Differences In Chemical Composition Among Provenances Of Tree Fodder Species In A Subhumid Environment: Relation To Use As Supplements, B H. Dzowela, L Hove, P L. Mafongoya

Studies were initiated in a subhumid Southern African environment to assess the chemical composition and nutritive value of Acacia angustissima (Mill.) Kuntze, Calliandra calothyrsus Meiss. and Leucaena species. The objective was to determine variability in crude protein (CP) concentration, acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), and soluble and insoluble proanthocyanidins from fodder samples of species, subspecies and provenances. A wide range was found in these parameters. The implications of these chemical composition factors, especially proanthocyanidins, on the use of these browse fodders in livestock feeding systems are discussed.

Alfalfa grows wild in some parts of Korea, but specific information is lacking as to its agronomic characteristics, nutritive value and dry matter production potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of wild alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) as a forage. Wild alfalfa and Vernal were field sown at Keongsan, Keongbuk in the spring of 1995. Emergence for Vernal was better than for wild alfalfa. It was observed that the flowering date of the wild alfalfa was delayed by 8 days. The DM production (DMP), chemical composition, and seed production of black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb.) and the yellow oat cultivars ‘UPF2’ , ‘UPF3’ and ‘UPF7’ (A. byzantina C. Kock.) were evaluated under two management systems: plants cut (60 days after sowing-DAS) and uncut for seed production. Oat genotypes were sown in 1993 and 1994. UPF7 was the least productive. No difference was detected (P > 0.05) in the cell wall composition of the genotypes. High values of CP (22.9%) and IVDMD (77.6%) were determined across all genotypes. The experiment was carried out at UNESP, Brazil, to evaluate five Cynodon cultivars: (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst cv “Tifton 68”, Cynodon spp. cv “Tifton 85”, Cynodon dactylon cv “Florakirk”, Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis cv “Florico” e Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis cv “Florona”).
