Species of the Ceranisus thrips-attacking genus are difficult to distinguish morphologically. The phylogenetic relationships within the Ceranisus species were explored using nucleotide sequences of the 28S D2 expansion region of the rDNA gene. Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and parsimony inference methods were employed to construct the phylogenetic relationships. Principal component analysis on the Turkish species of Ceranisus, namely antalyacus, menes, bozovaensis, hirsutus, planitianus (a new record for Turkey), pacuvius, and a new species, provided supporting evidence. All known data concerning hosts and geographical distribution are presented. A new species, C. onuri O. Doganlar, sp.n., was described from Turkey.

A new species belonging to the genus Helochares Mulsant, 1844 (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) is described on the basis of a single male specimen collected in Ordu province, Turkey. The species is described and an identification key to the species of the Helochares lividus group is provided. In addition, Helochares pallens MacLeay, 1825 and Hydrobius convexus Brullé, 1835 are recorded in Turkey for the first time.

Ninety-one eastern spadefoot toads, Pelobates syriacus, were collected from 3 localities in Turkey between 1993 and 2003 and examined for helminths. One species of Monogenea (Polystoma sp.) and 3 species of Nematoda (Aplectana brumpti, Oxysomatium brevicaudatum, Skrjabinelazia taurica) were found. Pelobates syriacus represents a new host record for Polystoma sp. and S. taurica.

The occurrence of epizoic ciliates on the juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus L., 1758, collected monthly by fishing net in Sinop's Sarıkum Lagoon Lake during the period from May 2003 to April 2004, was investigated. Five epizoic ciliate species, Trichodina jadranica (Raabe, 1958) Haider, 1964; Trichodina domerguei Wallengren, 1897; Riboscyphidia sp.; Ambiphrya sp.; and Vorticella sp., were found after examination of 296 juvenile flounder. Among these, T. jadranica was the dominant species. Abraxas pantaria (L.) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), the spotted ash looper (Light Magpie), is recognized as a new pest of common ash, Fraxinus excelsior (L.) in the eastern part of Turkey. Description of different developmental stages of A. pantaria is given. Its development, biology, damage, and parasitoids were studied in the field (Aras Valley, Karakurt, Sarıkamış, Kars Province) and partly in the laboratory during 2004-2006. Around the beginning of the 1990s, these islands were designated as a marine and terrestrial reserve, mainly for the protection of the Farasan gazelle, which is the only wild ungulate present on the archipelago. A study of the anomuran crustaceans found in Fethiye Bay, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, revealed 22 species belonging to 4 families (Diogenidae, Paguridae, Galathaeidae, and Porcellanidae). Possibilities for the management of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) on stored products using coloured lighting systems was assessed in this study. Adult beetles were exposed in a choice chamber to red, blue, green, and clear tungsten light. T. castaneum adults preferred tungsten, blue, and green lights, and avoided red light. For each colour, beetles were separately reared for 3 generations. Beetles preferred the colour in which they were reared, except for red, which was avoided even by the beetles reared in a red-coloured environment for 3 generations under duress. The Effect Of Caloric Restriction On The Population Density Of Freshwater Rotifers (Brachionus Calyciflorus), Ni̇lgün Özdemi̇r, Abdulkadi̇r Çi̇ltaş

The effects of caloric restriction (CR) on the population density of freshwater rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) were investigated in the present study. During experiments with different CRs, groups of rotifers were fed with Chlorella sp. at the same concentrations of 1.5 × 10^6 cells/mL at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 h intervals for 20 days. Significant changes were observed both in the population density and the peak days in groups subjected to different CRs (P < 0.01). The highest peak in population density was obtained on the fifth day for rotifers fed in 12 h intervals (269 ± 40.12 individuals/mL, mean ± SD). The rate of population increase (r) varied from 0.608 ± 0.073 to 0.288 ± 0.053, depending on the feeding intervals. The results show that CR affected the population density of B. calyciflorus.

This study aims to provide information about the population structure of Mauremys rivulata at the ancient Claros site near Selçuk, in İzmir province. To achieve this goal, a total of 120 turtles (27 males, 70 females, 23 juveniles) were marked and 33 turtles were recaptured between May 2004 and April 2005. Of these recaptured turtles, 20 were female (60.6%), 9 were male (27.3%), and 4 were juveniles (12.1%). The average population size was estimated at 217. This corresponds to 434 individuals/ha. The mean body mass was 189 ± 147.5 g, which corresponds to a mean body mass of 82 kg/ha. …

This study determined the seasonal dynamics and spatial distribution of the monogenean parasite Dactylogyrus crucifer on the gills of roach Rutilus rutilus from Lake Sapanca, Turkey. A total of 183 specimens of roach between January and November 2005 were examined in monthly intervals. The highest mean intensity was recorded in March (227.1 ± 87.14) and the lowest in November (13.3 ± 8.2). Fifty three R. rutilus specimens were therefore investigated for spatial distribution of D. crucifer in March 2006. No significant differences in distribution were found according to any of the spatial determinants.

