The Oncogene Of Avian Sarcoma Virus Ur2 And Its Cellular Homologue: Structure, Sequence And Expression, Wendi S. Neckameyer Jan 1985

The Oncogene Of Avian Sarcoma Virus Ur2 And Its Cellular Homologue: Structure, Sequence And Expression, Wendi S. Neckameyer

Student Theses and Dissertations

Avian sarcoma virus UR2 is a replication-defective virus that can induce sarcomas in vivo and transforms chicken embryo fibroblasts in culture to a characteristic, extremely elongated morphology. The genome of UR2 contains a 1.2 kb transformation-specific sequence, v-ros, which has a homologous counterpart, cros, in normal chicken cellular DNA. The 5' end of v-ros is fused to the helper virus UR2AV-related sequencing coding for one of the viral gag proteins, p19. The fused p19 and ros sequences in UR2 code for a polyprotein of 68 kd, P68gag-ros, which has an associated tyrosine kinase activity. To elucidate the basis …

Cutaneous And Supraspinal Control Of The Axial Muscles In The Rat: Implications For Behavior, Mark Steven Cohen Jan 1985

Cutaneous And Supraspinal Control Of The Axial Muscles In The Rat: Implications For Behavior, Mark Steven Cohen

Student Theses and Dissertations

The axial muscles of the rat are active in a wide variety of behaviors; of special interest is their involvement in sexual behavior. In this research their responses to cutaneous inputs and supraspinal influences were studied. The pudendal nerve (PN), which innervates the skin regions contacted by males during sexual behavior, was stimulated electrically and the responses in the dorsal roots, the lateral longissimus muscle (LL) and its muscle nerves (MN's) were recorded. Conduction velocities in the PN were 54 m/s for the largest A- β fibers and averaged 10 m/s for A-δ fibers. Stimulation (stim) of the PN afferents …

Maternal Behavior In The Rat: Neuroendocrine And Neuroanatomical Substrates, Susan Elizabeth Fahrbach Jan 1985

Maternal Behavior In The Rat: Neuroendocrine And Neuroanatomical Substrates, Susan Elizabeth Fahrbach

Student Theses and Dissertations

A pathway connecting the preoptic region and the ventral midbrain regulates the performance of maternal behavior by female rats. There Is also evidence that the facllltatory action of estrogen on maternal behavior Is mediated via estrogen target cells In the medial preoptic region. Neither the anatomical elements that constitute this functional pathway nor the neuroendocrine events triggered by the estrogenic signal have been defined. The first set of studies described In this thesis (Chapter 2) employed a method combining steroid hormone autoradiography and fluorescent dye retrograde tracing to demonstrate that numerous estradlol-concentrating neurons In the medial preoptic region of the …
