Palmer amaranth has a long history of evolving resistance to herbicides to the point it has become a significant row crop production obstacle. Cotton and soybean growers were offered new technologies in 2016, expanding in-crop herbicide options to include dicamba or 2,4-D. Within three years of commercialization, dicamba use in these crops increased ten-fold and growers began to report Palmer amaranth escapes in west Tennessee auxin-tolerant production systems. A survey of Palmer amaranth escapes in dicamba and 2,4-D-tolerant cotton and soybean fields in Tennessee was conducted in the fall of 2021 with the objective of determining if poor control was …

Poa annua L. is ranked the most troublesome turfgrass weed but can also be a highly desirable turfgrass species. As the Latin name annua implies, the species is thought to persist via an annual life cycle; yet there are many reports in literature of P. annua persisting perennially. Considering that P. annua senescence patterns do not align with other true annual species such as Triticum spp. and Zea mays L., we hypothesized that P. annua presents itself similarly to other perennial, cool-season, turfgrass species that are subject to a confluence of environmental factors in summer that can cause mortality. …

Herbicide-resistant weed species have altered the challenges faced by Tennessee cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, L.) producers. While the weed control and environmental benefits of cover crops have been well-documented, the integration of cover crops into cotton production systems has presented management challenges. In-season broadcast postemergence weed control options are limited in cotton. Furthermore, off-target movement of 2,4-D and dicamba can result in additional management challenges if susceptible cotton is injured. Widespread herbicide resistant weeds over the last several years have fueled a renewed interest in the utility of soil-applied residual herbicides. Residual activity of a herbicide is based on a myriad of factors within and among environments. A common assumption used in simulation models examining herbicide persistence is that herbicide degradation is independent of application rate. These studies compared herbicide concentration on dissipation with three commonly used residual herbicides under field and lab conditions. Junglerice has become a major weed in Tennessee and across the mid-south. Glyphosate resistance and dicamba antagonism has resulted in the reported control failures and rise in prevalence. Junglerice was the most prevalent weed escape in cotton and soybean fields across Tennessee from 2018 to 2020. In all, 13% of the junglerice accessions could no longer be effectively controlled with glyphosate. Due to poor in-crop control, it has been recommended to start clean when trying to control junglerice and other grasses. In many agronomic cropping systems across the United States, Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) is the most economic and troublesome weed for producers. The introduction of glyphosate resistant (GR) crops gave producers the benefit of controlling Palmer amaranth as well as other weeds, a broad window of application, and reduced tillage practices. With the confirmation of GR Palmer amaranth, producers implemented protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO or Protox)-inhibiting herbicides to control these populations in crops such as soybean [Glycine max (L.) The triazines are one of the most widely used herbicide classes ever developed, and play a role in managing herbicide-resistant weed populations in sustainable agricultural production systems. The triazines are traditionally valued for their persistence and season-long weed control in over 50 crops including corn, soybeans, wheat, and vegetables. The literature suggests that atrazine, the most widely used triazine, may no longer remain persistent in soils due to enhanced microbial degradation. The economic impact of the golf industry in the United States (U.S.) in 2011 was estimated to be $176.8 billion. Interspecific hybrid bermudagrasses [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] are some of the most widely utilized grasses on golf courses throughout tropical, subtropical, and temperate climates. Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is an environmentally friendly and cost effective pre-plant soil treatment technique that allows effective control of soilborne pests by creating anaerobic conditions, particularly for specialty and organic crop production under diverse environmental conditions. Species interactions, by changing phenotypic traits, can alter the outcome of subsequent interactions. Plant-mediated responses to herbivores have been extensively studied, but little is known about plant-mediated responses involving parasitic plants within a broader community context that also includes herbivores. Because parasitic plants are important components of many ecosystems and can shape community structure, it is important to understand how host-mediated interactions influence parasite preference and success. This research quantified the level of seedhead suppression, injury, total ergot alkaloid changes, and forage quality changes in endophyte-infected tall fescue resulting from spring applications of aminocyclopyrachlor (ACP) plus metsulfuron (MET). Results indicated that ACP plus MET reduced tall fescue seedhead density 53 to 55% but also reduced yield 39 to 51% at spring harvest. ACP plus MET also reduced total ergot alkaloid concentration 28 to 34% and improved crude protein (CP) and relative forage quality (RFQ).

The main objective of this research was to evaluate the integration of high residue winter-annual cover crops with herbicides, both preemergence and postemergence, to control glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth. The results of these trials indicated that winter-annual cover crops improved early-season weed suppression. However, cover crops alone or as part of an integrated weed management system including only preemergence or only postemergence herbicides was not sufficient to control of glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth. Therefore, winter-annual cover crops should be used in conjunction with existing weed control tactics to achieve adequate glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth control, where applicable.

Creeping bentgrass (CBG) (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is the most widely used cool-season turfgrass species on golf course fairways and tees in the United States, but it is tolerant of few post-emergence herbicides. Commercial herbicide development is currently focused on providing superintendents with herbicides that pose minimal environmental impact and can be used effectively at lower application rates than older alternatives. However, few of these products are safe for use on CBG. Several projects were conducted to evaluate alternative strategies to increase CBG herbicide tolerance.
