Yield Traits Of Geese Of Different Origins Reared In Turkey I. Hatching Traits, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Şeref İnal

This study was carried out to determine the hatching traits of geese of different origins reared in Turkey. In the experiment, geese were selected from different regions of Turkey, (Kars-INRA), Isparta-Armutlu, Konya-Başkuyu and Konya-Tatlıcak); 20 female and 4 male 2-year-old geese were used. Egg production was 39.4, 13.0, 11.4 and 12.6 eggs/geese, and egg laying period was 133, 75, 60 and 73 days, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between the original egg weight and hatched chick weight (P < 0.01). Egg weight loss proportions during incubation for the experimental groups were 12.92, 11.44, 11.38 and 12.22%, respectively.

The objective was to compare the reproductive performances of Brown Swiss cows and heifers synchronized for estrus and ovulation using prostaglandin F 2 alpha (PGF_{2\alpha}) alone or with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Primiparous and multiparous cows (45 to 75 days postpartum; n = 26) and nulliparous heifers (16 to 20 months; n = 26) were randomly assigned to 2 treatment programs. GnRH injection was followed in 7 days by PGF_{2\alpha} injection and then by another GnRH injection 9 days later. Artificial insemination (AI) was performed 16 h after the second GnRH injection. The aim of this study was to determine the quality changes of anchovy (Engraulis engrasicholus, L. 1758) and bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix, L. 1766) due to a multiple freezing-thawing process. The samples were stored in straphor plate at -30 ºC and thawed in a refrigerator (+4 ± 1 ºC, 16 h), microwave (180 W, 15 m) and in running water (+21 ± 1 ºC, 2h) for 15 day periods. This study was conducted from data from 3 years of research performed at the Türkgeldi State Farm in 1997-2000. A total of 1053 Türkgeldi Pro-type B_1 Tahirova x Kıvırcık sheep including mature and young individuals were used as the study material. Litter size and fecundity were 1.42 and 1.51, respectively. The averages of birth weights and weaning weights were 3.43 and 20.04 kg, respectively. The average lactation milk yield was 100.62 kg, and the lactation period was 174.90 days. The levels of milk fat, protein, dry matter, ash and casein were 7.36%, 5.28%, 18.72%, 0.98% and 4.37%, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to isolate Pasteurella spp and other aerobic bacterial agents from the lungs of sheep and goats with pneumonia and to identify Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica by both culture methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In addition, mouse pathogenecity tests were carried out on suspected P. multocida isolates. In the examination of lung samples collected from sheep, 15 (4.3%) P. multocida and 8 (2.3%) M. haemolytica strains were isolated and identified. Tulum cheese was divided into 2 equal parts. One part was inoculated with 10^4 spores/g of aflatoxin-producing Aspergillus parasiticus NRRL 2999 strain. The other part, the control group, was not inoculated. All the samples were ripened in glass jars at 2 different temperatures (10 ± 1 and 20 ± 1 °C) and relative humidities (85 ± 2% and 95 ± 2%) and analyzed for aflatoxin formation on days 1, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 of storage using thin layer chromatography. Two fish species, Rutilus rutilus and Coregenus sp., were processed using 4 techniques, and the effects of the processing were investigated on the bactarial flora of fish products, which is a crucially important criterion with regard to fish spoilage. A total of 85 fish were processed using smoked, fried, marinated and salad techniques. The microbiological features of these processed fish products were examined. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of Box-Cox transformation on estimations of the genetic parameters for egg production traits that do not hold to the assumptions of parametric statistical analysis. Egg production of 1980 animals from 43 sires and 8 dams per sire were used. Five partial record periods were considered: 22-30 weeks of age, 31-34 weeks of age, 22-34 weeks of age, 31-40 weeks of age and 22-40 weeks of age. Thirty-four Streptococcus thermophilus strains were isolated from yogurt samples obtained from various villages in different regions of Turkey. These strains were examined for their antibiotic resistance patterns and plasmid carriage. The susceptibility of the isolates to 8 antibiotics (vancomycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, cephalothin, ampicillin-sulbactam, gentamicin and penicillin G) was determined by the disk diffusion method. Most strains of S. thermophilus were resistant to gentamicin (79%) and penicillin G (64%) and susceptible to chloramphenicol (94%) and tetracycline (88%). Nutritive Value Of Pastures In Kars District I. Botanical And Nutrient Composition At Different Stages Of Maturity, İsmai̇l Kaya, Ahmet Öncüer, Yücel Ünal, Sedat Yildiz

