Effect Of Snowtrapping And Fertilization On Production Of Crested Wheatgrass And Native Pastures In Southwest Saskatchewan, M P. Schellenberg, J Waddington

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The benefits of increasing soil water with snow management and fertilizer for annual and perennial crops have been demonstrated for semiarid environments. We examined the combined effect of snow management and fertilizer on forage production. In 1985, vertical wood slat or slotted plastic snow fencing (0.7m high) were erected on crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum) pasture. In 1986, five rates of fertilizer: 400, 200, 100, 50, 0 kg ha-1 nitrogen each with 50 kg ha-1 phosphorous and a sixth treatment with no fertilizer were applied to each side and type of the snowfence. A second site was selected on …

Seed Banks Of Sagebrush Communities Seeded With Crested Wheatgrass, Kevin L. Gunnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum [L.] Gaertn.) is one of the most commonly seeded exotic species in the western United States. Although many degraded Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis) plant communities have been seeded with crested wheatgrass during rehabilitation efforts, seed banks of these communities have not been characterized. I sought to characterize and explain the variation among 33 seeded communities in the northeastern Great Basin. Hierarchical clustering and principal components analysis identified four possible seed bank categories in these communities. Seed bank categories varied from high to low crested wheatgrass dominance. The crested wheatgrass-dominated category …

Vegetation Characteristics Of Wyoming Big Sagebrush Communities Historically Seeded With Crested Wheatgrass In Northeastern Great Basin, Usa, Justin Rodney Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum [L.] Gaertn.) is one of the most commonly seeded grass species in the western United States and dominates thousands of hectares in the Great Basin. Although many degraded Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis) plant communities have been seeded with crested wheatgrass, successional pathways, influence of soil attributes, and cultivation history on the vegetation of these communities have not been fully characterized. I sought to identify community phases, vegetative differences, and soil attributes that explain variation among 35 Wyoming big sagebrush communities historically seeded with crested wheatgrass. All communities were more than …

Ec01-120 Certified Perennial Grass Varieties Recommended For Nebraska, Bruce Anderson, Roger Kanable, Ken Vogel

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

More than 100 species of perennial grasses are adapted to and grown in Nebraska. They are classified as either "cool-season" or "warm-season" grasses. The following map, "Major Land Resource Areas For Selecting Adapted Grass Species and Varieties," depicts 16 regions within the state of Nebraska. The table, "Varieties of Grasses for Use in Major Land Resource Areas of Nebraska," shows which grass varieties are best adapted to different sites in each region. After identifying the region on the map, use the table to select an appropriate grass variety for your site.

Nf98-372 Preparation And Use Of Wheatgrass Stands After Crp And Associated Costs/Income — Part I, Patrick E. Reece, Tom Holman, David W. Cook

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Wheatgrass species (Agropyron spp.) were seeded on many Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres in western Nebraska and adjoining states. These species included crested (A. cristatum, desertorum), intermediate (A. intermedium), pubescent (A. trichophorum) and western (A. smithii) wheatgrasses. Good to excellent stands of wheatgrass can be valuable forages sources for livestock during the spring, summer, or fall, however, accumulation of large amounts of poor quality residual herbage during 10-year CRP contract periods can reduce animal performance.

This NebGuide discusses field evaluations, results, recommended preparations, spring and summer grazing after CRP; and associated …

Dungpat Microenvironmental Effects On Germination And Establishment Of Crested Wheatgrass, Ghulam Akbar May 1994

Dungpat Microenvironmental Effects On Germination And Establishment Of Crested Wheatgrass, Ghulam Akbar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Complementary greenhouse and field studies investigated the effects of ambient environmental conditions on cattle dungpat moisture, temperature, nutrient concentration, and crust formation dynamics, which in turn influence seed germination and seedling establishment in dungpats. 'Hycrest' crested wheatgrass [Agropyron desertorum (Fisch. ex Link) X A. cristatum (L.) Gaert.] was used as a representative revegetation species.

