Fun Along The Road To Recovery, Donald Clayton

SDSU Extension Circulars

Lengthy sick bed confinements can mean hours of boredom. When the hours drag on tediously, the mind and emotions do things which doctors agree may hinder convalescence. Anyone caring for the sick knows that enforced idleness can make the patient restless, irritable, and unreasonable. And sometimes; even after the patient recovers, this attitude continues with lasting effect.

South Dakota's Farm And Home Development Program, Lyle Bender Jun 1955

South Dakota's Farm And Home Development Program, Lyle Bender

SDSU Extension Circulars

The South Dakota Farm and Home Development Program is a family approach to farm planning with better family living as the end objective. Farm and home development differs from other methods of planning in that the farm family considers its problems as a whole, rather than on a piecemeal basis. This is achieved through careful study and selection of alternate choices in searching for solutions to problems. Decisions are based on needs and desires, farm and family resources, economic trends, available markets and credit, and the supply of capital and labor. Farm and home development is not a custom built …

Irrigating Vegetables And Small Fruits, Martin Fogel, Lloyd Ayres Jun 1955

Irrigating Vegetables And Small Fruits, Martin Fogel, Lloyd Ayres

SDSU Extension Circulars

Vegetables and small fruits are grown more extensively in South Dakota than most people realize. Almost every farm has a garden where vegetables and small fruits are grown for immediate use. In every town and city, gardens of varying sizes are found. These home gardens produce a large amount of wholesome, high nutritional food. Market gardening is an important enterprise near the larger towns in South Dakota. It is a highly specialized business, though oftentime it is done on a very limited acreage. The detrimental effects of prolonged dry periods, which have caused complete failure of vegetable and small fruit …

Meet Music, Marvel Labrie

"Confidentially, this long-haired stuff is not for me. I don't really know a thing about music, and I can't carry a tune in a bushel basket." With this pessimistic statement, many of us close the door to a whole new world of enjoyment. It does seem confusing when we hear people conversing in longhandled terms about symphonies, sonatas, oratorios, writing styles, and the like. Immediately, we become frightened by their apparent knowledge of music. Don't be misled by that big talk, which may even be done just to impress you. Knowledge of those terms doesn't mean that they enjoy music …

Shelterbelt Care, E.K. Ferrell May 1955

Shelterbelt Care, E.K. Ferrell

SDSU Extension Circulars

Weeds affect young trees in the same way they affect other crops. Weeds rob trees of moisture, plant food and light. This often results in the death of most of the trees. Those that do manage to live are stunted. Planting a shelterbelt is a waste of time, money and land unless the planting is cultivated throughout its early life. Your young shelterbelt trees need the same care as any other row crop until they are big enough to shade out the weeds and grass. Results of an experiment carried out at South Dakota State College show how important clean …

Improving rural health is a teamwork job--one that deserves all the cooperation that state health and education services, communities, organizations, and individuals can give. From the farm family's standpoint, good health is essential to farming success as well as to happy living.

Modern Poultry Housing, Boyd Bonzer, Glenn Hart, Louis Lubinus Mar 1955

Modern Poultry Housing, Boyd Bonzer, Glenn Hart, Louis Lubinus

SDSU Extension Circulars

A MODERN POULTRY HOUSE is an asset to a farm. It need not be expensive to give good results. Often some building already on the farm can be remodeled inexpensively to serve the needs of hens. Where old buildings are not available, new housing should be considered. Remodeling or building new poultry housing is a very important job. In order to invest money wisely, careful attention should be given to planning, choice of materials, arrangement of floor plan and use of labor saving devices. A modern, well organized house can do a lot of the chores for the poultry operator. …

State Hospitals And Schools For The Handicapped, Don Clayton

All of us have a handicap of one kind or another. We may not be crippled in limb or mentally broken, but most of us do have handicaps that reveal themselves every once in a while. Sometimes we harbor prejudices that cause us to suffer extremely "low vision"; some people are subject to spells of "blind rage" while other "limp" socially on a withered sense of inferiority. All of us have areas and moods which find us "stumbling" in a kind of half-world between the real and the unreal.
