Isoseq Transcriptome Assembly Of C3 Panicoid Grasses Provides Tools To Study Evolutionary Change In The Panicoideae, Daniel S. Carvalho, Aime Nishimwe, James Schnable

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The number of plant species with genomic and transcriptomic data has been increasing rapidly. The grasses—Poaceae—have been well represented among species with published reference genomes. However, as a result the genomes of wild grasses are less frequently targeted by sequencing efforts. Sequence data from wild relatives of crop species in the grasses can aid the study of domestication, gene discovery for breeding and crop improvement, and improve our understanding of the evolution of C4 photosynthesis. Here, we used long-read sequencing technology to characterize the transcriptomes of three C3 panicoid grass species: Dichanthelium oligosanthes, Chasmanthium laxum, and …

Mitochondrial Genome Sequencing And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Cynodon Dactylon × Cynodon Transvaalensis, Shilian Huang, Yancai Shi, Miao Chen Jan 2020

Mitochondrial Genome Sequencing And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Cynodon Dactylon × Cynodon Transvaalensis, Shilian Huang, Yancai Shi, Miao Chen

Turkish Journal of Botany

Cynodon dactylon × Cynodon transvaalensis is one of the most important turfgrasses. Sequencing the C. dactylon × C. transvaalensis mitochondrial genome can help us learn more about its genomic composition and allow further study of the population genetics, taxonomy, and evolutionary biology of Poaceae plants and other related species. Here the C. dactylon × C. transvaalensis mitochondrial genome was sequenced using Illumina HiSeq combined with PacBio sequencing technology, and the map of the mitochondrial genome was constructed after de novo assembly and annotation. The C. dactylon × C. transvaalensis mitochondrial genome has 366,612 bp and contains 53 genes, including 31 …

Trichome Micromorphology And Its Significance In The Systematics Of Convolvulus L. (Convolvulaceae), Elham Roudi, Hamed Khodayari, Valiollah Mozaffarian, Shahin Zarre Jan 2020

Trichome Micromorphology And Its Significance In The Systematics Of Convolvulus L. (Convolvulaceae), Elham Roudi, Hamed Khodayari, Valiollah Mozaffarian, Shahin Zarre

Turkish Journal of Botany

Trichomes of 35 species of the genus Convolovulus and one species of the genus Calystegia (C. sepium) were investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The trichomes show a great variation, which provides valuable data for sections and species delimitation in Convolvulus. Trichomes of Convolvulus are nonglandular, simple, and basifixed or rarely asymmetrically medifixed. Characters of taxonomic interest were the degree of curviness (straight to spiral), orientation relative to the epidermal surface (appressed to erect), and presence of papillae on trichome surface. The trichomes are divided into two basic types: cylindrical and flattened ribbon-like. Our data provide the additional evidence …
