Genetic Analysis Of Ton2 Dependent Processes In Microtubule Organization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Samantha Nicole Atkinson Oct 2014

Genetic Analysis Of Ton2 Dependent Processes In Microtubule Organization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Samantha Nicole Atkinson

Theses and Dissertations

Microtubules carry out many functions within the cell. They're used during mitosis and meiosis to move chromosomes to opposite sides of the cell so that cell division can occur. They're also used as structural support for the cell and are involved in establishing the cell shape. Microtubules are also able to reorient from a longitudinal orientation to a transverse orientation in response to gibberellic acid and auxin (two hormones that are involved in cell elongation). The mechanism for how this reorientation occurs is unknown. The TONNEAU2 (TON2) protein is necessary for proper microtubule organization. We looked at how TON2 affects …

Cell Wall And Autolytic Properties Of A Cold-Sensitive Listeria Monocytogenes Mutant Deficient In Branched-Chain Fatty Acid Biosynthesis, Anthony M. Martini Jul 2014

Cell Wall And Autolytic Properties Of A Cold-Sensitive Listeria Monocytogenes Mutant Deficient In Branched-Chain Fatty Acid Biosynthesis, Anthony M. Martini

Theses and Dissertations

Cellular membranes modulate several critical functions of bacterial physiology, including solute diffusion and nutrient transport. Biophysical properties of phospholipids, as well as environmental pressures such as temperature, can have a profound effect on these membrane functions and the kinetics of associated enzymes. Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular pathogen capable of robust low temperature growth, a characteristic thought to be facilitated by a membrane highly enriched in branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA). Mutants deficient in the biosynthesis of these fatty acids exhibit severe growth defects under low temperature and extreme pH conditions. Morphological investigations have also revealed these mutants to undergo …

Identification Of Transcriptionally Quiescent Regions In The Neurospora Crassa Genome, Katie Marie Groskreutz Mar 2014

Identification Of Transcriptionally Quiescent Regions In The Neurospora Crassa Genome, Katie Marie Groskreutz

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual reproduction and genetic exchange via meiosis are important and highly conserved processes in many living organisms. Occasionally, complications occur during meiosis that can result in chromosome abnormalities. In humans, improper chromosome development can cause life altering disorders such as Down Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome, and Patau Syndrome. Unfortunately, despite its importance, gaps remain in our knowledge of how this process works. For instance, little is known about how homolog identification occurs and what proteins identify matching chromosomes during pairing. This fundamental process occurs early during meiosis and ensures proper development of gametes.

Understanding the proteins involved during homolog pairing may …
