Effects Of Invasion By The Common Reed (Phragmites Australis) On Carbon Transformations In A Great Lakes Marsh, Shawn Trevor Duke Aug 2012

Effects Of Invasion By The Common Reed (Phragmites Australis) On Carbon Transformations In A Great Lakes Marsh, Shawn Trevor Duke

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The common reed (Phragmites australis) is a highly productive invasive grass that alters the wetland physiochemical environment and produces toxic secondary metabolites. Plant litter decomposition, effects of water level on soil microbes, and soil microbial response to leachate additions were investigated in Phragmites invaded and pre-invaded Typha sites. Less litter mass was lost from Phragmites than Typha in both sites during the initial 144 days. Annual mass loss from both species’ litter was greater in the Phragmites site. Lower water levels resulted in greater CO2 than CH4 production in both Phragmites and Typha soils. Higher water …

Influence Of A Short-Term, Multicomponent Intervention On Balance And Strength Among The Elderly, Pamela C. Webert Jun 2012

Influence Of A Short-Term, Multicomponent Intervention On Balance And Strength Among The Elderly, Pamela C. Webert

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Few studies have combined strength and balance training to assess improvement of activities of daily living among subjects over the age of 65. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate how an eight-week balance and strength training program can lead to improvements in activities of daily living among elderly individuals.

Methods: The subjects consisted of 14 elderly women and 3 elderly men who were all residents of an independent living community. There were 10 subjects in the intervention group and 7 subjects in the control group. The intervention group participated in a supervised balance and strength …

Influence Of The Home Environment On Preschoolers’ Dietary Intake In Middle Class Families Enrolled In A Preschool Program In Metropolitan Seattle, Jessica M. Macintyre Apr 2012

Influence Of The Home Environment On Preschoolers’ Dietary Intake In Middle Class Families Enrolled In A Preschool Program In Metropolitan Seattle, Jessica M. Macintyre

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Obesity in the United States has become a major health issue, affecting not only adults, but children as well. The increase among preschool children is of major concern, with 2 out of 10 children in 2008 being overweight or obese. It is important to start obesity prevention at a young age in order to avoid the development of obesity and its detrimental health conditions. Children begin to develop eating habits at a young age, and the home eating environment may have an influence on the development of eating habits.
Purpose:
To assess the influence of both a positive and …

Effects Of Road Salt On Photosynthetic And Enzyme Activity Of Stream Biofilms, Leah Cook Feb 2012

Effects Of Road Salt On Photosynthetic And Enzyme Activity Of Stream Biofilms, Leah Cook

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Road salt application and salt-laden run-off are common, yet little information exists about its influence on periphyton. I measured extracelluar enzyme activity and photosynthetic activity of natural winter stream periphyton communities under various short-term laboratory salt exposures. The results of this study suggest that short-term exposure to increased concentrations of salt did not affect extracelluar enzyme activity but could temporarily reduce the photosynthetic activity of the periphyton. Further work will be necessary to understand the longterm effects of increased salt concentrations on periphyton and extracellular enzyme activity.

The Molecular And Behavioral Characterization Of Cav1.3 Over-Expressing Mice, Jamie Nicole Slater Jan 2012

The Molecular And Behavioral Characterization Of Cav1.3 Over-Expressing Mice, Jamie Nicole Slater

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Age-related cognitive decline refers to the memory impairment and difficulty learning new tasks that occurs during the normal process of aging. There are many possible changes that occur at the neuronal level that could account for age-related cognitive decline. One hypothesis suggests that a dysregulation of neuronal intracellular calcium concentration contributes to age-related cognitive deficits. Previous research suggests that an increase in neuronal L-type voltage-gated calcium channels (LVGCCs) occurs in the brain during aging. This increase could account for altered intracellular calcium concentration and lead to agerelated cognitive decline. A line of transgenic mice that over-express the LVGCC CaV …

Activity And Diet Of Bats In Apple Orchards Of Southern Michigan, Brenna Lynn Smith Jan 2012

Activity And Diet Of Bats In Apple Orchards Of Southern Michigan, Brenna Lynn Smith

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

I studied activity and diet of bats in apple orchards in southern Michigan. There was no difference between organic and conventional orchards in number and composition of insects captured with light traps, number of bats captured with mist nets, or number of acoustic files of bat activity that were recorded. The majority of insects captured were Coleptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, and Trichoptera. Only two species of bats were caught: big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) and eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis). Most calls were produced by big brown bats, followed by hoary bats (L. cinereus), red …

Characterization Of The Expression Patterns Of Cellulose Synthase-Like A (Csla) Genes In Arabidopsis Thaliana Using Reporter Promoter-Fusions And Immunolocalization, Mary Skinner Jan 2012

Characterization Of The Expression Patterns Of Cellulose Synthase-Like A (Csla) Genes In Arabidopsis Thaliana Using Reporter Promoter-Fusions And Immunolocalization, Mary Skinner

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Plant cell walls are the most abundant source of renewable biomass on Earth. Cell wall carbohydrates have many practical applications (e.g., forage, building materials, biofuels, textiles, paper, etc.), and within plants they contribute to structure, provide defense, and facilitate cellular communication. This study is focused on the CELLULOSE SYNTHASELIKE A (CSLA) family, members of which have been implicated in the synthesis of the backbone of mannan polysaccharides in plant cell walls. The Arabidopsis genome contains nine CSLA genes and we hypothesize that there is some degree of functional redundancy among these genes. A detailed investigation of transgenic Arabidopsis plants harboring …
