Annual Medicago Ecotypes From North West Libya, M Khalil, C M. Francis, N J. Trotman
Technical Bulletins
Nine Medicago species were represented in collections from 10 sites in North West Libya. This report outlines species distribution, maturity characteristics and coumestrol content of the ecotypes collected. Medicago laciniata was the most common species collected but there appeared to be a relationship to soil type amongst other species. M. truncatula predominated on heavier textured soils but M. tornata and M. littoralis were more frequent on sandy soils. The Libyan ecotypes were typically early flowering with a rapid rate of burr maturation. They contained low to moderate levels of the plant oestrogen coumestrol in dry stems. Evaluation work was carried …

Longevity Of Doublegee Seed Under Continuous Pasture, D J. Gilbey
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Locality: Avondale, Wongan Hills and Chapman Research Stations. Background. Since 1974 pegged areas on the three research stations have been under continuous pasture and have been sampled annually to study the fate of the viable doublegee seed population. Each site was sprayed for doublegee control in the growing season before the first samples were taken in late summer of 73/74. The sites were again sprayed in the 1974 growing season except for Wongan Hills. The Wongan Hills site was cropped in 1976 and no further data is available. 74C7, 75WH65, 75WH66, 76AL11, 76C9, 76C6, 77C3, 77GE9, 77LC26, 77ME28, 77M028, 77N034, …

Rates of Nitrogen on Wheat, Oats and Barley - Soil Test. In this, the third year of this programme, 44 sites were selected and soil sampled during February - March. Thirty seven of these trials consisted of four replications on wheat only and the other seven consisted of three replications on wheat, oats and barley. All reps were soil sampled separately. In each rep. of the 37 trials, 20 samples were taken to 10 cm depth with pogo stick samplers. In the. other seven trials 50 samples per rep. were taken. In addition, from three holes at random across each …

Cereal Foliage Disease Survey, T N. Khan, A. G. P. Brown
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Cereal Foliage Disease Survey A dry season reduced disease to insignificant levels (as measured by this survey) in all areas except the south west. Late rains may have produced some damage to wheat by S. nodorum however but this was probably confined to southern areas. In barley net blotch which has been declining re appeared a major disease in 1977 excepting high rainfall areas, where scald continued to be severe. The level of scald infection was considerably lower which may be associated with relatively higher temperatures and low rainfall. Variety Clipper continued to show high degree of tolerance to net …

Ryegrass Disease Could Spread, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Ryegrass Disease Could Spread, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The disease annual ryegrass toxicity kills sheep and cattle grazing pastures which contain infected annual ryegrass. In Western Australia the first confirmed outbreak was in 1968 in the Gnowangerup area.
The disease has noe spread over a range of 450 kilometres and with a total area of perhaps 100 000 hectares. because annual ryegrass is the major sown pasture grass in W.A. the disease could spread throughout the South-West.
There are some precautions that can be taken.

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trials in lupins this year concentrated on testing herbicide for post emergence use in lupins. Of the 20 herbicides tested 12 did not cause significant decreases in crop density and/or yield. However, weed control was often poor and the herbicide phytotoxicity tended to vary between sites. (Chapman, Badgingarra and Avondale). The Chapman and Avondale trials were not harvested because of drought. Trials in 1978 should determine if any of the herbicides tested can safely be recommended. Lupins - summary. Evaluation Of Herbicides For Suppression Of Rhizome Growth From Johnsongrass (Sorghum Halepense L.) In Corn And Soybeans, John Oakes
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense L.) presents a serious problem in the production of corn and soybeans in Kentucky.
Various rates of the thiocarbamates, dinitroanilines, carbamates, amides, ureas, and triazines were used in association with the crops corn (Zea mays L.) and soybeans (Glycine max L.) to determine the degree of suppression on rhizomatous johnsongrass infesting the previously named crops.
Suppression was determined by selecting areas within each treated plot, counting the number of culms, then harvesting johnsongrass rhizomes. Dry weights of rhizomes were then determined as a measure of rhizome suppression.
Results show that of …

The Effect of Septoria nodorum on Yield of 125 Wheat Cultivars. The aim of this experiment was as described for that of 1976. There were some modifications to the treatments which were as follows: (a) Most of the cultivars were 'new' and (b) Three levels of Septoria attack were set up:- 1. Low: cover sprayed throughout the season with the fungicide Difolatan. 2. Moderate: inoculated with Septoria three times, followed at heading out by cover spraying with Difolatan. 3. Severe: inoculated four times no fungicide. The 125 entries were sown as hill plots with the three Septoria environments as main …
