Fish Feeding-Habit Studies From Tomales Bay, California, Stephen Robert Karl Dec 1978

Fish Feeding-Habit Studies From Tomales Bay, California, Stephen Robert Karl

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Bat Ray, Myliobatis californica Gill, occurs from Oregon to the Gulf of California and is common in California bays during the spring and summer. MacGinitie (1935) observed that during its feeding activities, the Bat Ray can dig channels up to 1 meter wide, 50 cm deep and 4.5 meters long in benthic substrates. In intertidal sand flats in Tomales Bay, California, circular pits up to 1 meter in diameter and 20 cm in depth are made by Bat Rays in late summer. In some areas over 50% of the sand flat surface is covered with Bat Ray pits. This …

Revision Of The Antillean Bats Of The Genus Brachyphylla (Mammalia: Phyllostomatidae), Pierre Swanepoel, Hugh H. Genoways Dec 1978

Revision Of The Antillean Bats Of The Genus Brachyphylla (Mammalia: Phyllostomatidae), Pierre Swanepoel, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Nongeographic and geographic variation have been analyzed in the genus Brachyphylla. which belongs to the Antillean endemic subfamily Phyllonycterinae of the family Phylloslomatidae. Males were found to be generally larger than females: therefore, the sexes were analyzed separately for geographic variation. External measurements except length of forearm were found to displaya high degree of individual variation. They were not used in subsequent analyses. Of cranial measurements, greatest length of skull and condylobasal length showed the least individual variation, whereas palatal length, postorbital breadth (in samples from west of the Mona Passage only), and rostral width at canines showed relatively …

Dose Patterns For ¹⁰⁶Ruo₄ Inhaled By Fischer-344 Rats, Gene E. Runkle

Biology ETDs

Ruthenium-106 is an abundant fission product radionuclide in the nuclear fuel cycle which has potential for release as ruthenium tetroxide. This study was designed to provide additional data needed to adequately assess the risk for humans potentially exposed to 106RuO4vapor. Fiscner-344 rats were given a nose-only exposure to 106RuO4 vapor to determine its distribution and retention patterns. The largest percentage of the initial body burden was found in the nasopharyngeal region of the respiratory tract. Ruthenium-106 deposited in this region was rapidly cleared and excreted in the feces. Less than 1% of the initial body …

Bacteriocin-Like Substances Produced By Rhizobium Japonicum And Other Slow-Growing Rhizobia, D. C. Gross, A. K. Vidaver Dec 1978

Bacteriocin-Like Substances Produced By Rhizobium Japonicum And Other Slow-Growing Rhizobia, D. C. Gross, A. K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Bacteriocin-like substances were commonly produced by slow-growing Rhizobium japonicum and cowpea rhizobia on an L-arabinose medium. Antagonism between strains of R. japonicum was not detected in vitro; however, such strains were often sensitive to some bacteriocins produced by cowpea rhizobia. Inhibitory zones (2 to 8 mm from colony margins), produced by 58 of 66 R. japonicum test strains, were reproducibly detected with Corynebacterium nebraskense as an indicator. Quantitative production was not related to symbiotic properties of effective strains, since nine noninfective strains and one ineffective strain produced bacteriocin. Eight R. japonicum strains that did not produce bacteriocin nevertheless formed effective …

Lichenometric Distribution Of Rhizocarpon Geographicum On Mt. Washington: A Relative Dating Tool., Paul Andrew Mayewski, Peter A. Jeschke

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Excerpt from summary, p. 83: In addition to marking the distribution of snowpatches and the relative age of patterned ground features, local departures from the regional lichenometric trend may also be used to define and relatively date: changes in the distribution of soils and vegetation, avalanche deposits, and abrasion of hiking trails. Lichenometric studies will be undertaken in the following year to date more precisely features and events on Mount Washington.