The objectives of this study were to examine the botanical composition and determine the nutritive value of pastures in 9 different locations in Kars district with respect to stages of maturity. Samples were collected bi-weekly from 21 May to 30 July 1999. The Gramineae, Leguminoseae and other plant families constituted 64.2, 22.8 and 13.0% of the plant population, respectively. There was a variation in the nutrient composition of samples collected from different locations (P < 0.05). Average dry matter (DM) content was 28.8% and concentrations of organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), nitrogen-free extract (NFE), ether extract (EE) and ash on a DM basis were 90.8, 15.3, 30.0, 57.6, 43.4, 2.0 and 9.2%, respectively. Stage of maturity altered nutrient composition (P < 0.5). Concentrations of OM, NFE and ash did not change, CP linearly decreased, and CF and NDF quadratically increased with advancing maturity. In conclusion, the Gramineae were the predominant flora of pastures in northeastern Turkey. Moreover, mathematical models developed to characterize changes in the nutrient composition of pastures with advancing maturity may help to improve current feeding strategies.

The effect of ultrasound treatment on milk homogenisation was studied. A microscope, equipped with a camera and ocular micrometer, was used to determine the diameters of fat globules and to evaluate the homogenisation efficiency of milk samples homogenised by using ultrasonic and conventional homogeniser. It was found that ultrasound treatment with high amplitude (power) had an important effect on milk homogenisation compared with conventional homogenisation. As exposure times and power levels increased, homogenisation efficiency also rose. Karyotype analysis was performed on Alburnus heckeli (Battalgil, 1943) (Fam: Cyprinidae) by investigating the number and structures of its chromosomes. The fish used in this study were caught with fishing nets in Lake Hazer and were taken to our laboratory. Fish were injected intraperitoneally with doses of 0.01 ml/g body weight of 0.6% colchicine solution and left for 190 min before sacrificing. It was determined by metaphase investigation that A. heckeli has 2n = 50 chromosomes. The influence of 2 enzyme supplements for diets based on wheat with high or low viscosity on performance and some intestinal parameters of male broiler chickens were investigated. The experiment was of 2 x 3 factorial design, with 2 types of wheat (high or low viscosity) and 3 enzyme treatments (none, Avizyme 1300-xylanase or Avizyme 1500-amylase). Ileal digesta viscosity was significantly (P < 0.029) higher in birds fed with high viscous wheat than with low viscous wheat. Ileal digesta viscosity (P < 0.001) and dry matter content (P < 0.002) were significantly reduced by both enzyme preparations. Body weight gain, feed intake, dry matter intake, feed conversion ratio, DM retention and wet or dry excreta output were not significantly (P > 0.05) affected by all treatments. There were no significant interactions (P > 0.05) between the effects of wheat type and enzyme supplementation. Various BSA (bovine serum albumin) levels and media effects on development of 2-cell stage mouse embryos in in vitro culture were investigated in this 2 stage study. In the first stage, 1400 2-celled mouse embryos were cultured in 2 various BSA-bearing culture media for 96 h and directly observed microscopically. A new medium prepared from ram horn hydrolysate was utilized for the enumeration of aerobic bacteria from environmental samples. First, horns were ground and 35 g of horn flour was hydrolyzed chemically. The hydrolyzed material was completed to 400 ml with deionized water and this resulting solution was termed ram horn hydrolysate (RHH). Some hematological and biochemical parameters were determined in blood specimens collected from 16 clinically healthy gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa). The aim was to estimate the genetic parameters for birth and weaning weights of Turkish Merino lambs by separating direct genetic, maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. Data and pedigree information of the Turkish Merino sheep used in this study were collected at the Marmara Animal Breeding Research Institute from 1995 to 2001. Variance components for birth and weaning weights were estimated by the REML technique. Six different animal models were fitted by including or excluding maternal effects. The development and extent of quinolone-resistance in broiler isolates of campylobacters over a 15-year period was investigated. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid for 567 Campylobacter jejuni and 233 Campylobacter coli strains were determined by the agar dilution method. Of the strains, 180, 420 and 200 were isolated during 1987, 1992 and 2000, respectively. Enrofloxacin or ciprofloxacin resistance was not found in isolates from 1987. The first fluoroquinolone resistance (1.4% to enrofloxacin and 1.2% to ciprofloxacin) appeared in strains isolated in 1992, approximately 2 years after the licensing of enrofloxacin in Turkey. The purpose of the present study was to determine the distribution of cells containing glucagon (A), insulin (B), and somatostatin (D) in the goose pancreas. Small pieces of tissue from 5 adult geese (Anser anser) pancreases were dissected under deep ether anaesthesia. Sections were stained with Crossmon's connective tissue stain for general observations and Gomori's method for pancreatic islet cells. Twenty-five young budgerigars that died with the complaints of abdominal distension and crop swelling were examined pathologically. One hundred and twelve, 8-19-day-old chicks died at the same aviary with the same clinical symptoms over 16 months; the morbidity and mortality rate was 100%. Ascites, hydropericardium, crop and oesophagus ulcers, cardiomegaly, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and focal hepatic necroses were the predominant necroscopic findings. The histopathological examination revealed characteristic intranuclear inclusion bodies in the liver, kidney, spleen, lung, oesophagus, crop, brain, pancreas, heart, gut, thymus and bone marrow. A young dog was examined because of regurgitating at the time of weaning to solid food. The dog was thin, underweight and had a sparse hair coat and distended abdomen. The cervical oesophagus was palpable as a flaccid, air-filled tube in the neck. Cardiac murmurs were not detected on auscultation of the thorax. A test meal of dog food was given and the dog regurgitated masticated, nondigested food a few minutes after eating. A 1-year-old cat with a suspected abortion was brought to the clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. The cat was examined because of a reoccurrence of a bloody vaginal discharge. Failure to detect a foetus by ultrasonography and the presence of an anechoic zone in the uterus revealed that there had not an abortion. Since the anechoic zone was large, it was thought that a pharmacological approach would not be successful. Despite the vaginal discharge, the physical condition of the patient was suitable for surgery. Therefore, we decided to perform an ovariohysterectomy. …

