C. Jayne Brahler

Study design: A randomized double blind repeated measures, case series study of whole body vibration (WBV) in the assisted living elderly.

Background: A single exposure to WBV has been shown to have benefit with respect to muscle activity, strength, balance, and power in some studies while other studies have found no benefit. Its overall effectiveness is unknown due to the conflicting findings reported in the literature.

Case description: Six subjects (5 female, 1 male; mean age = 85.4) in an assisted living community volunteered to participate. Subjects were exposed to a single bout of WBV at 0, 2, 20, and …

Influence Of Catchment Land Cover On Stoichiometry And Stable Isotope Compositions Of Basal Resources And Macroinvertebrate Consumers In Headwater Streams, Joseph Milanovich, Adam Berland, Matthew Hopton Dec 2015

Influence Of Catchment Land Cover On Stoichiometry And Stable Isotope Compositions Of Basal Resources And Macroinvertebrate Consumers In Headwater Streams, Joseph Milanovich, Adam Berland, Matthew Hopton

Joseph Milanovich

Anthropogenic land use affects aquatic landscapes. For example, landscape-level conversion to urban or agricultural land can heavily influence nutrient cycles in headwater streams via increased nutrient loading and altered hydrologic patterns. Recent studies in headwater streams have found that the stoichiometry and stable isotope compositions of basal resources and consumers can vary as a result of landscape-level change. To this end, we examined the stoichiometry and stable isotope compositions (δ13C and δ15N) of headwater stream flora and fauna in 16 streams located within forested, agricultural, urban, and mixed (urban, forested, and agricultural) catchments. Our results suggest …

Informal Care Vs. Formal Services: Changes In Patterns Of Care Over Time, S Tennstedt, B Harrow, Sybil L. Crawford Dec 2015

Informal Care Vs. Formal Services: Changes In Patterns Of Care Over Time, S Tennstedt, B Harrow, Sybil L. Crawford

Sybil L. Crawford

Longitudinal data from a representative sample of community-residing older persons were used to document changes in patterns and costs of care, both informal and formal. It was found that use of formal services was usually in conjunction with, and secondary to, informal care. Limited availability of informal care as well as increased disability raised the odds of using services. Substitution of formal services for informal care was limited and usually temporary. Total costs of community care, including living expenses, were generally less than the cost of nursing home care.

Our Chemical Selves : Gender, Toxics, And Environmental Health, Dayna Scott

Dayna N. Scott

Everyday exposures to chemicals found in homes, schools, and workplaces are having devastating consequences on human health. These toxic exposures derive from common personal care products and cosmetics, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals, furniture, the food we eat, the water we drink, and even the air we breathe. Our Chemical Selves examines the impact of toxics on the long-term health of Canadians. Written by leading researchers in science, law, and public policy, the chapters in this collection reveal that while exposures to chemicals are pervasive and widespread, people from low-income, racialized, and Indigenous communities face a far greater risk of exposure. At …