Review Of The Desert Pocket Gopher, Geomys Arenarius (Mammalia: Rodentia), Stephen L. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The desert pocket gopher (Geomys arenarius), which occupies a restricted geographic range in Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua, was examined for morphological variation. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine age, sexual, individual, and geographic variation. Significant differences were found among different age classes and between sexes. Males displayed higher individual variation than females and external measurements were more variable than cranial measurements. Two subspecies--G. a. arenarius and G. a. brevirostris--were recognized after analyses of geographic variation.

This thesis will deal specifically with this question.

"Controlled Overdrying: Effects On Some Physical Properties Of Fine Paper", John T. Collins Dec 1978

"Controlled Overdrying: Effects On Some Physical Properties Of Fine Paper", John T. Collins

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of certain drying variables on some physical strength properties when these variables were controlled to bring about overdrying conditions. The variables under study were contact time on the dryer can (% moisture) and different percentage hardwood-softwood compositions. From the study it was discovered that overdrying actually increases tensile values but mullen and tear values did indeed decrease.

The object of the following report was to see if there was a decrease, if any, in certain physical properties and to what degree. If overdrying a sheet actually decreases the physical properties …

Effect Of Glyoxylate On The Sensitivity Of Net Photosynthesis To Oxygen (The Warburg Effect) In Tobacco, David J. Oliver Dec 1978

Effect Of Glyoxylate On The Sensitivity Of Net Photosynthesis To Oxygen (The Warburg Effect) In Tobacco, David J. Oliver

David J. Oliver

The addition of glyoxylate to tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) leaf discs inhibited glycolate synthesis and photorespiration and increased net photosynthetic 14CO2 fixation. This inhibition of photorespiration was investigated further by studying the effect of glyoxylate on the stimulation of photosynthesis that occurs when the atmospheric O2 level was decreased from 21 to 3% (the Warburg effect). The Warburg effect is usually ascribed to the increased glycolate synthesis and metabolism that occurs at higher O2 concentrations. Photosynthesis in control discs increased from 59.1 to 94.7 micromoles of CO2 per gram fresh weight per hour (a 60% increase) when the O2 level was …

The Effect Of Pigments In The Flotation De-Inking Of Newsprint, Harold M. Cody Dec 1978

The Effect Of Pigments In The Flotation De-Inking Of Newsprint, Harold M. Cody

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This study was performed to determine the effect of the addition of pigments in the flotation de-inking of newsprint. It has been proposed that pigments aid in the flotation and removal of ink. Two pigments were investigated: talc and diatomaceous earth.

The addition of talc caused the brightness of the sheets to drop because the talc became heavily concentrated with ink. The addition of diatomaceous earth to the cell had no effect upon the flotation and removal of the ink. Therefore the addition of pigments to improve ink flotation and removal cannot be justified.

The Ornithogeography Of The Great Plains States, Paul A. Johnsgard Dec 1978

The Ornithogeography Of The Great Plains States, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

It has long been recognized that the Great Plains represent a major transition zone in the distribution patterns of North American birds; field guides traditionally have treated the 100° W. longitude meridian as a convenient dividing line between eastern and western faunas. Furthermore, this line rather neatly bisects the political subdivisions of the Great Plains, namely the "plains states" extending from North Dakota southward through South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. Of these, Texas is the least typical, its climate and fauna is strongly influenced by the Gulf Coast on the east and the Chihuahuan desert on the west. As …

Seizures And Brain Tumor In Neurologically Intact Adult Patients: Role Of Computerized Tomography (Ct Scan), Jamshid Seifi, Roushdy S. Boulos, Robert D. Teasdall

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

CT scan of 13 patients with adult onset of seizures who were neurologically intact and otherwise asymptomatic revealed a supratentorial mass in all. Significant EEG abnormalities were recorded in five, and the isotope brain scan was positive in eight. In three patients, both studies were normal. Angiograms confirmed the location of tumor, and histology was established following craniotomy. The value of the CT scan as a screening test for detecting brain tumor in this group of seizure patients is evident.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography At Henry Ford Hospital: 1972-1977, Bernard M. Schuman, Kian H. Wong, R. Salimi, A. N. Adham

