Aortic Cannulation As An Experimental Tool In ¹³⁷Cs Metabolic Studies, Lyman B. Spaulding Dec 1968

Aortic Cannulation As An Experimental Tool In ¹³⁷Cs Metabolic Studies, Lyman B. Spaulding

Biology ETDs

Tissue accumulations of cesium-137 by the white laboratory rat, Rattus norvegicus, were studied by varying the length of time between isotope introduction and sacrifice, the temperature of the animal, and the route of administration of the radioisotope. Most tissues from animals in the normothermic and hypothermic condition accumulated their major 137Cs component within the first minute of isotope introduction. The temperature of the animal (18 C) was observed to influence tissue accumulation. Hypothermia limited uptake of radiocesium by peripheral tissues but enhanced uptake by internal tissues. Route of administration (i.a. and i.p.) differences were observed for only the heart …

Hospital Involvement In Regional Medical Programs, Robert M. O'Bryan

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The purpose of Regional Medical Programs is to improve the care of patients with heart disease. cancer, stroke or related diseases. Rather than subsidizing the cost of patient care, the program encourages the medical profession and medical institutions to establish voluntary, cooperative arrangements that will result in making the latest advances in these diseases available to patients. Programs are planned and implemented at local (Regional) levels through broad-based decision-making processes. This paper reviews five Regional Medical Programs with emphasis on various approaches hospitals are using to implement the program, and lists six criteria applicable to developing operational activities.

Tetracycline-Based Measurements Of The Bone Dynamics In The Rib Of A Girl With Hyperphosphatasia, S. Jett, H. M. Frost Dec 1968

Tetracycline-Based Measurements Of The Bone Dynamics In The Rib Of A Girl With Hyperphosphatasia, S. Jett, H. M. Frost

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Tetracycline-based quantitative histological analysis was made of a rib biopsy taken from a girl afflicted with hyperphosphatasia. The study revealed essentially normal bone dynamics on trabeculae, but greatly increased turnover in the compacta, which was largely composed of woven bone. Since both bone resorption and lamellar bone formation could be unequivocally demonstrated on periosteal, Haversian, and cortical-endosteal surfaces, it is suggested that the direct cause of the cell behavioral abnormality responsible for this disease may arise locally within the bone, but external to the bone cells. Because of its familial nature, however, the ultimate cause probably represents an inborn intracellular …

Management Of Massive Hemoptysis, Eduardo Arciniegas, Conrad R. Lam Dec 1968

Management Of Massive Hemoptysis, Eduardo Arciniegas, Conrad R. Lam

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Massive hemoptysis demands immediate investigation and treatment. Bronchoscopy done while the bleeding is active is essential to accurate localization of the site of origin and the cause of hemorrhage. Emergency pulmonary resection should be carried out if death is to be prevented by suffocation or exsanguination. Illustrative cases are presented.

Tb33: Utilization Of Amino Acids From Proteins: Manual Of Procedures, Hermon Dehaas, Ellen H. Morse

Technical Bulletins

To meet the protein needs of the newly developing countries and the increasing world population, plant proteins and protein mixtures will be required in larger and larger amounts. The proteins studied in this investigation included an animal and a vegetable protein that are important agricultural products of the United States. While general information about the nutritive quality of these proteins is available, this regional study was designed to contribute to an understanding of the reasons for the quality differences and to provide a basis for formulating protein mixtures of high quality using various protein sources.

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Sugar Content Of Enzyme Converted Starch And Pick Values Of A Coated Sheet, David A. Mrochek Dec 1968

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Sugar Content Of Enzyme Converted Starch And Pick Values Of A Coated Sheet, David A. Mrochek

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this experiment was to convert starch by the use of enzyme. The conversion was carried out in a way to produce variations in the reducing sugar contents of the cooked starch. These starches were then applied as the adhesive in a coating mixture. Draw downs were made using the variety of coatings and then the sheets were tested for surface strength. The IGT Pick Tested was used. It was hoped that a definite relationship between sugar contents and pick values could be obtained. This, however, was not the case and the experiment would have to be considered …

Some Observations On Maccoa Duck Behaviour, Paul A. Johnsgard Dec 1968

Some Observations On Maccoa Duck Behaviour, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

