Ecological Relationships Of The Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Of The Cascade Springs Area, Eugene Clark Devenport Aug 1966

Ecological Relationships Of The Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Of The Cascade Springs Area, Eugene Clark Devenport

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Forest service, recognizing the scenic, scientific, and educational value of the Cascade Springs area near Mount Timpanogos, has set aside and begun development of this spot for the use of the general public. As part of their preparatory work they have asked that examination be made of the flora, fauna 9 and physical features which may in part be incorporated into public informational facilities being constructed at the springs.

An Ecological Life History Of Budsage In Western Utah, Benjamin W. Wood Aug 1966

An Ecological Life History Of Budsage In Western Utah, Benjamin W. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

The ecological life history of budsage (Artemisia spinescens D.C. Eaton) was investigated during 1963 and 1964. The field studies were conducted at the Desert Experimental Range in Millard County, Utah. Laboratory studies were done at Brigham Young University. The different community types in which budsage grows were described and the physical site factors, viz. climate, soil texture, total soluble salts, hydrogen ion concentration of the soil, carbonate content and soil moisture were investigated. Phenology of seedlings, root systems, shoot and flower development, and plant longevity were investigated. Studies were also made on the effects of different seasons and intensities of …

Salix In Utah, Alv Dan Youngberg Aug 1966

Salix In Utah, Alv Dan Youngberg

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of the native and naturalized species of Salix in Utah, and is based upon the following methods. A review of all available literature was accomplished in order to compile a list of species. Type specimens were obtained from the University of California at Berkeley, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University, University of Utah, and Utah State University. About five-hundred specimens were collected in twenty counties during the fall fo 1965 and the spring of 1966. Small Mammal Invasion Of A Trapped-Out Habitat, Lester Dennis Flake Aug 1966

Small Mammal Invasion Of A Trapped-Out Habitat, Lester Dennis Flake

Theses and Dissertations

Small mammals, with their numerous adaptations, have successfully inhabited most biotic communities. Interactions arising from competition among small mammals in these communities may lead to a rather complex social organization with poorly defined boundaries which limit the movement of individuals. Important among these are territorial boundaries sometimes established by small mammals to protect all or part of their home range.

The Weberian Osteology Of Three Utah Suckers (Catostomidae), William James Stubbs May 1966

The Weberian Osteology Of Three Utah Suckers (Catostomidae), William James Stubbs

Theses and Dissertations

The Weberian mechanisms of three Utah Lake suckers (Catostomidae: Catostominae; Catostomini), Catostomus fecundus Cope and Yarrow, Chasmistes liorus Jordan, and Catostomus ardens Jordan and Gilbert, were examined, described, and compared, and a statistical analysis was made of some of their more important differences. The mechanisms were found to be basically similar to one another and to those of other Catostomini as previously described and/or illustrated. They are individually distinct, but each varies within its own limits, the intraspecific variation being greatest in the wider-ranging Catostomus ardens and least in the seemingly most restricted Catostomus fecundus. From the evidence at hand …

Dermacentor Andersoni And Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever In National Forest Recreational Sites Of Utah, C. Selby Herrin Apr 1966

Dermacentor Andersoni And Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever In National Forest Recreational Sites Of Utah, C. Selby Herrin

Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the prevalence of adult ticks of Dermacentor andersoni in national forest recreational sites of Utah, and (2) the incidence of spotted fever rickettsia, Rickettsia rickettsii, in the ticks of these areas. With the use of a white flannel cloth, 358 adult D. andersoni (135 males and 223 females) were collected from 48 recreational sites during the spring and summer of 1964. Ticks from each collection were put in pools, preserved in non-fat skim milk at -30° C, and subsequently tested for the presence of spotted fever rickettsia by guinea pig inoculations. …

Meadow, Millard County, Utah: The Geography Of A Small Mormon Agricultural Community, Richard H. Jackson Jan 1966

Meadow, Millard County, Utah: The Geography Of A Small Mormon Agricultural Community, Richard H. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The agricultural village was the basis of the original economy of Utah established by the Mormon settlers, but it has since been supplanted in importance by the industrial and commercial activities of the large centers of the Wasatch Front counties of Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah. This study was conducted in an attempt to determine the future of those communities removed from industrialized northern Utah. The village of Meadow, Millard County, was chosen as an example and it was subjected to a detailed geographic analysis. From this analysis conclusions have been drawn regarding its future.
