Morton’s egg cockle, Laevicardium mortoni, is common in shallow subtidal
habitats from Nova Scotia to Brazil, but little is known of its biology and ecology.
Field studies were conducted in the Peconic Bays of Long Island, New
York to examine population and life history parameters such as density,
growth, and age at first reproduction. Suction dredging was conducted at
three sites to examine whether density varied with depth and sediment
type. Condition Indexes for a range of cockle sizes were quantified weekly
at two sites to estimate age and size at first reproduction. Growth rates and

Candida auris is a novel and emerging fungal pathogen capable of causinginvasive, and often fatal, bloodstream and wound infections in immunocompromised patients. Several outbreaks have been reported in hospitals across the world, including the United States, and predominantly in New York. C.auris exhibits extensive multidrug resistance that has never been seen in any Candida species, and is often misdiagnosed for other Candida species, thus limiting treatment options for patients. Our laboratory obtained 10 C. auris isolates in order to perform in vitro antifungal susceptibility testing and determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) under Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. …

Chromatin is the complex of proteins and DNA that makes up eukaryotic
chromosomes. Chromatin helps the DNA fit inside the nucleus as well as
regulating what can access the DNA. Replication, repair, and transcription
are all impeded by chromatin. These processes only occur efficiently
when chromatin is disassembled. Just as chromatin limits how proteins
can access the DNA, we hypothesized that it would also protect DNA. We
used the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to study how chromatin affects
cellular sensitivity to the DNA alkylating agent methyl methanesulfonate
(MMS). MMS alkylation can lead to DNA mismatches, nicks, and double

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a heterogeneous group of heritable connective
tissue disorders. Patients with EDS often show a wide range of
clinical manifestations, which most often include joint hypermobility, connective
tissue fragility and skin hyperextensibility. The symptomatology of
individuals with EDS-Hypermobile Type (EDS-HT) is complex and can range
in severity from mild to profound with several studies reporting multisystem
involvement. In addition to the aforementioned symptoms, there
is a significant risk for comorbid psychiatric disorders. Currently, genetics

The channeled whelk, Busycotypus canaliculatus, is a commercially valuable gastropod found on the east coast of the United States. In New York, the channeled whelk fishery is largely unregulated, due to a lack of knowledge regarding the life history of the species. This study focuses on determining the age and size at first reproduction of the channeled whelk population in the Great South Bay, on the southern shore of Long Island. Tip60 is a lysine acetyltransferase (KAT), coded by the KAT5 gene, which is involved in transcription, DNA repair, and apoptosis. It acetylates histones, the ATM protein kinase, and the p53 tumor suppressor, among other targets, making it a key regulator of cell homeostasis. Tip60 has been shown to be a tumor suppressor in most cancers but an oncogene in prostate cancer. Some of Tip60’s functions take place in the nucleus while others occur in the cytoplasm. Babesiosis is a tickborne disease caused by Babesia microti, an intracellular parasite of red blood cells. Presently, B. microti is the most common and deadly pathogen transmitted by blood transfusion. B. microti infects humans via Ixodes scapularis ticks, the same vector carrying Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Co-infection with these two diseases increases the severity of symptoms, posing a major therapeutic challenge. We aimed to determine the co-infection rate of B. microti in individuals who tested positive for Lyme disease.
