Prediction Error Variances For Interbreed Genetic Evaluations, L. Dale Van Vleck, Larry V. Cundiff

A table for adjusting expected progeny differences (EPD) to a base year and breed basis depends on analyses of records of progeny of bulls of different breeds in a common environment and requires that those reference bulls also have other progeny to provide within-breed EPD. Currently, the germ plasm evaluation project at the Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) provides such a common environment for reference bulls of several breeds for estimation of breed differences for the reference sires. Reference sire estimates of breed differences are adjusted by the difference between average EPD of reference bulls and average EPD for the …

Breed Comparisons For Growth Traits Adjusted For Within-Breed Genetic Trend Using Expected Progeny Differences, R. Nunez-Dominguez, L. Dale Van Vleck, Larry V. Cundiff Jan 1993

Records (2,910) of birth (BWT), weaning (WW), and yearling weight (YW) of F1 calves produced in a top-cross experiment involving Angus, Hereford, Pooled Hereford, Charolais, Limousin, Simmental, Gelbvieh, Maine-Anjou, Chianina, Tarentaise, Shorthorn, and Salers bulls mated to Hereford and Angus cows and records (4,592) of WW on three-breed-cross calves out of 986 F1 females of the same breed crosses were used in this study. The purposes were to estimate how much of the EPD of the sires was realized in crossbred calves and to estimate sire breed effects for the traits adjusted for genetic trend and sire sampling. …

Estimated Breeding Values For Meat Characteristics Of Crossbred Cattle With An Animal Mode1, L. Dale Van Vleck, A. F. Hakim, Larry V. Cundiff, R. M. Koch, J. D. Crouse, K. G. Boldman Aug 1991

Longissimus muscle area, shear force measure, and sensory panel scores for flavor, juiciness, and tenderness, and marbling score were obtained from 682 steer carcasses, resulting from crosses among five Bos taurus and Bos indicus breeds. The single-trait model used included birth year and as covariates breed fractions, weaning age, and days on feed. The numerator relationship matrix was for 1,350 animals (682 steers, 74 pure breed and 52 F1-cross sires and 542 dams). The coefficient matrix was inverted to examine standard errors of prediction. Estimated breeding value is the sum of the estimate of genetic deviation and the weighted (fractions) …

Individual Heterosis And Breed Effects For Postweaning Performance And Carcass Traits In Four Breeds Of Swine, D. G. Mclaren, D. S. Buchanan, R. K. Johnson Jun 1987

Individual Heterosis And Breed Effects For Postweaning Performance And Carcass Traits In Four Breeds Of Swine, D. G. Mclaren, D. S. Buchanan, R. K. Johnson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Individual heterosis and direct and maternal breed effects for postweaning average daily gain (ADG), off-test age (AGE) and probed backfat thickness (BF) were estimated from data on 1,664 pigs produced in a complete diallel mating system involving the Duroc, Yorkshire, Landrace and Spotted breeds. The same genetic parameters were estimated for various carcass traits by analyses of data collected on 269 barrow carcasses. Significant breed x environment (i.e., year-season farrowed, parity and sex) interactions were found for ADG, AGE and BF. Specific heterosis estimates for ADG and AGE were all highly significant and reasonably consistent among crosses. Overall heterosis for …
