Use Of Nonsettable Eggs To Evaluate Turkey Hen Fertility, M. R. Bakst, S. Mcgary, I. Estevez, T. Knapp
Use Of Nonsettable Eggs To Evaluate Turkey Hen Fertility, M. R. Bakst, S. Mcgary, I. Estevez, T. Knapp
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The use of nonsettable eggs (checked, cracked) to perform fresh egg breakouts to estimate true fertility and to assess the rate of sperm penetration of the perivitelline layer overlying the germinal disc was evaluated. Germinal discs and the perivitelline layer overlying the germinal disc were accessible for assessments. The stage of blastodermal development positively correlated (r = 0.65, P < 0.0001) with eggshell thickness. It was also determined that the perivitelline layer of nonsettable eggs could be isolated and stained to determine the presence or absence of sperm holes. True fertility of nonsettable eggs (checked and cracked only) and settable eggs was 90 and 95%, respectively. It was concluded that checked and cracked eggs could be used to estimate the true fertility of a flock.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study conducted in İstanbul, the contamination of sandpits in children's playgrounds with Toxocara eggs was investigated. For this purpose, a total of 132 sand samples were taken from the sandpits of 63 playgrounds between November 1998 and September 1999. Toxocara eggs were found in 10 (15.9%) of 63 playgrounds. A total of 22 eggs were recovered. The average egg number per 100 g of sand was found to be 0.067 for the overall examined playgrounds and 0.44 (ranging from 0.2 to 1.2) for the contaminated ones.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Plant parasitic nematodes (Tylenchida: Nematoda) found on sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) growing in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were examined faunistically and taxonomically. This study was carried out in two provinces (Antalya and İçel) important for the cultivation of sesame during the summer of 1998. Samples were taken from 20 different sesame fields and examined in the laboratory. By the end of our research 23 species were identified. Two of these (Helicotylenchus abunaamai Siddiqi and Paratylenchus rotundicephalus Bajaj) are species which have never been recorded in Turkey. Their identification, distribution in the Mediterranean region, and morphological and morphometric characteristics are …

Due to the recent increasing mortality rates in 1- to 4-month-old Thoroughbred foals with Rhodococcus equi infection in Turkey, serum samples from 454 foals between 30 and 60 days on studfarms of the Marmara Region, where the Thoroughbred foal population is concentrated, were investigated by ELISA for early diagnosis of the infection. The Tween 20-extracted antigen of the R. equi ATCC 6939 strain was used in the ELISA. Two hundred and nine (46%) of the 454 foals were found to be ELISA-positive. Optical density (OD) values of 0.3 (positive limit) or higher were detected in 43% of foals aged 30-40 …

A total of 404 horses was examined from the selected cities (Istanbul, Bursa, Balıkesir) of the Marmara region of Turkey. Blood was collected from all horses and the sera were analyzed for the presence of antibodies to equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) using an agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test. The results revealed that none of the horses were positive for antibodies to EIAV.

Larvae of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus were identified in the feces of a 2-year-old female cat suffering from dyspnea and incoordination for 18 months. The larvae had a terminal S-shaped projection and a subterminal dorsal spine. The larvae measured 363-378x15 µm (aver. 370x15 µm). Firstly, moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) was given subcutaneously to 3 healthy stray cats over 1 year old to check adverse effects on cats. No adverse reaction was observed. Then a subcutaneous injection of moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) was given to the infected cat for treatment on day 0 and this was repeated on day 51. Seventy-nine days after the 2nd …

The Effects Of High Salinity On The Production Of Capoeta Tinca In A Naturally Contaminated River, Fi̇tnat Güler Ekmekçi̇
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The production properties of Capoeta tinca, the dominant fish population in a naturally contaminated stream in the Kızılırmak Basin, were studied together with the physical and chemical characteristics of the waters and evaluated in order to assess the impact of the high natural salinity on the fish population. The evaluation was based on comparisons of fish specimens caught from Acı stream, which is highly contaminated by a lithology of high salt content, and those from Terme stream, the uncontaminated freshwater branch, between May 1995 and May 1996. The salinity and electrical conductivity of Acı stream varied between 2 and 8.5, …