After collecting feces from Holstein steers that had been fed crested wheatgrass seeds, uniform dungpats were prepared and placed on two soil types (loam and coarse sand) in containers under three watering treatments (field capacity, 1/2 field capacity, and no water) in the greenhouse. Dungpat …

Comparison Of Yearling Steer Gains In Early Summer Under Season-Long Native, Season-Long Crested Wheatgrass And June-Deferred Native Grazing Systems, P.S. Johnson, J. J. Wagner, M. J. Goetz, J. Cantrell Jan 1989

Comparison Of Yearling Steer Gains In Early Summer Under Season-Long Native, Season-Long Crested Wheatgrass And June-Deferred Native Grazing Systems, P.S. Johnson, J. J. Wagner, M. J. Goetz, J. Cantrell

South Dakota Beef Report, 1989

Season-long native, season-long crested wheatgrass and June-deferred native grazing systems were compared with regard to average daily gains, gains per acre and total gains. Due to drought conditions, the typical 4-month spring-summer season was reduced to a season of approximately 2 months beginning in June. Few differences were detected between the systems for ADG in each month or over the season. Gains per acre were greatest (P<.05) on crested wheatgrass pastures (33.75 Ib/acre), but no differences were detected between native pastures (1 0.61 -1 6.61 Ib/acre) regardless of whether they had been grazed for 2 months or one (using similar stocking rates). This study indicates that, using weight gain data from 1989 and a 2-month grazing season, the greatest potential gain for the season is realized with a system where cattle graze crested wheatgrass in June and native pastures in July. If this system was applied on 320 acres crested wheatgrass and 640 acres excellent condition native pasture, it would have the potential to produce approximately 23,196 Ib of gain on yearling steers compared with season-long (June-July) production of 9,408 Ib on @I0 acres and 14,112 Ib on 960 acres native pasture.

Effect Of Late Season Protein And Energy Supplementation On Performance Of Yearling Steers Grazing Mixed Native Range Or Cool Season, Crested Wheatgrass Pastures, J.J. Wagner, P.S. Johnson, J. Cantrell Jan 1989

Effect Of Late Season Protein And Energy Supplementation On Performance Of Yearling Steers Grazing Mixed Native Range Or Cool Season, Crested Wheatgrass Pastures, J.J. Wagner, P.S. Johnson, J. Cantrell

South Dakota Beef Report, 1989

Seventy-two yearling, black baldy steers were utilized in a grazing experiment to study the effect of late summer, early fall protein (2.33 Ib., 40% all natural, fed each Monday, Wednesday and Friday) or energy (4.4 Ib. corn fed daily) supplementation on average daily gain. Two pasture types, mixed native range and crested wheatgrass, were also examined. Cattle were purchased in May as part of a larger group and gained an average of 2.16 Ib. per head daily prior to initiation of the study on September 9, 1988. Average daily gain was significantly greater (P = .012) for cattle grazing crested …

Evaluation Of Crested Wheatgrass Introductions For Forage Yield And Quality, K. P. Vogel, P. E. Reece, J. F. S. Lamb Feb 1984

Evaluation Of Crested Wheatgrass Introductions For Forage Yield And Quality, K. P. Vogel, P. E. Reece, J. F. S. Lamb

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Crested wheatgrass, Agropyron cristatum and A. desertorum, are among the most important cool-season forage grasses in the United States and Canada, particularly for reseeding arid range sites. Further improvement in this grass by breeding depends on identifying sources of genetic variability for forage yield and quality. Foreign introductions are an obvious source of genetic variation since crested wheatgrasses are introduced species. In this study 38 accessions (PI lines) and 8 Nebraska experimental lines were evaluated for forage quality as measured by in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and protein content and for forage yield. The cultivars 'Ruff' and 'Nordan' …

The Energy Expenditure Of Heifers Grazing Crested Wheatgrass Rangeland In West-Central Utah, Kris M. Havstad May 1981

