An Analysis Of Environmental Conditions Impacting Cyanobacterial Algal Blooms In Drinking Water Sources In Upstate South Carolina, Gregory Langlois Dec 2021

An Analysis Of Environmental Conditions Impacting Cyanobacterial Algal Blooms In Drinking Water Sources In Upstate South Carolina, Gregory Langlois

All Theses

Maintaining water quality in reservoirs used for drinking water has been an issue in recent years due to the presence of algal blooms. Algal blooms are a perennially recurring problem that can have negative impacts on tourism, recreation, and overall water quality. Additionally, algal blooms will often produce an assortment of chemicals, some of which are hazardous to the health of humans, and some of which that, while relatively innocuous, result in unpleasant tastes and odors in water. Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol are two taste and odor compounds that are notoriously difficult to treat out of drinking water sources by traditional …

Glycan Functionalization Of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (Ionps) As A Method Of Inactivating Antibiotic Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Via A Magnetically Mediated Energy Delivery (Magmed) System, Cedric Taylor Dec 2021

Glycan Functionalization Of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (Ionps) As A Method Of Inactivating Antibiotic Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Via A Magnetically Mediated Energy Delivery (Magmed) System, Cedric Taylor

All Theses

With the increase of antibiotic resistant bacteria, current established therapeutic treatment methods are rapidly demonstrating decreasing efficacy. For this project, we are studying a novel alternate mechanism of treating antibiotic resistant bacteria by utilizing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) coated with a heterobifunctional polyethylene glycol polymer (PEG) and functionalized with glycan structures that can interact with Neisseria gonorrhoeae FA1090. Interaction between the IONPs and bacteria is manipulated by an external alternating magnetic field (AMF) in a process known as magnetically mediated energy delivery (MagMED). Magnetic IONPs were synthesized and reacted with PEG (PEG-IONPs) and functionalized with glycans Gal(α1-3)Gal(β1-4)Glc(β1-1) (common name: …

Effects Of Cashew Nut Shell Extract On Nutrient Digestibility And Ruminal Fermentation Under In Vitro Batch Culture And Continuous Culture Conditions, Chandler Compton Dec 2021

Effects Of Cashew Nut Shell Extract On Nutrient Digestibility And Ruminal Fermentation Under In Vitro Batch Culture And Continuous Culture Conditions, Chandler Compton

All Theses

The overall objective of this research was to determine the effects of cashew nut shell extract (CNSE; 59% anacardic acid and 18% cardol) on nutrient digestibility and rumen fermentation profile under in vitro batch culture (Chapter 2) and continuous culture conditions (Chapter 3). The second objective was to determine an optimal supplementation dosage for dairy cows. The batch culture study was organized as a randomized complete block design with 15 replicates per treatment incubated for 24 h during four incubation runs. Each incubation was inoculated with rumen contents collected from ruminally fistulated cows fed either a close-up ( …

Sources Of Peanut Digging Losses And Strategies To Reduce Losses During Inversion, Loren Samenko Dec 2021

Sources Of Peanut Digging Losses And Strategies To Reduce Losses During Inversion, Loren Samenko

All Theses

Presented research was conducted at Clemson University’s Edisto Research and Education Center to quantify harvest related losses associated with the effects of peanut digger blade geometry, the effects of the peanut digger inversion assembly, and the effects of vine load on digging and strategies to address vine load. Three studies were performed to determine the potential losses incurred during the digging processes; various harvest metrics were analyzed to quantify the effects of the treatments. Five objectives guided the presented research. Objectives of the effects of peanut digger blade geometry study investigated the impact of blade geometry and blade aggression on …

Fine Mapping Of Chilling Requirement And Bloom Date To Enable Marker-Assisted Breeding Of Climate Resilient Peach, Gizem Demirel Dec 2021

Fine Mapping Of Chilling Requirement And Bloom Date To Enable Marker-Assisted Breeding Of Climate Resilient Peach, Gizem Demirel

All Theses

Peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) fruit is a delicious summer treat appreciated for its sweet, juicy, and aromatic taste all over the globe. With only 44 calories and zero fat per fruit, peach has a great popularity among consumers and producers for its nutritional and economic value. Peach production is threatened by unpredictable climate changes, rising temperatures that reduce winter chill, especially in the warmer growing areas, resulting in fruit and yield loss. Therefore, it is necessary to develop cultivars that are resilient to environmental changes. Peach breeding takes a long time, and this process can benefit from the …

Utility Of Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation For Weed And Disease Management In Solanaceous Vegetable Crops, Gursewak Singh Dec 2021

Utility Of Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation For Weed And Disease Management In Solanaceous Vegetable Crops, Gursewak Singh

All Theses

Managing weeds is one of the most challenging aspects of growing specialty crops. Weed control options are limited for specialty crops due to absence of effective herbicide options. The limited current herbicide options risk carryover and damage to subsequent crops. Bacterial wilt is another problem causing significant yield losses in southeast vegetable production. After the termination of methyl bromide due to health and environmental concerns, several other chemical fumigants gained interest, including 1,3-dichloropropene, chloropicrin and metam sodium/potassium. While less toxic to the environment than methyl bromide, these fumigants pose carcinogenic and mutagenic threats. Alternative weed control and diseases management tactics …

Investigation Of Dissimilatory Iron Reduction By Exophiala Hkrs030, Zachary Burton Aug 2021

Investigation Of Dissimilatory Iron Reduction By Exophiala Hkrs030, Zachary Burton

All Theses

Iron (Fe) is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust and is an essential component in many biological processes. While highly abundant, free iron is not readily available to biological systems since most iron is present in the earth’s crust in the form of ferrous (Fe2+) and ferric (Fe3+) iron minerals. Because of this limited availability, bacteria, plants and fungi have developed diverse ways to safely assimilate and store iron. Bacteria and some fungi have the ability to dissimilate iron. Dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) is where Fe3+ is reduced to Fe2+ without the cell assimilating the Fe2+ and …
