Preliminary Phylogeny Of The Thrips Parasitoids Of Turkey Based On Some Morphological Scales And 28s D2 Rdna, With Description Of A New Species, Oguzhan Doğanlar, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar, Anne Frary

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Species of the Ceranisus thrips-attacking genus are difficult to distinguish morphologically. The phylogenetic relationships within the Ceranisus species were explored using nucleotide sequences of the 28S D2 expansion region of the rDNA gene. Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and parsimony inference methods were employed to construct the phylogenetic relationships. Principal component analysis on the Turkish species of Ceranisus, namely antalyacus, menes, bozovaensis, hirsutus, planitianus (a new record for Turkey), pacuvius, and a new species, provided supporting evidence. All known data concerning hosts and geographical distribution are presented. A new species, C. onuri O. Doganlar, sp.n., was described from Turkey.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Possibilities for the management of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) on stored products using coloured lighting systems was assessed in this study. Adult beetles were exposed in a choice chamber to red, blue, green, and clear tungsten light. T. castaneum adults preferred tungsten, blue, and green lights, and avoided red light. For each colour, beetles were separately reared for 3 generations. Beetles preferred the colour in which they were reared, except for red, which was avoided even by the beetles reared in a red-coloured environment for 3 generations under duress. These beetles moved towards clear tungsten light in a choice chamber. It …

The Effect Of Caloric Restriction On The Population Density Of Freshwater Rotifers (Brachionus Calyciflorus), Ni̇lgün Özdemi̇r, Abdulkadi̇r Çi̇ltaş

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The effects of caloric restriction (CR) on the population density of freshwater rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) were investigated in the present study. During experiments with different CRs, groups of rotifers were fed with Chlorella sp. at the same concentrations of 1.5 × 10^6 cells/mL at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 h intervals for 20 days. Significant changes were observed both in the population density and the peak days in groups subjected to different CRs (P < 0.01). The highest peak in population density was obtained on the fifth day for rotifers fed in 12 h intervals (269 ± 40.12 individuals/mL, mean ± SD). The rate of population increase (r) varied from 0.608 ± 0.073 to 0.288 ± 0.053, depending on the feeding intervals. The results show that CR affected the population density of B. calyciflorus.

Fifty three R. rutilus specimens were therefore investigated for spatial distribution of D. crucifer in March 2006. No significant differences in distribution were found according to any of the spatial determinants.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Parasitism of lepidopteran larvae by braconid wasps has significant effects on host hemolymph proteins and the physiology of the host insect. In this study the post-parasitism effects of a gregarious idiobiont ectoparasitoid (Bracon hebetor) on hemolymph plasma proteins in the final instar larvae of the host (Ephestia kuehniella) were investigated. Hemolymph plasma proteins were analyzed using spectrophotometry and sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Total quantity of plasma proteins in the host's hemolymph decreased slightly 24 and 48 h after parasitization; however, SDS-PAGE analysis showed that the quantity of 12 proteins decreased, whereas that of 5 proteins increased in …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Mesopotamian spiny eels, Mastacembelus mastacembelus (Banks & Solender, 1794), were collected from a large dam lake located on the Euphrates River in order to determine the most reliable ageing method among different hard structures and to estimate growth parameters. Vertebra, otolith, and opercle series were removed from 195 individuals. Vertebrae displayed the most interpretable annulus formations. Total length ranged from 14.4 cm to 76.9 cm and total weight ranged from 6.0 g to 950.0 g. The length and weight frequency distribution was significantly different between the 2 sexes (K-S test, P < 0.001). The length-weight relationship, determined as W = 0.004TL^{2.84} (r = 0.98), revealed no sex-based significant difference (GLM, P > 0.05). Age classes ranged from 1 to 21 years …

Tension wood is considered to be an important defect by the wood processing industries. A considerable amount of research has been done to determine the presence and structure of tension wood; however, there is a need to find a quick, practical, and applicable method to evaluate the severity of tension wood. This study investigated whether zinc-chlorine-iodide (Herzberg reagent) could be applied in determination of tension wood severity. Fagus sylvatica L. (beech wood), Populus alba L. (poplar wood), and Quercus robur L. and Quercus rubra L. (oak wood) species were used in this study. The results were compared with safranin/astra blue …

Cloning, Characterization, And Expression Of The Gene Encoding Polygalacturonase- Inhibiting Proteins From Strawberry, Yong Zhang, Hao-Ru Tang, Yan-Xia Hou, Hao Jiang, Ya Luo, Jie Zhang

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIP) play important roles in the defense against plant pathogens, especially fungi. The sequence of strawberry PGIP gene was obtained using reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and its expression in different tissues was studied by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. A cDNA fragment of FaPGIP gene was cloned and the sequence analysis shows that the fragment contains a full ORF of 999 bp encoding 332 amino acids. The FaPGIP gene from genomic DNA shows a single 168bp intron that is efficiently spliced out of the FaPGIP pre-mRNA transcript. The FaPGIP has a high degree of identity with previously isolated PGIP genes and …

Parametric Modeling Of Root Length Density And Root Water Uptake In Unsaturated Soil, Sina Besharat, Amir Hossein Nazemi, Ali Ashraf Sadraddini Jan 2010

Parametric Modeling Of Root Length Density And Root Water Uptake In Unsaturated Soil, Sina Besharat, Amir Hossein Nazemi, Ali Ashraf Sadraddini

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The problem of water movement through the root zone has attracted increasing interest during the last few decades. In this research, the spatial and temporal pattern of root water uptake in wetted soil was studied in the root zone of a 6-year-old apple tree. An important part of the root water uptake model is root length density, which was measured by sampling soil cores in one quarter of the root zone. The exponential model better described the observed apple root distribution. The measured data were compared against the outputs of the root density distribution model. A normalized root length density …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In vitro morphogenesis of Cucumis melo var. flexuosus (L.) Naudin was studied by direct organogenesis. Induction of adventitious buds was obtained from distal and proximal parts of the cotyledon incubated on Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium containing different concentrations of 6-benzyladenine (BA) (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg L^{-1}) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (0.0, 0.1, and 0.5 mg L^{-1}). The best organogenesis was obtained from the proximal part of the cotyledon on medium containing 0.5 mg L^{-1} BA and 0.5 mg L^{-1} IAA (88%). This concentration was used for histological analysis. Less regeneration was obtained on media containing 1.0 mg …
