Rising water temperatures along the northeastern U.S. continental shelf have resulted in an offshore range shift of the Atlantic surfclam Spisula solidissima to waters still occupied by ocean quahogs Arctica islandica. Fishers presently are prohibited from landing both Atlantic surfclams and ocean quahogs in the same catch, thus limiting fishing to locations where the target species can be sorted on deck. Wind energy development on and around the fishing grounds will further restrict the fishery. A spatially explicit model of the Atlantic surfclam fishery (Spatially Explicit Fishery Economics Simulator) has the ability to simulate the consequences of fishery displacement …
Determinants Of Female Bargaining Power In Northern Mozambican Households, Sara Marilyn Gardner
Determinants Of Female Bargaining Power In Northern Mozambican Households, Sara Marilyn Gardner
Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses
Melinda Gates stated, “If you search for poverty, you will find women who don’t have power. If you explore prosperity, you will find women who do have power and use it.” Throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, women are expected to perform disproportional amounts of labor but are often ignored in household decision-making regarding social and economic matters. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) states that women in Mozambique are highly disadvantaged, relative to men, due to low levels of education, maternal health risks, restricted economic prospects, and cultural norms. This study aims to better understand the causes of female empowerment in Northern …

Primary Reasons For Not Attending Farmers' Market. Do Market Features And Consumer Characteristics Matter?, Autumn Milliner
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The number of farmers’ markets has been growing, but consumer attendance does not appear to rise at the same rate. Specific objectives were: (1) describe the consumer characteristics of individuals who do not attend farmers’ markets (2) investigate the consumer characteristics and market amenities that influence a consumer’s choice to not attend a farmers market (3) estimate the variables that impact a consumer’s level of interest in subscribing to a CSA and (4) assess and estimate the relationship between consumer characteristics and their willingness to pay …

Economic Contribution Of The Agricultural Sector To The Arkansas Economy In 2018, Leah English, Jennie Popp, Wayne Miller
Research Reports and Research Bulletins
Agriculture and associated agricultural activities are major contributors to the Arkansas economy. Agriculture is defined as the sum of agricultural production and processing activities, unless otherwise specified, and includes crop and animal production and processing, agricultural support industries, forestry and forest products, and textile goods. Agriculture contributes to the economy through direct agricultural production and value-added processing, leading to economic activity in other parts of the economy. This report is the thirteenth in a series that examines agriculture’s economic contribution to the Arkansas economy. The total economic contribution of agriculture (direct, indirect, and induced effects) on value added, employment, and …

Irrigation Management, Environment, And Profits: Who Wins?, Emily O'Donnell
Irrigation Management, Environment, And Profits: Who Wins?, Emily O'Donnell
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The impact of irrigation technology on farmers’ management strategies and resulting environmental benefits depends upon agronomic properties and market forces. We evaluate the role of deficit irrigation using soil moisture probe technology on corn yield and evapotranspiration, which is a measure of water use efficiency. Evapotranspiration represents the water that transits through the plant during planting to harvest (transpiration) and the evaporation from the soil into the environment, or the displaced water in the production process. We develop yield and evapotranspiration response functions to inform a constrained profit maximization model used to identify the optimal irrigation level across a variety …

Rp96-11 The Farm Corporation: What It Is, How It Works, How It Is Taxed, Neil E. Harl
Neil E. Harl
A corporation is an artificial person that is created and operated according to state corporation statutes. It is a separate taxpayer subject to specific and detailed federal, state, and local tax laws. The advice and service of your lawyer are indispensable in organizing and operating a farm corporation. There are three basic forms of farm business organization, the sole proprietorship, the partnership, and the corporation. Variations of these forms have resulted in the limited partnership and the "tax option" corporation. These three basic forms are discussed in this research publication.

Kentucky Equine Survey
The last thorough equine inventory in Kentucky was undertaken in 1977, leaving the state’s equine industry with 35 years of changes, growth and contraction that were neither measured nor analyzed.
In response to these needs, in 2011, the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Horse Council, with support by industry organizations spearheaded by the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers’ Club and Kentucky Thoroughbred Association/Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, and initial support from the University of Louisville, succeeded in securing funding for a large-scale, comprehensive equine survey upon which future industry plans could be built. This was …

Economics Research Reports
U.S. agriculture is going through a transition and agricultural policies are being modified to make production of farm commodities more responsive to market forces. In this competitive environment, efforts on the part of commodity groups for market development are becoming increasingly important. However, in order to devise any market development plan for a commodity, the understanding of the present status of the marketing system is important. At a minimum, one needs to know the methods of buying and selling, types of buyers, shipment destinations, and transportation modes for the commodity. Corn, soybeans, wheat, and sunflower seeds are the most important …
