sorghum control silages. In year 2, seeding grain sorghum and soybeans in alternating IS-inch rows increased DM yield, CP content, and the proportion of soybean plants in the mixture compared to drilled (6-inch spacing) interseeding. Ninety-six pigs (17 d of age and 11.6 lb initial wt) were utilized to determine if adding emulsifiers (lecithin and lysolecithin) to diets containing 10% added fat would affect nutrient digestibility. Fat sources were: 1) soybean oil, 2) tallow, 3) lard, and 4) coconut oil. Lecithin and lysolecithin were added as 10% of the added fat. Pigs were limit fed using the following equation: daily feed allowance = .05 x body wt^9. After a 7-d adjustment period, feces were collected for 4 d, pooled, and analyzed for fat, nitrogen, and energy content. Soybean oil and coconut oil were more digestible …

One hundred eighty pigs (21 d of age and averaging 14.5 lb) were used to determine if a milk replacer containing soybean protein isolate can replace dried skim milk and dried whey in a high nutrient density starter diet. Pigs received pelleted feeds that were: 1) corn-soybean meal control; 2) a high nutrient density diet (HNDD) containing 20% dried skim milk and 20% dried whey; 3 and 4) diet 2 with milk rcplacer substituted for 50% and 100% of the milk products; 5) corn-milk replacer; 6) corn-milk products. One litter of 12 piglets was used in a completely random design to evaluate the effects of hydrocortisone acetate injections on organ weight and carbohydrase activities. Dams' milk was the only food source available to the piglets. When they were 7 d old, six pigs were injected with hydrocortisone acetate (50 mg/kg BW; 50 mg/ml) and six others were injected with an equal volume of saline (1 ml/kg BW). Results of four simulated production systems indicated that high levels of milk produced calves that were heavier at weaning, primarily because of an increase in body fat. High levels of milk production, however, were a disadvantage when calves went directly to the feedlot. With slow-growing calves, the fat either had to be depleted postweaning, or the calves had to be slaughtered at less-than-desirable weights in order to maintain desirable carcass fat. High milk intake is more tolerable for calves with fast growth rates, whereas low milk intake is a an economic necessity for calves with slow growth rates. The moderate …

Limit-feeding a high protein creep (36% CP) and a high energy creep (16% CP) was compared with no supplementation in a 61-day preweaning trial. Salt was used to limit daily creep intake to 1.5 to 2.0 lb per head. Calves given the limited energy and protein creep feeds outgained (P<.01) the unsupplemented calves by 0.2 lb and 0.3 lb, respectively. Conversion of creep feed consumed to extra gain was 6.7 and 5.3 for the energy and protein creep-fed calves, respectively (salt included). Trucking shrink of the noncreep-fed calves on the day of weaning and shipping was 4.9 lb and 7.0 lb less (P<.05) than that of the energy and protein creep-fed calves, respectively. Postweaning daily gains of the energy creep-fed calves was higher than those of both the protein creep-fed calves (P=.09) and the noncreep-fed calves (P<.01) by 0.3 lb and 0.5 lb, respectively. The energy creep-fed calves consumed more (P<.05) daily dry matter than the protein creep-fed and unsupplemented calves. Little difference was observed in postweaning feed conversion among creep treatments.

Intake of dormant, bluestem-range forage was increased by feeding steers supplements based on wheat middlings or soybean meal + sorghum grain, although the degree of influence on forage intake depended on type and level of supplementation. All supplements increased (P<.10) total diet digestibility. However, fiber digestibility tended to be slightly lower for steers receiving the high level of wheat middlings and the soybean meal + sorghum grain supplement.