A 1-year-old male German Shepherd dog was brought in because its hard palate had been damaged by the left mandibular canine tooth. On inspection of the oral structure, lingual deviation to the interproximal area between the upper canine and lateral incisor of the left mandibular canine tooth and mild palatal trauma were seen. A 27.2 kb plasmid in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis ELL23, a 32.7 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC5 and a 31.1 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC19 were found to determine exopolysaccharide production (Eps^+) and lactose fermentation (Lac^+) abilities at the end of conjugal transfer studies. Conjugal transfer frequencies (per donor cell) and stability rates of Lac^+/Eps^+ plasmids were determined as 1.0 x 10^{-2 }- 2.8 x 10^{-3} and 80-96%, respectively, after conjugal matings between the aggregative (Agg^+) wild type strains and Agg^+ recipient strain L. lactis subsp. lactis LLT40. We investigated the effects of drop volume on the development of mouse presumptive zygotes to the completely hatched blastocyst stage. For this aim, we established 3 experimental groups. In the first group, we cultured hybrid presumptive zygotes to the hatched blastocyst stage in 10 presumptive zygotes per 5, 10, 20, 40 and 50 µl drops. In the second group, we used microinjected hybrid zygotes for culture. In the last group, we cultured CD-1 mouse presumptive zygotes to the hatched blastocyst stage. The types and rates of acrosome and other (head, mid-piece and tail) abnormal spermatozoon types were determined by the Spermac® staining technique. Semen from 5 stray tom cats under the same management conditions was used. Semen collection was performed under general anesthesia by electro-ejaculator once a week for 5 weeks. After ejaculation the semen was diluted by 100 µl of 0.9% NaCl solution and stained with Spermac® stain for morphological evaluation. Occurrence Of Aflatoxin M_1 In Some Cheese Types Sold In Erzurum, Turkey, Mustafa Gürses, Ahmet Erdoğan, Bülent Çeti̇n

Sixty-three samples of cheese consisting of 23 White cheeses, 14 Kaşar cheeses, 11 Tulum cheeses, 9 Civil cheeses and 6 Lor cheeses (whey-curd), were analyzed for the occurrence of aflatoxin M_1 (AFM_1) using enzymatic immunoassay. In 28 of 63 samples (44.44%), the presence of AFM_1 was detected in concentrations between 7 ng/kg and 202 ng/kg. The mean levels of AFM_1 were 28.08 ng/kg in White cheeses, 22.80 ng/kg in Kaşar cheeses, 74.05 ng/kg in Tulum cheeses, 12.32 ng/kg in Civil cheeses and 15.95 ng/kg in Lor cheeses.
