Fecal Bacterial Communities As An Indicator Of Trophic Interactions Among Anuran Larvae, Steven Jacob Everman Dec 2016

Fecal Bacterial Communities As An Indicator Of Trophic Interactions Among Anuran Larvae, Steven Jacob Everman

Master's Theses

Anurans are mass spawners, often with multiple females spawning together, resulting in thousands of tadpoles sharing a habitat. Such large numbers of tadpoles with limited dispersal can lead to intense competition for resources. Inter and intra-specific competition for food could have negative impacts on the growth and survival of smaller tadpoles. Fecal bacterial communities have the potential to be used as indicators of changes in diet making it possible to determine if tadpoles in the wild are eating the same food or not. After feeding on two prepared diets that differed in the percentage of complex carbohydrates, the fecal bacterial …

Characterization Of The Marine Sponge Amphimedon Compressa Microbiome Across A Spatial Gradient, Renee Michelle Potens May 2016

Characterization Of The Marine Sponge Amphimedon Compressa Microbiome Across A Spatial Gradient, Renee Michelle Potens

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Diverse and ecologically important microbial communities (microbiomes) are symbiotic within marine sponges. In this study, the microbiome of Amphimedon compressa from three sample locations (Broward and Dade Counties, Southeast Florida, USA and the Southern Caribbean, Bocas del Toro, Panama) is characterized using 16S rRNA Illumina sequencing. The predominant taxa are Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria, as expected for Low Microbial Abundance sponges, accounting for over 53% of the total microbiome community. The numbers of Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) decrease from Broward County (2,900) to Dade County (2,300) and then Bocas del Toro (1,200). The correlates to a decreasing north-south gradient of …

Cyanomargarita Gen. Nov. (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria): Convergent Evolution Resulting In A Cryptic Genus, Sergey Shalygin Jan 2016

Cyanomargarita Gen. Nov. (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria): Convergent Evolution Resulting In A Cryptic Genus, Sergey Shalygin

Masters Theses

Two populations of Rivularia-like cyanobacteria were isolated from ecologically diverse and biogeographically distant sites. One population was from an unpolluted stream in the Kola Peninsula of Russia, whereas the other was from a wet wall in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, a desert park-land in Utah. Though both were virtually indistinguishable from Rivularia in field and cultured material, they were both phylogenetically distant from Rivularia and the Rivulariaceae based on both 16S rRNA and rbcLX phylogenies. The new putative cryptic genus Cyanomargarita, with proposed type species C. melechinii sp. nov., and additional putative species C. calcarea are described herein. A …

Comparative Evaluation Of Sequence Analysis Of 16s Rrna And Rpobgenes For Identification Of Aquatic Mycobacteria, Fazel Pourahmad, Randolph Harvey Richards Jan 2016

Comparative Evaluation Of Sequence Analysis Of 16s Rrna And Rpobgenes For Identification Of Aquatic Mycobacteria, Fazel Pourahmad, Randolph Harvey Richards

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The nucleotide sequences of partial 16S rRNA and bacterial RNA polymerase ß-subunit (rpoB) genes for 57 mycobacterial strains were determined. Compared to the 16S rRNA gene sequences, variable regions were scattered along the whole fragment sequence, indicating that the rpoB gene is more polymorphic. Unlike 16S rRNA sequences, species variation was observed within M. fortuitum strains. The topology of the rpoB-based phylogenetic tree was almost the same as that of the 16S rRNA sequence analysis. These results suggest that the rpoB gene is a highly conserved gene, and taxonomical studies based on this gene may be comparable with similar studies …
