Occurrence Of The Alien Species Aspidosiphon (Aspidosiphon) Elegans (Sipuncula) On The Levantine And Aegean Coasts Of Turkey, Şermi̇n Açik

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A total of 37 specimens of Aspidosiphon (Aspidosiphon) elegans were collected at 5 stations located along the Levantine coast of Turkey and at 1 station located near Foça (Aegean Sea). This species inhabited calcareous rocks, the mussel Branchidontes pharaonis, and the alga Corallina mediterranea between 0 and 3 m depths. The population density of this species in the area was found to be 25 ind. M^{-2}. As Aspidosiphon (A.) elegans is a bio-eroder species, its high population density may cause serious damage to coralligenous habitats. First Record Of The Eucalyptus Seed Gall Wasp, Quadrastichodella Nova Girault, 1922, (Eulophidae: Tetrastichinae) From Turkey, Oğuzhan Doğanlar, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar

The present study was carried out during 2006 and 2007 in a eucalyptus planted area in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The eulophid species Quadrastichodella nova Girault (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae: Tetrastichinae) was collected on Eucalyptus spp. seed capsules for the first time in Turkey. This species induces galls on the seeds, attaining low levels of infestation. The plant species Eucalyptus camaldulensis L. (Myrtaceae) is reported as new host for Q. nova.

This study was based on 57 beech marten (Martes foina) specimens collected in Turkey between 1994 and 1998. The specimens were divided into 3 age classes as young, juvenile, and adult on the basis of the morphology of the sagittal and lambdoidal crests, and temporal ridges, relative lengths of the interorbital and postorbital constrictions, the degree of wear in molar and canine teeth, baculum weight and structure, pelage color, cranial and bacular measurements, and field notes concerning sexual maturity and lactation. In this study, 510 samples of Capoeta trutta living in Karakaya Dam Lake were studied. After determining sex distribution, size (length and weight), growth rates, and growth conditions factors of 210 C. trutta specimens were examined. The number of female and male specimens was 104 and 106, respectively. The age of females and males ranged between 1-7 and 0-7 years, respectively. The age-length, age-weight, and length-weight curves were constructed. The authors investigated the occurrence of fungi and fungus-like organisms (chromistan organisms) growing on dead Moina macrocopa specimens in 3 bodies of water of varied trophicity. Dead specimens of the crustacean Moina macrocopa, fish feed in aquaculture in countries of the Mediterranean basin, were used as bait. In all, 55 species were identified on the Moina macrocopa specimens, including 42 chromistan organisms and 13 fungus species. Of the 42 chromistan organisms, 13 are known as parasites or necrotrophs of fish species. Some specimens of Torymidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) were collected in Turkey, one of which belongs to Idarnotorymus Masi, 1916 (Torymidae: Toryminae) as a new species, I. burdurensis, and is described from Burdur province. The diagnostic characters of the genus and the new species are reviewed, and photographs and line drawings of I. burdurensis are presented.

Nilotonia (Manotonia) tegulata (Viets 1951), known previously from Africa and Italy, is new for the Turkish fauna. The morphological features are compared with similar species, and an identification key for subgenera of the genus Nilotonia is given. The subgenus Manotonia is also reported for the first time from Turkey.