Whole-plant corn silages were treated with Ecosyl® or Foraform® in one trial and Biomate® or Biomate + Cold-flo® in the second trial. In both trials, the silages were well preserved, but all were highly unstable in air during the first 3 to 4 weeks of the feed-out period. Foraform-treated silage was 2 to 6 degrees F cooler than its control, but Cold-flo-treated silage was 2 to 8 degrees F warmer during the first 10 days post-filling. Eighty-seven 3/8 Simmental x 5/8 Hereford heifers calved at 2 years of age and were designated as Single-Calf-Heifers (SCH). Twenty-six heifer mates that did not calve were designated as 2-year-old open heifers (2-OH), and 22, 1 year-old open heifers (1-OH) from the same source served as controls. All heifer groups were fed a high-grain diet for 112 to 137 days before slaughter. The SCH were started on feed about 1 month after calving, and their calves were weaned early about 5 weeks prior to slaughter. Thirty-three of the SCH were implanted with Synovex-H® after calving. Two hundred fifty-five pigs, weaned at 4 wk of age, were used in an experiment to compare the efficacy of Bacillus subtilis and antibiotics as growth promoters for swine from nursery to finishing. Treatments were a nonmedicated control; B. subtilis added at 5 x 105, 1 X 106, or 5 x 106 CFU/g feed; or antibiotics (50 g/ton carbadox during the nursery phase and 100 g/ton chlortetracycline in the growing and finishing phases). Sixteen barrows were used in a metabolism study (avg wt of 101.2 lb) to evaluate the effect of dietary energy density and porcine somatotropin (pST) on apparent digestibility and retention of nutrients in finishing pigs. This study was designed as a split-plot with 4 mg pST/d or placebo injection as whole plot treatments and four dietary energy densities (1.37, 1.48, 1.60, and 1.71 Meal ME/lb) and period as the subplot treatments. Increasing dietary energy density increased apparent digestibility of dry matter, gross energy, and nitrogen, but had no effect on nitrogen retention. We examined the effects of flushing (3.4 lb additional ground milo for approximately 2 wk before insemination) and pubertal status (inseminated at puberty or postpuberty) on ovulation rate and litter traits in gilts. Hushing resulted in 1.1 more eggs released at ovulation and 1.3 more pigs/litter. The response in litter size occurred primarily among gilts inseminated at their pubertal estrus. Neither flushing nor pubertal status affected prenatal survival. Data for 58 gilts were used to evaluate the relationship between ovulation rate and litter size. As consumer resistance to fatter meats has increased, the industry has had two options, 1) argue against popular opinion that fat consumption posed a health risk or 2) strive to reduce the fatness of their products. The femur, a rib, and third phalanx of the second digit from the front foot were collected from 108 barrows (initial wt = 125 lb) and analyzed to determine the effects of porcine somatotropin (pST) and dietary lysine on bone mineralization and mechanical properties. In Exp. 1, pigs were injected daily with 4 mg pST and fed diets containing .6, .8, 1.0, 1.2, or 1.4% lysine; 1.0% Ca; and .8% P. Control pigs (placebo injection) received the .6% lysine diet. The types and diameters of muscle fibers from 30 barrows that had received daily injections of porcine somatotropin (pST) or a placebo and were fed dietary lysine at .6, .8, 1.0 or 1.2% were determined. Fiber data indicated that pST slightly increases the anaerobic metabolic potential of longissimus muscle. The higher levels of lysine caused enlargement of muscle cells. Earlier research has shown that this type of muscle biochemistry contributes to development of PSE muscle. Two trials were conducted to determine the suitability of soybean products for baby pigs. For trial 1, 40 weanling pigs were orally infused with .01 lb/pig/d of either dried skim milk (control), soybean meal (48% CP), soy protein concentrate, extruded soy protein concentrate, or soy protein isolate from d 7 to 12 of age, weaned at 21 d of age, and fed a diet containing the corresponding protein source until d 7 postweaning. Two hundred forty nursery pigs (12.8 lb initial wt) were used in a 28-d growth assay to determine the nutritional value of Williams 82 soybeans with (+K) and without (-K) gene expression for the Kunitz trypsin inhibitor. Treatments were soybean type (+K and -K) and heat treatment (none, half-roasting, and full-roasting time), in a factorial arrangement. The soybeans were heated in a Roast-a-Tron roaster, ground, and added to corn-dried whey diets formulated to be limiting in lysine (.88%). Odd-numbered pigs in new-born litters were vaccinated on d 1 with an oral Escherichia coli bacterin and their performance after weaning was compared with that of nonvaccinated littermates (even numbered pigs). In addition, each group of pigs was allotted to four water medication treatments that were administered from d 2 to d 6 after weaning. No significant interaction between vaccine and water treatment was observed. Vaccinated and non-vaccinated pigs performed similarly throughout the trial for the traits of ADG, ADFI, and F/G, indicating no beneficial effect from vaccination. A growth trial utilizing 120 pigs (avg initial wt 43.4 lb) was conducted to investigate the lysine requirement for pigs weighing 45 to 75 lb. Pigs were fed a corn-soybean meal diet containing .65, .75, .85, .95, or 1.05% lysine. Average daily gain (ADG) and feed/gain (F/G) were determined weekly, and plasma urea concentration was determined at the end of the first and last week of the experiment. The endometrium (lining of the uterus) functions to support and nurture developing embryos. However, 20 to 30% of pig embryos are lost in early pregnancy. Therefore, we developed methods to study the endometrium. Our initial work addresses the production of prostaglandins by the endometrium. Prostaglandins are known to play important roles in the establishment of pregnancy. In the pig, this process occurs near the end of the second week of pregnancy. Therefore, we determined the prostaglandin production by glandular and stromal cells of pig endometrium collected on d 13 of pregnancy. A computer program was developed for analyzing DHI records to evaluate potential losses from 1) reproduction, 2) nutrition, 3) milk quality, and 4) genetics. Production-tested Kansas Holstein herds were grouped according to Rolling Herd Average (RHA), with the groups averaging 13,587, 15,988, 17,938 and 20,227 lb milk/cow/yr. Losses were directly related to RHA, amounting to $573, $426, $300, and $160/cow/yr, respectively. The Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) program provides valuable information to dairy farmers for making feeding, breeding, and management decisions.
