Determining The Functions Of Novel Genes Required For Photosynthesis, Gillian Gomer, Moshe Kafri, Martin Jonikas Jul 2019

Determining The Functions Of Novel Genes Required For Photosynthesis, Gillian Gomer, Moshe Kafri, Martin Jonikas

Gillian Gomer

As land available for agriculture remains limited, it is becoming more necessary to explore methods to improve the efficiency of crop production in order to support Earth’s growing populations. Newly characterized photosynthetic genes could improve our understanding of the way organisms convert light energy into fuel, allowing improvements in plant growth and environmental resistance. Using an insertion mutant library of the unicellular algae, Chlamydomonas reindhartii, that covers 83% of its genome, we are identifying and characterizing the hundreds of genes associated with photosynthesis. Chlamydomonas can be grown with or without a light source, which allows us to identify mutants displaying …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Silica Hydride-Based Stationary Phases For Bioanalytical Application, Seiichiro Watanabe May 2019

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Silica Hydride-Based Stationary Phases For Bioanalytical Application, Seiichiro Watanabe

Seiichiro Watanabe

Most HPLC columns are packed with silanol-rich (Si-OH) type-B silica material that often participates in undesired electrostatic interactions with the analyte solutes and produces poor peak shape [1,2]. These silanols are also known to facilitate surface hydration necessary for HILIC retention mode for polar analyte molecules. However, the hydrated surface composition can easily fluctuate, and thus results in a poor reproducibility and requires lengthy equilibration step. In this study, four novel stationary phases have been developed by using the TYPE-CTM Silica Hydride material, which has replaced up to 95% of the surface silanols with silicon-hydride (Si-H) groups. One of the …

Growing The Zombie Ant Fungus In The Lab: Optimizing Conditions For Stalk Formation In Host And Culturing In Media, Brianna Santamaria Apr 2018

Growing The Zombie Ant Fungus In The Lab: Optimizing Conditions For Stalk Formation In Host And Culturing In Media, Brianna Santamaria

Brianna Santamaria

Ophiocordyceps unilateralis is a parasitic fungus that can manipulate the behavior of Carpenter ants. The fungus causes the ant to bite down onto some type of vegetation until it eventually dies there. Once dead, the fungus grows a stock with a fruiting body from the base of the ant’s head. The fungus then releases its spores to infect other ants. The goal of the Zombie Ant Laboratory is to study how Ophicordyceps unilateralis manipulates Carpenter ant behavior on a molecular level. To research this, it is important to observe it in its natural habitat and in a laboratory setting; the …

Clostridium difficile infects and kills 30,000-40,000 people a year in the United States. In order to target and minimize the spread of C. difficile we are screening puupehenone, a natural marine product that is excreted from some species of sponges and coral as a defense mechanism, and repurposing its role for medical use. Our research primarily focuses on determining puupehenone’s antimicrobial properties. This was determined by testing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of puupehenone as it relates to a single strain of C. difficile, and then observing whether the antimicrobial properties hold across multiple strains of the bacterium. The strain …

Quantification And Impacts Of Nautical Traffic On Hawksbill Presence In A Honduran Marine Protected Area: A Progress Report, Stephen G. Dunbar Dec 2016

Quantification And Impacts Of Nautical Traffic On Hawksbill Presence In A Honduran Marine Protected Area: A Progress Report, Stephen G. Dunbar

Stephen Dunbar, PhD

Marine protected areas (MPAs) have been implemented to help reduce negative impacts of human activities on marine organisms. However, many MPAs overlook specific threats, such as nautical traffic. Boat presence has been shown to alter typical activity patterns, increase stress, and lead to physical injury in marine animals. The Sandy Bay West End Marine Reserve (SBWEMR) was implemented to protect the northwestern shore and marine environments of Roatán, Honduras, and the organisms that inhabit them, including the hawksbill sea turtle. However, there are many dive centers, hotels, and marinas in the SBWEMR, almost all of which generate boat traffic. To …

Sound And The Moving Image:Critical Characteristics For Spectator Response, Kara Rader, Rafeeq I. Roberts, Matt Egizii, Jeffery Allen Sep 2014

Sound And The Moving Image:Critical Characteristics For Spectator Response, Kara Rader, Rafeeq I. Roberts, Matt Egizii, Jeffery Allen

Rafeeq I Roberts

The prevailing wisdom in the film and video production industries is that audio information outweighs visual information when it comes to spectator responses, but there are few empirical studies to support this claim. In previous research, four critical characteristics of sound have been identified: (1) Music, (2) visual/sound contradictions (defined as sound that is inconsistent with audience expectations based on visual information), (3) multi-channel sound, and (4) sound quality. Building on our previous research into music and film, we have found that many researchers have looked into the question of how music affects emotions (Eschrich et al., 2008; Have, 2008; …

For well over a century, American biologists have built collection of plants, animals, fungi, insects, and other natural materials. Often, these collections serve as a record of the unique biodiversity of the local area and provide a record of change over time. Many taxonomic, genetic, and environmental discoveries lay waiting in the drawers and cupboards in which these specimens are stored. / / Uploading images of natural history specimens to Digital Commons allows them to be easily discovered in with a web search, leading the user back to the home collection. As an example, a search for 'big leaf magnolia …

Now That You Have Created A Great Video, How Do You Know If Anyone Is Learning From It?, Claudia J. Dold

Claudia J. Dold

Video offers a wide range of benefits a useful teaching tool, and librarians are using it to make all kinds of information available. I have created two series of videos at my university library concerning library and research skills: one for undergraduates and the other for graduates. This past year, I undertook four studies to determine whether students use the videos and under what circumstances.

Requirements Of Rab5 Activity In Highly Invasive Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Nicole Porther, M Alejandro Barbieri Dec 2013

Requirements Of Rab5 Activity In Highly Invasive Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Nicole Porther, M Alejandro Barbieri

Nicole Porther

Rab5 expression in cancer has been associated with the disease progression and prognosis. We have previously shown that growth factor-directed cell invasion and migration was dependent on Rab5 activation in non-invasive breast cancer cells. However, hardly any data is available regarding the role of Rab5 in invasive cells in the presence of growth factor.  In our present study, we report that the invasive and migratory properties of the highly invasive breast cancer cell line, MDAMB-231, were abrogated in cells expressing the inactive (GDP-bound) form of Rab5 irrespective of growth factor stimulation; while the invasive potential of breast cancer cell lines …

Assessing Tissue Characterization Of Abdominal Organs Using Fuzzy C-Means Cluster Analysis Of Color- Fusion Mr Images, Terrance D. Weeden, H. Keith Brown Apr 2013

Assessing Tissue Characterization Of Abdominal Organs Using Fuzzy C-Means Cluster Analysis Of Color- Fusion Mr Images, Terrance D. Weeden, H. Keith Brown

Terrance Weeden

Color fusion MRI is being investigated for its value in automatic segmentation of tissues. An existing color fusion MRI data set of the liver, pancreas, and kidney of a normal male volunteer was analyzed both visually and statistically. Automatic tissue segmentation can allow better differentiation of abdominal pathologies, as well as pathologies associated with other organs. My research hypothesis is that fuzzy c-means clustering can be used to quantify the confidence levels of the correct classification of renal, pancreatic, and hepatic tissues visualized by the color fusion MRI method. Results from data show that fuzzy c-means clustering can be used …
