Summary Of The Effects Of Agnes On Oyster Setting In Virginia In 1972, Dexter Haven, William J. Hargis Jr.
Reports
Oyster setting in Virginia River systems dropped to the lowest level on record during 1972. Spatfall studies indicate this poor condition to be the direct result of the effects of tropical storm Agnes.
Heavy Metals In Oysters From Virginia Since Tropical Storm Agnes, Robert J. Huggett
Heavy Metals In Oysters From Virginia Since Tropical Storm Agnes, Robert J. Huggett
Reports
Rainfall from tropical storm Agnes caused the salinity of the major estuaries entering the Chesapeake Bay to be drastically lowered. Bottom sediments normally subjected to 10 to 15 salinities were under fresh water. Heavy metals, pesticides and other pollutants adsorbed to these bottom sediments were undoubtedly mobilized. These once "stored" concentrations were augmented by the massive amounts of erosional products which created a high pollution potential. in shellfish in the Chesapeake Bay. For this reason the Virginia Institute of Marine Science asked for and received financial assistance from the Food and Drug Administration to assess the changes in heavy metal …

Estimated Growth Functions And Size-Age Relationships Of The Hard Clam, Mercenaria Mercenaria, In The York River, Virginia, Joseph G. Loesch, Dexter S. Haven
VIMS Articles
A study of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria (Linnaeus, 1758) resources of Virginia is currently being conducted. One important aspect, their growth in this region, has been limited to the study of small juveniles (HAVEN & ANDREWS, 1957). Our objectives were to demonstrate that M. mercenaria growth functions could readily be derived and statistically contrasted, and, subsequently, the age-size relationship could be estimated.

Larval Culture Of The Calico Scallop, Argopecten Gibbus, T. J. Costello, J.Harold Hudson, John L. Dupuy, Samuel Rivkin
VIMS Articles
Mature calico scallops, Argopecten gibbus, collected from the grounds off Cape Kennedy, Florida, were induced to spawn in the laboratory. Fertilized eggs were reared to postlarvae in sea water of 23° C ± 2.0° C at a salinity of 35 %o. The external morphology of eggs and developing larval stages are described.

Lymphocystis In Fish From East African Lakes, Ilan Paperna
VIMS Articles
Lymphocystis is described for the first time from Africa. Lymphocystis infected cells formed clusters on the tails of cichlid fishes from East African lakes. Small rounded inclusion bodies and many large vacuoles were observed in the cytoplasm of the hypertrophied cells.

The Marine Algae Of Virginia And Maryland Including The Chesapeake Bay Area, Franklyn D. Ott
The Marine Algae Of Virginia And Maryland Including The Chesapeake Bay Area, Franklyn D. Ott
VIMS Articles
Until 1965 there existed no publication treating any aspect of the benthic or attached marine algae of the coast of Virginia and Maryland including the Chesapeake Bay area. Prior to this date only minor references to particular species for this area .,can be found in the literature. This paucity of research can be attributed, in the main, to the lack of solid substrata permitting prolonged and extensive development of algal populations. Time spent on more favorable habitats such as the rocky shores of the New England coast offer, to the phycologist, far more rewarding results for his endeavors. (...)

Malate Dehydrogenase And Tetrazolium Oxidase Of Scyphistomae Of Aurelia-Aurita, Chrysaora-Quinquecirrha, And Cyanea-Capillata (Scyphozoa-Semaeostomeae), Al Lin, Pl Zubkoff
VIMS Articles
Three species of scyphozoan jellyfishes, Aurelia aurita (LINNAEUS 1758), Chry- saora quinquecirrha (Desor 1848), and Cyanea capillata (LINNAEUS 1758) are commonly found in Chesapeake Bay. Because of the uncertainty in the identification of jellyfish scyphistomae (polyps) collected from the field, CALDER (1971) used the nematocyst complement for distinguishing polyps of these different species. BURNETT & GOULD (1971) used an immunological assay to differentiate polyps of Aurelia aurita and Chrysaora quinquecirrha from those of Cyanea capillata.
In this study, the MDH and tetrazolium oxidase (TO) isozyme patterns of the polyps of Chesapeake Bay Aurelia aurita, Chrysaora quinquecirrha, and Cyanea capitlata are …

Growth And Survival Of The Bay Scallop, Argopecten Irradians, At Various Locations In The Water Column And At Various Densities, William Duggan
VIMS Articles
Two experiments were carried out in 1971 using bay scallops spawned in Aug and Sept of 1970. 4 groups of 150 scallops were held at the surface, 1 m below the surface, 2 m off the bottom, and 1 m off the bottom, to find the effects of depth on growth and survival. Scallops were held in surface enclosures at 4 different densities (100, 75, 50 and 25/ft super(2)) to find out the effects of crowding. In the depth experiment growth was approx equal throughout the water column. Mortality decreased with increasing depth with the exception of those held at …