Parasitism of lepidopteran larvae by braconid wasps has significant effects on host hemolymph proteins and the physiology of the host insect. In this study the post-parasitism effects of a gregarious idiobiont ectoparasitoid (Bracon hebetor) on hemolymph plasma proteins in the final instar larvae of the host (Ephestia kuehniella) were investigated. Hemolymph plasma proteins were analyzed using spectrophotometry and sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Mesopotamian spiny eels, Mastacembelus mastacembelus (Banks & Solender, 1794), were collected from a large dam lake located on the Euphrates River in order to determine the most reliable ageing method among different hard structures and to estimate growth parameters. Vertebra, otolith, and opercle series were removed from 195 individuals. Vertebrae displayed the most interpretable annulus formations. Total length ranged from 14.4 cm to 76.9 cm and total weight ranged from 6.0 g to 950.0 g. The length and weight frequency distribution was significantly different between the 2 sexes (K-S test, P < 0.001). The length-weight relationship, determined as W = 0.004TL^{2.84} (r = 0.98), revealed no sex-based significant difference (GLM, P > 0.05). Age classes ranged from 1 to 21 years …

Phylum Rotifera consists of aquatic, microscopic invertebrates inhabiting the freshwaters of the world. We report on some rotifers from the littoral zone of a pond in the University of Pune, Pune (India) (18^{°}33^'16^{"}N, 73^{°}49^´28^{"}E). A total of 13 rotifers species were found, including 5 new records to the Maharashtra state. Ptygura pedunculata (Edmondson, 1939) is reported for the first time from India and the Oriental region.

Nine aphid species from the Ondokuz Mayıs University Kurupelit campus in Samsun province, Turkey, were determined as new records for the Turkish fauna. These species were Aphis helianthi Monell in Riley & Monell, 1879; Macrosiphum impatientis (Williams, 1911); Macrosiphum mordvilkoi Miyazaki, 1968; Macrosiphum pallidum (Oestlunt, 1887); Uroleucon pseudoambrosiae (Olive, 1963); Cinara maghrebica Mimeur, 1934; Cinara wahluca Hottes, 1952; Stomaphis cupressi (Pintera, 1965); and Maculolachnus submacula (Walker, 1848).

A total of 41 freshwater ostracod species belonging to 21 genera was collected from 144 different aquatic bodies in the Bolu region during the summer of 2006. The genus Schellencandona and 12 species (Candona weltneri, C. sanociensis, C. lactea, Fabaeformiscandona cf. breuili, F. balatonica, F. brevicornis, F. protzi, F. latens, Schellencandona cf. belgica, Pseudocandona cf. semicognita, Potamocypris similis, and P. smaragdina) are new for the Turkish Ostracoda fauna. The ecological characteristics of ostracods in Lake Sünnet were monitored monthly between May 2005 and September 2007; 9 living and 5 subfossil ostracod taxa were recorded. Among the species, Ilyocypris getica was reported in Turkey for the first time, while Stenocypria fischeri was found for the second time in the country in 55 years. The most abundant species, Limnocythere inopinata, was collected in dry and wet months, while I. bradyi was the only species found in only the wet months. Investigations of the inland water bodies of southeast Azerbaijan (mainly near the city of Lenkoran and its suburbs) yielded 11 additional species of freshwater testate amoebae. Among these, 7 species (Oopyxis lenkoranica sp.n., Pentagonia azerbaijanica sp.n., Difflugia lenkoranica sp.n., D.talyshica sp.n., D.sapnakeranica sp.n., D.pressula sp.n., and D.girkanica sp.n.) are new to science. Descriptions of all 11 species are given.

Scaldfish (Arnoglossus laterna) (n = 1892) were caught in İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea) from January 2005 to December 2006. Total length and weight of all specimens ranged from 3.9 to 16.0 cm and from 0.47 to 41.63 g, respectively. The overall ratio of females to males was 1:1.91. The Caspian Sea forms the southern limit of the distribution range of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), but little is known about its life history in this area. A total of 362 specimens were collected from the Gomishan wetland (southeast Caspian Sea, Iran) to describe the stickleback's life history characteristics. Samples were taken monthly between February and July of 2008. The maximum ages of the population observed were 2+ years for males and 3+ years for females. The species of Gugolzia (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Pteromalidae) in Europe and Turkey were reviewed, and an identification key for differentiating the species is provided. Newly discovered diagnostic characters of the genus were added to the diagnoses given by earlier authors. Species were recorded as parasitoids of phytophagous Eurytomidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea). New host and distributions are for Gugolzia harmolitae, which was reared from Tetramesa romana feeding on shoots of Arundo donax (Poaceae), Gugolzia karadagae n.sp. from Eurytoma plotnikovi feeding on fruits of Pistacia vera together with Megastigmus pistaciae (Chalcidoidea: Torymidae) in Gaziantep province, and Gugolzia melengicia n.sp. from fruits of Pistacia terebinthi …

Grandidierella trispinosa sp. nov., the first species of the genus Grandidierella Coutiére, 1904 from Pakistan, is described from specimens collected at Sandspit backwater, west of Karachi. The new species is illustrated and compared with allied species. The holotype is housed in the Marine Reference Collection and Resource Centre, University of Karachi.

Age, growth, length-weight relationship and reproduction were investigated for striped seabream (Lithognathus mormyrus L., 1758) collected from Beymelek Lagoon (Antalya, Turkey) between February 2006 and January 2007. The ages of striped seabream ranged from 0 to 3 years for males and from 0 to 4 years for females. Their total lengths and weights ranged between 14.4 and 26.4 cm and 42 and 297 g for males and 14.3 and 27.4 cm and 40 and 329 g for females, respectively. Agathis berkei sp. n. (Hym., Braconidae, Agathidinae) is described from Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Morphological diagnostic characters of the new species are figured, and they are compared with those of the related species Agathis fischeri Zettel and Beyarslan, 1992.

Nine Tachinidae species were recorded for the first time in Turkey. These are Medina melania (Meigen), Acemya acuticornis (Meigen), Allophorocera ferruginea (Meigen), Graphogaster vestita Rondani, Phasia pandellei (Dupuis), Xysta holosericea (Fabricius), Leucostoma tetraptera (Meigen), Cylindromyia interrupta (Meigen), and Besseria lateritia (Meigen).
