International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(5): 666-680, 2017. Fibronectin type III domain-containing 5 (FNDC5) is a skeletal muscle membrane-bound precursor to the myokine irisin. Irisin is involved in stimulating adipose tissue to become more metabolically active in order to produce heat. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of exercise in a hot (33 °C), cold (7 °C), and room temperature (RT, 20 °C) environment on the skeletal muscle gene expression of FNDC5 and the plasma concentrations of irisin. Twelve recreationally trained males completed three separate, 1 h cycling bouts at 60% of Wmax in a …

Effect Assessment Of Tio2 Nanoparticles Exposure On Medicago By Monitoring Morphophysiology, Charles Towey Jul 2017

Effect Assessment Of Tio2 Nanoparticles Exposure On Medicago By Monitoring Morphophysiology, Charles Towey

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In recent years titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) have been ingredients in everything from paints to cosmetics, and even in some kinds of food. This growth in use has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of titanium released into the environment, which could have detrimental effects on nearby plant and animal life. Currently, the number of studies conducted on the effects of TiO2NPs is quite small, especially when it comes to edible crops. Because of this lack of research data, this study has been designed to assess the effect of TiO2 NPs exposure on …

The Acute Impact Of A High-Fat Load On Pbmcs Among Women: The Impact Of Ethnicity And Weight Status, Regis Pearson Apr 2017

The Acute Impact Of A High-Fat Load On Pbmcs Among Women: The Impact Of Ethnicity And Weight Status, Regis Pearson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) can respond to dietary stimuli modulating the up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cell signaling, which is associated with metabolic disease and has been seen to be elevated in African American (AA) when compared to Caucasian American (CA) women. Little is known about the response of PBMCs to a high fat meal among women and the potential impact of ethnicity and/or weight status on this response. The purpose of this study was to examine PBMC response to consuming a high fat meal and the response to culturing PBMCs in media supplemented with lipid among AA and CA women, …