The biology, nymphal stages, and life habits of the endemic dune cricket Schizodactylus inexpectatus (Werner, 1901) (Orthoptera: Schizodactylidae) were investigated in this study carried out between 2000 and 2007 in the Çukurova delta (Adana province) and in Alata (Mersin province), Turkey. The study showed that S. inexpectatus, which is a nocturnal insect, passes through 9 nymphal stages, each characterised by its own body size. The present study showed that certain properties of burrows, such as their depths, do not depend on either adult or immature stages of the insect. Sardine (Sardina pilchardus) is one of the most important species among Turkish fisheries and is broadly distributed along its coastal waters. In the present study, mitochondrial DNA sequences from the cytochrome b (cytb) gene were examined to assess the genetic diversity of sardines inhabiting Turkish coastal waters. A fragment of sardine cytb DNA from each sample collected from 8 representative regions along the coastal zones was amplified by PCR analysis and subsequently sequenced. The distribution, secondary production, and calcium:tissue (Ca:tissue) ratio in relation to limno-chemical factors were studied in a freshwater limpet (Septaria lineata) population from the west bank of the River Hooghly, West Bengal, India, for 2 successive years. Total hardness, chloride, pH, and phosphate were shown to be significant in Pearson´s correlations in influencing the abundance of the limpet population. Annual production for the 2 successive years was 10.3 g m^{-2} and 9.5 g m^{-2}, respectively. Shape differences were analyzed in cultured and lagoon (Homa Lagoon in İzmir Bay, Turkey; 38°33´23´N-26°50´42´E) caught sea bream, Sparus aurata. Specimens in group A (n = 35, 19.71 ± 1.43 cm TL) were collected from nature, while cultured fish in group B (n = 32, 15.12 ± 0.44 cm TL) were propagated in a private hatchery. Characterization Of Branchial Na,K-Atpase From Three Freshwater Fish Species (Oreochromis Niloticus, Cyprinus Carpio, And Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Gülüzar Atli, Mustafa Canli

Branchial Na,K-ATPase activity was characterized in 3 freshwater fish species (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Oreochromis niloticus, and Cyprinus carpio) with different ecological needs. Na^{+}, K^{+}, and Cl^{-} concentrations in the gills were also measured. The maximal Na,K-ATPase activity was observed at 100 mM Na^{+}, 20-40 mM K^{+}, 3-4 mM Mg^{2+}, and 1 mM ouabain. The maximal velocity (Vmax) of Na,K-ATPase isolated from O. mykiss (1.07 µmol Pi/mg prot/h) was lower than that isolated from O. niloticus (7.25 µmol Pi/mg prot/h) and C. carpio (7.44 µmol Pi/mg prot/h). A total of 1527 of poor cod (Trisopterus minutus Linn., 1758) were collected by trawl hauls between April 2001 and March 2002 from İzmir Bay (central Aegean Sea). The size of the fish (total length) ranged from 10.6 cm (minimum, September) and 24.8 cm (April). The population was composed of 53% males, 41% females, and 6% immature individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:1.3. The age composition of the samples was from I to V. Dorcatherium majus is one of the 4 Asian species of Dorcatherium found in the Siwaliks of Pakistan. Many fossiliferous sites in the Lower and Middle Siwaliks of Pakistan (Middle and Late Miocene) were visited in the last 14 years and many specimens of D. majus were found. Some specimens are well preserved and some are in a poor state of preservation. Among the collected specimens, 8 were included in this study due to their good preservation. All the selected specimens belong to the lower dentition of D. majus and document intraspecific size variation.

Effects Of Cadmium Compounds (Cadmium Para Hydroxybenzoate And Cadmium Chloride) On The Liver Of Mature Mice, Yusuf Ersan, İsmai̇l Ari, Evren Koç

In this study, 4 experimental groups and 1 control group containing adult mice (Mus musculus var. albinos) were used to examine the effects of 2 different cadmium compounds, namely cadmium para hydroxybenzoate, which was newly synthesized, and cadmium chloride on the liver of mice. In various test concentrations, both cadmium compounds were intraperitoneally injected into adult mice every day for 15 days. With standard histological techniques samples were obtained from the livers of the mice. Slides were prepared and examined with light microscopy (Nikon Eclipse E600) and histopathological structures were observed.

