This study aims to document the geomorphic, sedimentary and paleopedogenic archives in the Quebrada de Purmamarca. The paleoenvironmental interpretation of these archives and the reconstruction of landscape evolution are mainly based on field observations and geomorphological mapping (May 2008). A series of aggradational terraces mostly consisting of coarse debris-flow deposits are the main focus of this investigation. While the associated cut-and-fill processes are probably the result of an interplay between climatic and tectonic controls, the deposition of the youngest terrace level (> 150 m thickness) may likely be attributed to a drop of the periglacial belt of more than 1000 …

The Innamincka Dome and associated low-gradient fan in the Strzelecki Desert is the product of Cenozoic crustal warping that has aided formation of an extensive array of palaeochannels, source-bordering transverse dunes and superimposed linear dunes. These dunes have impeded the course of Cooper Creek and provided a repository of evidence for Quaternary climate change as well as the interactive processes between transverse and linear dune formation. At Turra, Gidgealpa and sites nearby are extensive fluvial and aeolian sand bodies that date from marine isotope stages (MIS) 8-3 and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and are now surrounded or buried by …

Fluctuations In Productivity And Denitrification In The Southeastern Arabian Sea During The Late Quaternary, Pratima Mohan Kessarkar, Venigalla Purnachandra Rao, S Naqvi, Allan R. Chivas, Toshiro Saino Jan 2010

Fluctuations In Productivity And Denitrification In The Southeastern Arabian Sea During The Late Quaternary, Pratima Mohan Kessarkar, Venigalla Purnachandra Rao, S Naqvi, Allan R. Chivas, Toshiro Saino

Sedimentological and stable isotopic characteristics of sediments have been studied in a core from the southeastern Arabian Sea containing records of the past 70 ka. Palaeoproductivity proxies such as organic carbon (Corg), total nitrogen (TN) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) contents, show high values at the core top and during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and marine isotope stage (MIS) 4, suggesting high productivity, whereas low Corg and CaCO3 contents are associated with the MIS 1/2 and mid-MIS 3, indicating reduced productivity. The δ18O values in planktonic foraminifera range between - 2.7‰ and - 0.1‰, with a large glacial-interglacial amplitude Δδ18O …
