Effects Of Exercise On Fear Behavior In Zebrafish, Tyler Kuni May 2022

Effects Of Exercise On Fear Behavior In Zebrafish, Tyler Kuni

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The experiment focuses on the behaviors of zebrafish when they are exposed to an environment that causes anxiety or fear behavior and how controlled amounts of exercise will affect the behaviors of the fish. Fearful behavior was measured by the activity level and area of the swimming during the fear conditioning process. We investigated whether the changes in activity level, areas of swimming in the tank, and depth of swimming in the tank were significant as well as if there was an interaction effect between the fear conditioning and our dependent variables. Zebrafish were randomly assigned to three groups: the …

The Effects Of Wearing A Sports Mask Compared To A Standard Surgical Face Mask During The Forestry 5 Minute Submaximal Step Test, Christian Kumar May 2022

The Effects Of Wearing A Sports Mask Compared To A Standard Surgical Face Mask During The Forestry 5 Minute Submaximal Step Test, Christian Kumar

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The existence of the COVID-19 global pandemic has forced the introduction of wearing face masks when in public spaces or in near proximity to others. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the physiological effects and perceptions of wearing a sports mask compared to a standard surgical face mask during exercise. Nineteen subjects, 10 male and 9 female subjects ranging between 19-25 years of age completed the 5-minute Forestry Step Test randomized to wear either an Under Armour sports mask, a standard surgical mask, or wearing no mask. Resting and post-exercise heart rate, RPE, and metabolic data was …

Efficacy Of A Motivational Video On Heart Rate, Rpe, And Total Work Performed During Stationary Cycling, Hannah Angelella Apr 2020

Efficacy Of A Motivational Video On Heart Rate, Rpe, And Total Work Performed During Stationary Cycling, Hannah Angelella

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Sedentary lifestyles are a very common way of life for 21st century Americans. Lack of enjoyment and motivation are two common factors that deter people from engaging in physical activity and exercise on a regular basis (1). However, it has been found that visual stimulation may help motivate or distract from exertion (2–4). The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of watching a motivational video (Tour de France (MV)) versus a calming video (Bob Ross painting (PV)) while cycling. Ten recreationally active subjects from the University of Lynchburg staff, faculty, and student population partook in a within-subjects …

Effects Of Daily Forced Exercise On Anxiety Of Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Living In Impoverished Environments, Meagan Collins Jan 2018

Effects Of Daily Forced Exercise On Anxiety Of Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Living In Impoverished Environments, Meagan Collins

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of forced exercise on anxiogenic behavior in Danio rerio living in different environmental conditions. To study this relationship, zebrafish were introduced to the following housing environments for several weeks. Fish in Group 1 were exposed to brown gravel and green, plastic plants (enriched environment), and fish in Group 2 were exposed to no brown gravel and no green, plastic plants (impoverished, structurally-barren environment). Fish from both housing environments were randomly assigned to be exposed to exercise or no exercise (control). Fish in the exercise group were forced to swim against …

The Effects Of Music On Heart Rate And Perceived Exertion During 20 Minutes Of Treadmill Running, Tara Litz Apr 2006

The Effects Of Music On Heart Rate And Perceived Exertion During 20 Minutes Of Treadmill Running, Tara Litz

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This study examined the effects of music on heart rate (HR) as well as ratings of perceived exertion (RPE-B) while running on a treadmill for 20 minutes. Research subjects included men and women, ages 18 to 25. All subjects completed a 20-minute treadmill run set at 5.0 mph with 0% grade. Omron heart monitors were used to measure and record subjects’ HR every 2 minutes after the start of the test. Subjects reported ratings of perceived exertion -using the Borg Scale- which was also recorded every two minutes throughout the test period. One treadmill session included music; the other session …
