Climate change is the major factor that affects crop yield and productivity in the long term. The changing climate scenario is now impacting farmers’ lands and their outcomes in both developed and developing countries. The intercropping of crop species or varieties that have high arable capability is a promising technique for increasing crop production without increasing agricultural inputs. In intercropping, the selection of varieties, optimum sowing time, method of plant arrangement, and sowing proportion are required to make the design suitable for an intercropping system. Intercropping is one of the most highlighted agronomic practices helping to improve soil health (structure, …

Increasing Temperatures Can Pose An Opportunity To Recover Endemic And Endangered Oriental Sweetgum Tree (Liquidambar Orientalis Mill.) From Extinction, Okan Ürker, Nurbahar Usta Baykal, Eren Ada

Turkish Journal of Botany

Evidence suggests that past climatic oscillations caused many species to drastically change their distribution range and had significant impacts on their survival capabilities. There is significant evidence suggesting that today's changing climate threatens many species to face a rapid extinction period in the coming decades and centuries. Understanding the changing range patterns provides significant input on biodiversity and conservation biology studies. However, warming climatic conditions may also present an opportunity for some species to expand their habitats?particularly those adapted to warmer environments. In this study, we asked how near-future climate change will affect the distribution range of the oriental sweetgum …

Experimental Design Of Open-Field Temperature And Precipitation Manipulation System To Simulate Summer Extreme Climate Events For Plants And Soils, Gwang Jung Kim, Heejae Jo, Hyeonji Kim, Min Seok Cho, Nam-Jin Noh, Hanna Chang, Hyung-Sub Kim, Yowhan Son

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Extreme climate events are expected to occur very frequently and intensively with climate change, and such extreme events can induce irreversible damage to plants and soils, as well as ecosystems. Accordingly, there is a need to understand the effects of extreme climate events on ecosystems. Here, we designed a temperature and precipitation manipulation system to simulate extreme climate events of heat, drought, and heavy rainfall. We constructed three soil surface temperature manipulation levels (control, 3 °C, and 6 °C increases) and three precipitation manipulation levels (control, drought, and heavy rainfall) with six replicates, and operated these from day of year …

Distributional Ecology Of Noccaea Vesicaria In Relation To The Anatolian Diagonal, İlayda Dumlupinar, Hakan Gür, Bariş Özüdoğru

Turkish Journal of Botany

Anatolia is located at the intersection of three of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots (the Caucasus, Irano-Anatolian, and Mediterranean Basin biodiversity hotspots) and has about 10,000 plant species, over 3000 of which are endemic. Among the many reasons for the astonishing biodiversity of Anatolia, one that stands out is the Anatolian Diagonal. Although the Anatolian Diagonal has long been recognized as a biogeographical boundary between Central and Eastern Anatolia, its exact functioning is still not well understood. Thus, in this study, our aims were 1) to assess the environmental barrier function of the Anatolian Diagonal for a plant species, Noccaea …

High Temperatures Adversely Affect The Hoverfly Episyrphus Balteatus(Diptera: Syrphidae) Fitness And Aphid Prey Consumption, Gregoire Noel, Jessica Caetano, Solene Blanchard, Antoine Boullis, Frederic Francis

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Numerous studies have shown that an increase of environmental temperature could directly disturb insect larval development. Natural enemies of insect pests, particularly predators of aphid populations, are not spared. Following temperature predictions of Belgian climate change scenario, the goal of this study is to measure life-history traits, such as the mass, body length and aphid consumption (Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris, 1776)) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) of Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer, 1776) (Diptera: Syrphidae) larvae under three constant temperature treatments (i.e. 20, 23, and 26 °C). We detected no significant differences between 20 °C and 23 °C on the hoverflies larval development, their aphidophagous …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant cells under environmental stress cause oxidative stress, which is one of major factors limiting the plant productivity. To prevent this limitation by stress conditions, a possible strategy is to strengthen the antioxidant defense of plants by gene manipulation of antioxidant enzymes and low molecular-weight (LMW) antioxidants. LMW antioxidants are important for the plant protection to environmental stress and also have nutritional merits for humans as antiaging and antidisease molecules. Sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] as a nutritional food crop has many advantages in terms of the cultivation on the global marginal lands. …

Will Ferulago Glareosa Kandemir And Hedge (Apiaceae) Be Extinct In The Near Future?, İdri̇s Sari, Ali̇ Kandemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Botany

Turkey is one of the most important temperate countries on Earth in terms of plant diversity. There is a growing interest in understanding habitat suitability and future distributions of species in the scientific world. Because climate change has impacted ecosystems with major consequences, species are shifting and declining much faster than in the past. Some global climate models used for predicting climate in the future better represent and have higher reliability for some climate types.Ferulago glareosa , which lives in Turkey, is a rare endemic plant species. In this study, we investigated current and future distributions of the species determined …

Species abundance (49.2 individuals/site) was found to be greater in Zonguldak than in Bartın (33 individuals/site), but the number of species per sampling site was higher in Bartın (0.48 spp./site) than in Zonguldak …