The Energy Expenditure Of Heifers Grazing Crested Wheatgrass Rangeland In West-Central Utah, Kris M. Havstad

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The free-roaming ruminant requires energy for the demands of vii grazing, traveling and thermoregulation that are not required by its confined counterpart. Literature estimates of these additional costs range from 10 to 170 percent above maintenance. The uncertain magnitude of this increased demand and the factors that contribute to it impede the ability of the rangeland ruminant nutritionist to establish guidelines for the energy requirements of the free-roaming herbivore. This study was designed to estimate the energy expenditure of yearling Angus heifers while grazing a declining supply of available crested wheatgrass forage (Agropyron cristatum) on rangeland in west-central …

The Influence Of Climate On Biomass And Mineralomass Of A Crested Wheatgrass Community In Northern Utah, Randall S. Shinn May 1975

The Influence Of Climate On Biomass And Mineralomass Of A Crested Wheatgrass Community In Northern Utah, Randall S. Shinn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Aboveground biomass, litter biomass and root biomass of a crested wheatrgrass (Agropyron desertorum [Fisch.] Schult.) dominated community were inventoried in the fall of 1971, 1972, and 1973. In addition, energy, nitrogen, fats and ash determinations were made on the materials collected in 1972 and 1973.

The sampling methods used generated data sufficiently precise to detect significant differences (α = .10) among biomass components among years. The chemical contents of the components were similar in the fall of 1972 and the fall of 1973 despite the large differences in growing season precipitation.

A simple linear regression formula was generated from …

A Study Of The Phylogenetic Relationships Of Agropyron Scribneri, Agropyron Trachycaulum, And Sitanion Hystrix, C. Lorenzo Pope Aug 1972

A Study Of The Phylogenetic Relationships Of Agropyron Scribneri, Agropyron Trachycaulum, And Sitanion Hystrix, C. Lorenzo Pope

Theses and Dissertations

Agropyron scribneri Vasey (spreading wheatgrass) is endemic to the Rocky Mountains of the Intermountain West. Each distinct population is widely separeated by valley and desert floors. It is morphologically similar to the hybrid between Agropyron trachycaulum (Link) Malte and Sitanion hystrix between Agropyron trachycaulum (Link) Malte and Sitanion hystrix (Nutt.) J. G. Smith as well as the hybrid, A. trachycaulum x A. scribneri. It appears that A. scribneri may have originated de novo from hybidization products of A. trachycaulum and S. hystrix. Agropyron scribneri appears to be morphologically similar to the population of S. hysterix with which it is associated. …

Nutritive Values Of Russian Wildrye, Crested Wheatgrass, And Intermediate Wheatgrass Grazed By Cattle On Utah Foothill Ranges, George W. Mitchell May 1969

Nutritive Values Of Russian Wildrye, Crested Wheatgrass, And Intermediate Wheatgrass Grazed By Cattle On Utah Foothill Ranges, George W. Mitchell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A comparative index to digestible nutrients was established for Russian wildrye, crested wheatgrass, and intermediate wheatgrass seeded on foothill areas of Utah. The nutritive values of these grasses were compared by the lignin ratio method, the chlorophyllan ratio method, and the in vivo rumen bag process.

Average digestion coefficients computed by the lignin ratio method for dry matter, ether extract, cellulose, and gross energy were highest for intermediate wheatgrass. Protein was more digestible for Russian wildrye. Digestible energy was adequate in all species to meet requirements for late lactation.

Results from the chlorophyllan ratio method were excessively high and were …

Nebraska Pastures: Seeding And Management, A. L. Frolik, E. F. Frolik Feb 1941

Nebraska Pastures: Seeding And Management, A. L. Frolik, E. F. Frolik

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Pastures are an important source of feed in the livestock industry. Approximately 70 per cent of the income from Nebraska farms is from the sale of livestock and livestock products, and for this reason consideration should be given to the maintenance of good pastures. Poor pastures, like other poor crops, are expensive. Good grass cover is also an effective means of conserving the soil resources.
