It includes common difficulties that not only occurred before weight loss, but after it as well, making it different from the typical success stories that are told. The purpose of this study was to examine the kinematic movements of the lower limbs involved in walking with a new hands-free crutch known as iWalk, manufactured by iWalkFree Inc. Recently, this new crutch has been developed to reduce underarm stress from conventional crutches, and improve walking efficiency. This study examined the movements with the iWalk by simulating a lower limb injury to the right lower limb in ten healthy female individuals in order to evaluate the kinematics of walking gait, specifically the hip joint angle of the nonweight bearing limb. The maintenance of the integrity of DNA is crucial for life as any change could result in cellular abnormalities leading to disease. DNA is most stable as a double helix. However, many processes manipulating DNA require the presence of vulnerable single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). ssDNA-binding proteins (SSBs) have the ability to bind to ssDNA, stabilize it and thus allow DNA transactions to take place. Prokaryotic SSBs, found in bacteria and viruses that infect them, are comprised of a DNA-binding body and a negatively-charged flexible C-terminal tail. Little data have been collected that compare the linear velocity of the ball at release versus the accuracy of the pitch in fast-pitch windmill softball pitching. Previous research suggests that accuracy of a task may decrease as the speed of the task increases. Little research exists that previously compares the speed and accuracy of fastball and change-up pitches in windmill softball pitching. Meloidogyne incognita is an obligate parasitic roundworm that infects the root tips of a wide variety of host plants. This infection directly affects the crop production globally with the loss of crops such as tomatoes, carrots, and potatoes. Genes such as At2g42005, a putative amino acid transporter, have been found to be upregulated by nematode infection. The unique phylogenetic and ontogenetic history of domestic dogs has had an effect on the way they communicate with one another. Research suggests that domestic dogs’ ability to communicate through visual signals may vary by breed (Goodwin, Bradshaw, & Wickens 1997; Kerswell, Bennet, Butler, & Hemsworth 2009). In the current study, we investigate the effect of a visual communication signal, the look away, observed in both domestic dogs and their ancestor, the wolf, in order to examine whether or not domesticated dogs respond to this visual signal. Trinucleotide repeat disorders are an umbrella group of genetic diseases that have been well described clinically for a long time; however, the scientific community is only beginning to understand their molecular basis. They are classified in two basic groups depending on the location of the relevant triplet repeats in a coding or a non-coding region of the genome. Repeat expansion past a disease-specific threshold results in molecular and cellular abnormalities that manifest themselves as disease symptoms. The concept of equilibrium - the idea that a perturbed system will tend to return to its original state - is the basis for many foundational theories in ecology. Yet, the spatial and temporal dynamics of ecosystems are strongly influenced by disturbance. If a particular disturbance greatly alters local climatic conditions, gastropods should be among the first organisms to show a measurable response. The effects of human alteration of habitats (for example, conversion of forest to agriculture) have much longer-lasting effects than those of natural disturbances.

Organic waste compounds (OWC’s) are an environmental concern that can have adverse effects on humans, animals, and the environment. Ethinyl estradiol (EE2) is one common OWC and is an active ingredient in oral birth control pills. The presence of EE2 in aquatic environments and drinking water can be linked to decreased fertility and altered physiology in fish. I am developing Q-PCR biomarkers to detect changes in fish at low concentrations before adverse effects occur at higher concentrations. The non-native Asian shore is becoming a dominant species in southeastern Massachusetts beaches. A study was conducted to test whether environmental conditions across beaches in southeastern Massachusetts had an effect on the crab species inhabiting those areas. Although this was the main focus, it was found that the invasive Asian shore crab has had an ecological impact on the native crab populations. Six southeastern Massachusetts beaches (Scituate Beach, Plymouth Beach, Mass Trust Estuary, Ellisville Harbor, Gooseberry Island, and Sandwich Marsh) were visited and crab species were counted in measured sites, generally two sites pe r beach. Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent added to a wide variety of medical and consumer care products such as soaps, deodorants, toothpastes, and cleaning supplies. Bacterial exposure to triclosan could lead to chlorine resistant bacteria. These bacteria may survive chlorination, the standard method used to disinfect our drinking water. Water samples were obtained downstream a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Bridgewater, MA and reference virgin stream (VS) in Monroe, MA. Bacteria were isolated from water samples, exposed to triclosan (0.001 or 0.05mg/mL), and then exposed to chlorine (0.05g/mL). 49% of all bacterial strains increased chlorine resistance after at least one triclosan …

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), or subtle random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry, has recently become a useful tool in allowing researchers to understand more about an organism's health, fitness, developmental stability and environmental stressors. Ultimately, FA studies can be used as an indirect measurement of the quality of an aquatic system over time. We measured and examined the femur segments of the larval damselfly, Calopteryx maculata from sites on the Town, Hockomock, and Salisbury Plain Rivers, of Plymouth County, Massachusetts to determine FA levels. In this study larval skins of dragonflies were collected counted and studied in order to find peaks and patterns of emergence and correlate with environmental factors. One of the most important stages of the life of a dragonfly is the time when it changes from a larval aquatic insect into a flying adult. This stage takes place when the dragonfly emerges out of its skin called the exuvia. Exuvia were collected from two sites at Carver Pond, Bridgewater, Massachusetts to determine differences in species emergence patterns from May 26, 2003 to July 18, 2003 and correlated with environmental conditions.
