The pastoral industry in the Kimberley region began in the early 1880s withthe introduction of cattle overlanded from Queensland and New South Wales into the East Kimberley and with the almost simultaneous introduction, by sea, ofboth sheep and cattle into the Fitzroy Valley.Occupation of the more accessible areas was gradually achieved by theprogressive extension of these two arms of settlement which ultimately metaround the present location of Fitzroy Crossing. Extensive development of themore rugged areas of the North Kimberley came later with the construction ofreasonable access roads to the few isolated stations which had been initiallyestablished in this area.

Biologists studying food habits of predators can often determine the prey species but not the sex of the prey from remains found at dens, in stomachs, scats, or pellets of predators. Knowledge of the sex of prey is useful in evaluating predator food habits as well as indicating sex specific differences in prey behavior.

Plains pocket gophers, Geomys bursarius, can be easily identified by the presence of two prominent grooves on the face of each upper incisor. This makes them ideal specimens for studying prey remains. In this paper, we present data that can be used to identify the …

Demography, Movements, Activity, Habitat Utilization And Marking Behavior Of A Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) Population In South-Central Florida, Douglas A. Wassmer

Eighteen (6 male and 7 female adults, 5 juveniles) radio-collared bobcats (Lynx rufus) were monitored on the Archbold Biofogical Station and vicinity during 1979-1982. Mean density was 0.06 males, 0.11 females, and 0.19 juveniles per 100 ha. Mean sex and age ratios were 0.6 adult males per adult female and 1.22 juveniles per adult. Breeding occurred from September to March. Mean size of 13 mobile litters was 2.5 (range 1-4). Nine (50%) of 18 collared cats died. Nine additional individuals were found dead or reported killed. Known causes of 16 deaths were: road-killed 8, feline panleukopenia or notoedric …

The purpose of this thesis was to determine whether high solids concentrations may be applied to air knife coatings for boxboard. Considerations were the effects of high solids on coat weight controllability and final sheet properties.

The study was conducted on a pilot air knife coater using coatings at 56-62% solids and containing .2 to .6 parts per hundred CMC as water retention aid. Finished sheet properties evaluated included brightness, gloss, smoothness, IGT pick strength, K & N ink absorption and glueability.

Effects Of Wastewater Discharges On Periphyton Growth In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Marsha Korb Morris

A study of the effects of secondary-treated wastewater on periphyton growth in Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona was conducted from September 1979 to December 1980. Periphyton ash-free dry weight, chlorophyll-a, dominant species composition, and alkaline phosphatase activity were measured on fiberglass substrates. Substrates were incubated for two to four weeks in littoral and limnetic habitats. Physical and chemical variables and phytoplankton chlorophyll-a were measured concurrently.

Transparency increased with increasing distance from the discharge. Secchi depth ranged from 0.75 m at the discharge confluence (station 2) in August, to greater than 20 m at the most distant stations (stations 9 and 10) in …

The objective of this thesis is to study a laboratory horizontal screw press washer as an effective, yet economical, means of deinking offset newsprint wastes at high consistencies. The theoretical advantages of utilizing a high consistency deinking process include minimal water consumption, reduced and more concentrated filtrate volumes, low effluent solids and fiber loss, and minimal space requirements. The disadvantages include a relatively high unit power consumption, high capital cost, sometimes an inefficient amount of fillers and fines removed, and ink particles may get trapped at consistencies greater than 18%. Results proved many of these theoretical advantages and disadvantages. Also, …

A study was conducted to determine the behavior of pulp flows through a motionless mixer. Specifically, the effects of stock consistency, pulp type, and number of mixing elements on the pressure drop across a motionless mixer were examined. An attempt was made to develop correlations between pressure drop across the motionless mixer due to pulp flows and the consistency of the pulp slurries. From the data generated by this study, it was determined that using the value of pressure drop across the motionless mixer to determine pulp consistency is not very feasible. Fossil fuel deficiencies and escalating costs are presented. The application of solar industrial process heat (SIPH) to the paper industry is examined with focus on cylinder dryer sections located at the dry end of a paper machine in a non-integrated mill. Drying theory, as it relates to SIPH, is discussed in detail. Very high steam temperatures are deemed unnecessary for good dryer efficiency. Factors favoring application are listed, as are those U.S. installations similar to the type investigated. Improvements in desired characteristics can be seen from wet and chemical additives and will be accompanied by some degree of negative results in other desired characteristics. Lab work is useful in identifying qualitatively the specific areas where negative and positive effects will be seen. The negative results must then be weighted against the positive gains.

The Britt Jar is a powerful tool for predicting pilot machine behavior and should be used with hand sheet data. Pilot machine data is included as verification of Lab findings.

We identified 22 patients with angiographic left ventricular cavity obliteration (LVCO), of whom 15 were available for M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiographic evaluation. All 15 patients had chest pain, and 13 had long-standing hypertension. Electrocardiographic evidence of left ventricular hypertrophy was present in ten patients. The echocardiographic criterion for LVCO was apposition of the left ventricular septum with the left ventricular posterior endocardium during systole as demonstrated by either M-mode or two-dimensional systems. LVCO was demonstrated during systole by M-mode echocardiography in seven of 15 patients and by two-dimensional echocardiography in 14 patients. LVCO could not be demonstrated in ten randomly …

Continuing problems in the management and surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism include the localization of the elusive single tumor, the recognition and management of multiple gland involvement, prompt confirmation and operative treatment for hypercalcemic crisis, delineation of a liberal but selective policy relative to surgery for apparent uncomplicated hyperparathyroidism in the elderly, and recognition of the surgeon's responsibility to determine the extent of the operation on the basis of operative findings, realizing that histologic study may not confirm apparent gross abnormalities despite subsequent clinical recovery. When all four glands are involved in primary hyperparathyroidism, subtotal parathyroidectomy is recommended except for …

A hyperviscosity syndrome developed in two patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Analytic ultracentrifugation of the sera from one patient demonstrated 22S complexes. Intermediate, 22S, and 31S complexes were found in the second case. Platelet aggregometry and electron microscopy surveys of the platelet reactivity in one patient demonstrated inhibition of platelet reactivity caused by the presence of the high molecular weight complexes. These abnormalities, as well as the clinical bleeding, whole blood, and plasma viscosity, became normal after treatment. In vivo leukocytic function was studied with the Rebuck skin window technique, and phagosomal inclusions were observed in both the polymorphonuclear neutrophils and …

/Among many measurable hormones, human chorionic gonadotropin (FICG) is commonly used for pregnancy testing because it is very sensitive and relatively specific. Pregnancy can be identified shortly after implantation. Because some reagents cross-react with luteinizing hormone (LH), the sensitivity of urine tests has been adjusted to maintain specificity. Radioreceptor assay s on serum are more sensitive than urine tests but similarly lack specificity. The problems of LH cross-reactivity are eliminated by antisera specific for the beta subunit. Quantitation of HCG provides additional information useful in diagnosing ectopic pregnancy, providing a prognosis in threatened abortion, and following neoplasms. Considerations of cost, …

On 5 June 1982, I located a nest of the Louisiana Waterthrush (Seiurus motacilla) in Fontenelle Forest. The location had been determined on 26 April when I, with three others, Tanya Bray, Babs Padelford and B.J. Rose, saw a Waterthrush carrying nesting material. This site was later reported as abandoned. I had first seen a Waterthrush in this area on 15 April and identified it as a Louisiana by its song. On 21 April I saw two foraging together. On the date of the nest building they were silent and easily overlooked; but I heard occasional singing on …