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Between 7972 and /977, 440 patients underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (FRCP) at Henry Ford Hospital. The procedure was found to be most useful for identifying the site and nature of an extrahepatic obstruction, the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, and the preoperative evaluation of chronic pancreatitis. One death occurred as a result of cholangitis in a patient with cancer of the pancreas. Review of the data has led us to refine our indications for FRCP. It has been shown to be a valuable technique with a low incidence of complications in evaluating pancreaticobiliary disease. Based on our study, it would be …

An Ischemic Infarct In Medulla And Cervical Cord, Ezzatollah Shivapour, Gilbert B. Solitare

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This report documents an unusual case of an occlusion of the anterior spinal artery of the medulla oblongata. The patient presented with involvement of the left accessory nerve and weakness of ipsilateral extremities. The diagnosis of an ischemic infarct in the distribution of the left proximal portion of the anterior spinal artery was made. Bulbar weakness, quadriplegia, and respiratory arrest developed. Postmortem examination, 23 days after onset, revealed an old infarct in the medulla which appeared as a more recent hemorrhagic infarct throughout the cervical cord.

Bone Erosion In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Howard Duncan, Catharina H. E. Mathews, Michael M. Crouch, A. M. Parfitt Dec 1978

Bone Erosion In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Howard Duncan, Catharina H. E. Mathews, Michael M. Crouch, A. M. Parfitt

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A histological study of fully mineralized bone sections was made on thirty joints surgically removed from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The patterns of bone erosion fell into three groups: 1) that due to multinucleated osteoclasts; 2) areas of apparent bone erosion occupied exclusively by mononuclear cells; and 3) changes produced by an osteocyte which could either enlarge the lacuna space in which it resided or demineralize a region of bone in its immediate vicinity. Tissues taken from knee and hip specimens frequently showed all three cellular patterns of bone erosion, while the sections from finger joints rarely container multinucleated osteoclasts …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Surface Of Human Duodenum In Patients With And Without Duodenal Ulcer Disease, Bernard M. Schuman, Klaus Ritter, John H. L. Watson, Jessica Goodwin Dec 1978

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Surface Of Human Duodenum In Patients With And Without Duodenal Ulcer Disease, Bernard M. Schuman, Klaus Ritter, John H. L. Watson, Jessica Goodwin

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Endoscopic biopsy specimens of normal human duodenum from patients with duodenal ulcer disease were studied by light microscopy and by scanning electron microscopy. For scanning, the tissue was dried by the critical point-drying technique. SEM criteria for both normal and abnormal duodenal surfaces were determined. SEM evidence for the presence of "tuft cells" similar to those found on the surface of rat duodenum was found in both the normal and abnormal human material. Although other reports have described the favorable effects of carbenoxolone sodium treatment on duodenal ulcer disease, our SEM studies of four patients found that this treatment had …

A Comparative Study Of The Myosin Light Chain Kinases From Myoblast And Muscle Sources. Studies On The Kinases From Proliferative Rat Myoblasts In Culture, Rat Thigh Muscle, And Rabbit Skeletal Muscle, S. P. Scordilis, R. S. Adelstein Dec 1978

S. Adelstein

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Myosin light chain kinases have been isolated from rat thigh and rabbit skeletal muscle and cultured rat myoblasts. From these preparations, two types of kinases can be distinguished: calcium-dependent and calcium-independent. Both types of kinases can phosphorylate isolated P-light chains of myosin from several sources (skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and platelet). Data are shown which support the phosphorylation of the same site on the non-muscle P-light chains by both types of kinases. The rates of these reactions are, however, different for the two types of kinases. Kinetic analysis of the myoblast kinase show differing affinities for various P-light chains (non-muscle …