In this study, the nesting site characteristics and nest densities of ardeids (grey heron: Ardea cinerea; night heron: Nycticorax nycticorax, and little egret: Egretta garzetta) were investigated in Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary. It was found that the site of breeding colony had 166 trees consisting of willows (92) and poplars (74); 105 of which (63 willow and 42 poplar) were found occupied by ardeid nests. Embryonic Mortality In Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta Caretta) Nests: A Comparative Study On Fethiye And Göksu Delta Beaches, Adem Özdemi̇r, Oğuz Türkozan, Özgür Güçlü

In total, 66 loggerhead turtle nests were examined and compared in terms of embryonic mortality during the 2004 and 2005 breeding seasons on Fethiye and Göksu Delta beaches. In all, 5012 eggs were counted, 2751 (54.90%) of which hatched successfully. Of the 2261 unhatched eggs, 68 (1.35%) were classified as unidentified eggs and 2193 (43.75%) were classified as containing dead embryos. Of these dead embryos, a high percentage were in the early stage (n = 1177, 23.48%) and late stage (n = 814, 16.24%,) of development. Totally 189 poor cod (Trisopterus minutus Linn., 1758) specimens were collected by trawling in the central Aegean Sea between April 2001 and March 2002. The relationship of the otolith length and weight with the age of poor cod was investigated, as the age determination is relatively difficult by otolith readings. The karyotypes of 2 bat species from Iran were examined. The diploid number of chromosomes (2n) and the fundamental numbers of chromosomal arms (NFa) were determined to be 2n = 44 and NFa = 54 for Myotis blythii and 2n = 46 and NFa = 50 for Miniopterus schreibersii, respectively. The karyotypes of Iranian bats show similarity within populations in other countries with respect to the diploid chromosome numbers; however, they are quite different in the fundamental chromosome numbers and the numbers of autosomal arms.

Aspects of the ecology, karyology, and taxonomic status of the Egyptian fruit bat, Rousettus aegyptiacus, in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated based on 41 specimens obtained between 1977 and 2003. Distribution, external and cranial morphometrics, pelage coloration, baculum morphology, karyology, colony size, roosting and feeding ecology, and conservation and management issues were recorded. The fruit bat in Turkey is represented by the nominate subspecies, R. a. aegyptiacus. Sexual dimorphism was recorded in pelage coloration and morphometric data. In all, 27 species from 17 genera belonging to 9 families were identified, 9 of which (Coenagrion scitulum, Ischnura elegans ebneri, Aeshna affinis, Aeshna isosceles antehumeralis, Anax parthenope, Hemianax ephippiger, Libellula depressa, Libellula fulva, and Orthetrum brunneum) are new records for the Odonata fauna of Samsun. This study includes faunistic and distributional records of the 27 species.

The Greater Noctule, Nyctalus lasiopterus, was recorded from southwestern Turkey for the third time. The dorsal fur of the Greater Noctule, which also covers the underpart of the wing membrane, along with the forearm and propatagium, is uniformly dark brown. The cranium shows typical characteristics of the noctule bats. In addition to these, the exoccipital is convex and is markedly visible in the planar view of the skull. The present study provides data on the abundance of syntopic southern crested newts, Triturus karelinii, and banded newts, Triturus vittatus, in Uludağ National Park. The population of T. karelinii was 275 ± 60.9 (95% CI = 138-413) in Kirazlıyayla and 424 ± 85.6 (95% CI = 212-636) in Sarıalan. The populations of T. vittatus in Kirazlıyayla and Sarıalan were 392 ± 85.6 (95% CI = 196-588) and 158 ± 37.9 (95% CI = 79-237), respectively. Diet Composition Of The Pharaoh Eagle Owl, Bubo Ascalaphus, In Azraq Nature Reserve, Jordan, Adwan Hussien Shehab, Michal Ciach

Pellets of the Pharaoh Eagle Owl Bubo ascalaphus were collected from Azraq Nature Reserve in the Eastern Desert of Jordan. Analysis of the content of the owl pellets yielded the remains of 107 individuals of prey representing 15 different species. Based on the numbers of individual prey items, 13.1% was represented by 3 insectivores (Hemiechinus aff. auritus, Crocidura suaveolens, and Suncus etruscus) and 73.8% by 4 rodents (Mus aff. musculus, Meriones libycus, Gerbillus nanus, and Jaculus jaculus).