The recent comprehensive review of Maccoa Duck Oxyura maccoa biology by Clark (1964) has provlded the first detailed summary of the species' reproductive behaviour patterns and other aspects of breeding in this little-studied stiff-tail. It has been evident that the evolutionary relationships of the Maccoa Duck to the other southern hemisphere stiff-tails and the northern species of Oxyura are still uncertain at best, as evidenced by the varied taxonomic treatment that the Maccoa has received from Delacour and Mayr (1945), who regarded it as a race of O. australis, from Boetticher (1952), who consldered it as a race of O. …

Comparative Osteology Of The Pelvic Girdles Of The Phyllostomatidae (Chiroptera; Mammalia), Dan W. Walton, Gloria M. Walton Dec 1968

Comparative Osteology Of The Pelvic Girdles Of The Phyllostomatidae (Chiroptera; Mammalia), Dan W. Walton, Gloria M. Walton

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The Chilonycterinae are the most primitive of the subfamilies of the Phyllostomatidae. Two basic groups comprise this subfamily: the first includes the genera Pteronotus and Chilonycteris; the second, the genus Mormoops. This grouping is based principally upon the characteristics of the humerus and the innominate. Within the subfamily Phyllostomatinae two types are recognized. The Macrotus-type is considered the more primitive, because of its resemblance to the chilonycterines, and the Phyllustomus-type the more advanced. From these two phyllostomatine groups are derived the more advanced lines of the Phyllostomatidae. The phyllonycterine line appears to be derived from the Macrotus-type. The sturnirine-glossophagine line …

Mourning Dove Status Report, 1967, James L. Ruos, Duncan Mcdonald

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

Nationwide dove population indexes in the 1967 Mourning Dove Status Report were obtained by essentially the same data gathering and analyzing procedures as in 1966. A refinement was made in the base year index, using the mean of the 1966 and 1967 readings as the base for all States. There was a slight adjustment in physiographic region boundaries.

Dietary Supplementation Of Tarhana With Soya Bean Flour And Fish Protein Concentrate, Tahire O.K. Merdol

Masters Theses

Protein malnutrition is a problem in a major portion of the world where good quality protein sources are in short supply and expensive. Extensive studies have been carried out in order to improve the protein quality of certain existing foods which may be more abundant in a given community.

In this study the protein quality of a Turkish soup, tarhana, was determined by measuring its Net Protein Utilization (NPU), Diets containing tarhana were fed to rats at a level which gave 10 percent protein. The effect of supplementing tarhana with either soya bean flour or fish protein concentrate on the …

Distribution Of The Porcupine, Erethizon Dorsatum, In Mexico, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The first Recent record of the porcupine, Erethizon dorsatum, from Mexico comprised fragmentary remains associated with human occupancy from a cave east of Cuatro Cienegas, Coahuila (Gilmore, 1947: 158-159). Later, Benson (1953 : 511-512) reported two specimens from western Sonora from < the lower flood plain of the Rio Sonora, close to the Gulf of California >> (one from 6 miles N Puerto Kino and the other from Rancho Santa Ana, about 45 miles W Hermosillo), and Dickerman (1962: 108) recorded the species from Hda. Las Margaritas in northern Coahuila. No additional reports of Recent porcupines from Mexico have come to our attention, and four specimens of Erethizon dorsatum couesi Mearns, 1897, in the Museum …

Airplane-Seeded Wheat – Aid To Double Cropping, John Watts, S. H. Phillips Dec 1968

Airplane-Seeded Wheat – Aid To Double Cropping, John Watts, S. H. Phillips

Agronomy Notes

Airplane-seeding of wheat has been increasing since its start in 1965 in Fulton County, Kentucky. Over 20,000 acres were seeded in the fall of 1968, with the acreage concentrated in the Purchase and Bowling Green areas.

Farmers report these advantages for aerial seedings: (1) early establishment of small grain; (2) similar seeding cost as compared to drilling; (3) labor use in normal seeding operations diverted to other farm operations.

Ecological Determination Of The Hour Of Nest Opening By An Ant, A. Dwight Smith Dec 1968

Ecological Determination Of The Hour Of Nest Opening By An Ant, A. Dwight Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The timing of daily opening of the nest entrance by the red harvester ant Popnomyrmex californicus was studied during all four seasons. Multiple regression analysis of several , environmental variables shows that the variation from day to day in mean opening time can be attributed to temperature differences, with the time that a given temperature was reached being the most important single variable for the autumn days studied. An equation incorporating this and the minimum temperature was sufficient to specify the mean opening time to within a few minutes. For the spring days, it was necessary to combine sunrise time …
