An Analysis Of Marginal Effects Of Land Characteristics And Purchase Factors On Rural Land Values In North Louisiana, Rebecca Summers Mclaren Jan 2004

An Analysis Of Marginal Effects Of Land Characteristics And Purchase Factors On Rural Land Values In North Louisiana, Rebecca Summers Mclaren

LSU Master's Theses

Hedonic models estimate the marginal effect of land characteristics and factors that contribute to a purchase decision on rural land values in submarkets of north Louisiana. While size of tract and mix of land use have expected impacts on rural land values, forces that motivate the buyer also affect price. The natural resource endowment of each of the three submarkets in this study differs significantly from one another. Topography has clearly identifiable impacts on crop selection and income in each submarket. Additionally, the relative location of the submarkets to major metropolitan areas is influential on rural land values in one …

Leptin In Horses: Influences Of Body Condition, Gender, Insulin Insensitivity, Feeding, And Dexamethasone, Joshua Allen Cartmill

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The experiments described herein were designed to answer questions that arose from initially attempting to determine whether treatment with dexamethasone increased concentrations of leptin in geldings. Dexamethasone treatment did in fact increase leptin concentrations in mares, geldings, and stallions. Additional experiments were designed to determine leptin's interaction, not only with the adrenal axis, but with the thyroid axis, the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 axis, as well as glucose and insulin metabolism in geldings, mares, and stallions. During the course of these experiments, differences in leptin concentrations in the horse were attributed to degree of body condition, gender, and feeding time. …

The Control, Survival, And Growth Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Food Products, Richelle Lynn Beverly Jan 2004

The Control, Survival, And Growth Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Food Products, Richelle Lynn Beverly

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Listeria monocytogenes, a ubiquitous foodborne pathogen, was recognized over 70 years ago. It is the source of the human disease listeriosis. The majority of Listeria monocytogenes that have been isolated from food product or human cases are of the serotypes ½ a, ½ b and 4b. Due to the recent outbreaks, recalls and deaths associated with Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat meat products, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on October 2, 2003 issued a directive for the control of Listeria monocytogenes on ready-to-eat products. The ready-to-eat food industry must impose a post-lethality treatment …

The Chick Embryo Amnion As An In Vitro Culture System For Ivf And Nt Embryos, Tonya Renea Davidson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Calving rates are significantly reduced following in vitro production of embryos. Thus, if a technique could be developed that would increase calving rates by as little as one viable offspring, significant research advances could be made. Therefore, in a series of experiments, the efficiency and quality of culturing IVP bovine embryos in the amnion of a domestic chicken egg was tested. In Experiment I, by culturing IVP bovine embryos in the chick amnion (day 4 to 7 of incubation) it was discovered that there was no significant difference in blastocyst rates compared with controls. In Experiment II, it was shown …

The same entomological criteria used in estimating time of death for humans are applicable for deceased wildlife. Necrophilous insects associated with animal carcasses can provide wildlife law enforcement with valuable information necessary for postmortem interval estimation, and ultimately, to incriminate poachers. The purpose of this research was twofold: to establish species composition, faunal succession patterns, and species and life stage interactions of necrophilous insects associated with three wildlife species; and to identify new methods of evaluating succession patterns using statistical measures. Twenty-one large vertebrate carcasses were monitored throughout decomposition in a mixed flatwood forest in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA …

Evaluating International Agricultural Trade In Central America: Three Analyses, Jose Roberto Andino Jan 2004

Evaluating International Agricultural Trade In Central America: Three Analyses, Jose Roberto Andino

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A case study framework was used to study the competitiveness of Honduran coffee with major importing partners, along with an import demand analysis. Several important points summarize the findings. First, trends in green coffee supply and consumption continue to depress world coffee prices, making the production of coffee less attractive. Since small coffee producing countries, like Honduras, cannot affect the international price, they must improve efficiency, productivity, employ cost reduction techniques, and rely on the promotion of specific product attributes to remain competitive. Second, increased market share of Honduran coffee in major importing markets, Germany, Japan, and the U.S. was …

Physicochemical And Functional Properties Of Crawfish Chitosan As Affected By Different Processing Protocols, Sun-Ok Fernandez-Kim

LSU Master's Theses

Chitosan is made from chitin by a chemical process involving demineralization (DM), deproteinization (DP), decolorization (DC), and deacetylation (DA). Very little work has been done to demonstrate the effects of altering or excluding any of the processing steps on chitosan characteristics. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of process modification during chitosan production on the physiochemical and functional properties of crawfish chitosans. Five experimental chitosan samples (DCMPA, DMCPA, DMPCA, DMPAC, DAMPC) prepared with modified processing protocols and the control (DPMCA - traditional chitosan production process) were evaluated and compared with the two commercial crab chitosans. All samples …