Short-Term Changes Of Leaf Area Index, Light Transmission, And Gap In A Temperate Mixed Deciduous Forest Ecosystem In Bartın, Turkey, İlyas Bolat, Ömer Kara, Meli̇h Öztürk Jan 2016

Short-Term Changes Of Leaf Area Index, Light Transmission, And Gap In A Temperate Mixed Deciduous Forest Ecosystem In Bartın, Turkey, İlyas Bolat, Ömer Kara, Meli̇h Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, leaf area index (LAI), light transmission, and gap were estimated by using the hemispherical photograph analysis technique with Hemisfer software version 1.5.3 for a temperate mixed deciduous forest. The height of the overall vegetation in the stand ranged from 15 to 20 m, and the diameters of the trees in the stand at breast height varied between 14 and 28 cm. This study showed that the mean value of LAI increased by 4% in the 5-year period from 2007 to 2012. LAI was significantly (P < 0.05) greater in 2012 than in 2007, whereas the mean percentage of light transmission was significantly lower in 2012 than it was in 2007. In addition, there was a significant (P < 0.01) correlation between LAI and light transmission, and there was also a statistically significant correlation between the gap and light transmission (P < 0.05). According to long-term meteorological data (1982-2012), this study also demonstrated that the mean air temperature rose approximately 1.0 °C between 2007 and 2012. Consequently, this study indicated that LAI varies with respect to time and the increase of LAI leads to a decrease in light transmission. Additionally, the air temperature and precipitation have a significant influence on the LAI.

Impact Of Warm Weather Events On Prolongation Of The Life Cycle Ofstomaphis Walker (Hemiptera, Aphididae, Lachninae), Lukasz Depa, Artur Taszakowski, Mariusz Kanturski Jan 2015

Impact Of Warm Weather Events On Prolongation Of The Life Cycle Ofstomaphis Walker (Hemiptera, Aphididae, Lachninae), Lukasz Depa, Artur Taszakowski, Mariusz Kanturski

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Termination of the life cycle of sexually reproducing aphids usually takes place in autumn, during October and November, in the climatic conditions of Central Europe. However, episodes of warm weather are suspected to trigger prolongation of the life cycle. Observations of Stomaphis spp. İn early winter of 2013/2014 in southern Poland support this thesis. Surprisingly, adult females of two species were collected as late as early January and early March. High daily temperatures during this period were the probable cause of aphid survival, despite frosty nights. The possibility of the influence of warm weather episodes (higher temperature) on prolongation of …

Global Perspectives On First Generation Liquid Biofuel Production, Rok Fink, Saso Medved Jan 2011

Global Perspectives On First Generation Liquid Biofuel Production, Rok Fink, Saso Medved

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Transport today is mostly sustained by liquid fossil fuels, despite the fact that the invention of the combustion engine started with biofuels. However, known environmental impacts and the instability of the fossil-fuel market have revived the status of biofuels. Some concerns have appeared regarding how emerging global climate changes will affect biofuels' feedstock production, since agriculture is strongly dependent on climate variables. Therefore, numerical models were introduced to calculate how temperature and precipitation could affect crop production for biodiesel and bioethanol production. Furthermore, 4 scenarios projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change were put into the calculations. The results …

Strategies For Conserving Forest Genetic Resources In The Face Of Climate Change, John Bradley St.Clair, Glenn Thomas Howe Jan 2011

Strategies For Conserving Forest Genetic Resources In The Face Of Climate Change, John Bradley St.Clair, Glenn Thomas Howe

Turkish Journal of Botany

Conservation of genetic diversity is important for continued evolution of populations to new environments, as well as continued availability of traits of interest in genetic improvement programs. Rapidly changing climates present new threats to the conservation of forest genetic resources. We can no longer assume that in situ reserves will continue to preserve existing genetic diversity. Management of reserves should become more active. In some reserves, existing genetic diversity should be preserved by creating stands that are more resistant to threats using silvicultural treatments such as thinning and prescribed burning. In other reserves, natural selection and adaptation to changed environments …

Effects Of Climate Change On Water Resources Of The Büyük Menderes River Basin, Western Turkey, Ömer Faruk Durdu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Temperature and rainfall changes are both significant components of climate change. This study characterizes the effects of climate change on water resources in the Büyük Menderes river basin in western Turkey, based on hydrology, temperature, and rainfall data from the past 45 years (1963-2007). When analyzed with the Mann-Whitney test, the temperature and precipitation time series exhibited obvious step changes with a 5% level of significance. Both the parametric t-test and nonparametric Mann-Kendall statistical test results showed an increasing trend of the temperature. Over the past 45 years, the temperature increased just about 1 °C. The long-term trend of annual …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was carried out to determine the impacts of climate change on aridity and land cover in Turkey. Data for future (2070s) climate change, according to present conditions (1990s), were estimated from the prediction results of a regional climate model (RCM). The RCM, which was developed in Japan, is based on the MRI model. The potential impacts of climate change were estimated according to the A2 scenario of Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES). Aridity index, the ratio of precipitation to potential evapotranspiration, was computed by using measured data for the present condition and estimated data by the RCM …
