Removal of conifers encroaching aspen stands has been advocated and is being practiced in the Lake Tahoe Basin (EIP Project #10080: Aspen Community Restoration Projects). In remote and roadless areas, thinning of conifers is generating large volumes of wood and pile burning is currently being implemented to handle this biomass on site. However, the effects of pile burning on aspen are unknown, and there is an urgent need for guidelines to support design of thinning treatment prescriptions; specifically burn pile size and safe distances from live aspen trees of any size to prevent injury.

Grazing impact by elk and moose has been a point of concern in Jackson Hole for many years. Concern has been primarily directed towards sparsely vegetated south aspects, aspen stands, and willow bottoms. Numerous transects have quantified heavy foliage utilization. Trend studies have been mostly inconclusive. Study of historical narratives have quantified heavy forage utilization. Trend studies have been mostly inconclusive. Study of historical narratives, early photographs and consideration of plant physiology, soils data, and fire ecology have aided interpretations of vegetal trend and plant succession in recent years. The impact of different forest types on streamflow or groundwater recharge must be considered in evaluating multiple-use alternatives. The impact of species conversion on streamflow has been directly measured at the Coweeta Experimental Watersheds in North Carolina. However, the use of net precipitation1 data, with appropriate cautions, provides a practical basis for estimating water yield differences between forest types where long-term streamflow comparisons are not available.
