The Relationship Of Applied Rock Phosphate On The Growth Of Sweet Corn, Deborah A. Sutherland Dec 1987

The Relationship Of Applied Rock Phosphate On The Growth Of Sweet Corn, Deborah A. Sutherland

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Banding is a more intense application of fertilizers than broadcasting. Literature reviews have indicated that a higher amount of phosphorus in the root zone can enhance the growth and development of seedlings (Amin and Zaidi, 2004). Field trials on Sandy and Loam soils were conducted to test the effects of rock phosphate on sweet corn. These effects were investigated by studying the height, dry weight and phosphorus uptake of plants grown in soils banded with 0-90 lb P2O5/AFS. The results were moderate increases in plant height with applied rock phosphorus. The laboratory studies entailed oven drying forty day old corn …

Abundance And Distribution Of Herbaceous Angiosperms In Grass-Sedge Marshes Of West-Central Florida: The Effect Of Seasonal Water-Level Fluctuation, Pamela S. Botts

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Grass-sedge marshes in west-central Florida were studied to determine the abundances and distributions of herbaceous angiosperms. Cluster analysis, reciprocal averaging, and a biotic boundaries technique were used to analyze the relationship between community composition and depth within the marsh. Shallow areas were dominated by Rhynchospora filifolia, Dichanthelium sabulorum, and Rhynchospora cephalantha. Abundances of the species fluctuated seasonally and varied between marshes. Deep areas of individual marshes differed markedly from shallow areas and from each other. A deep, well-drained marsh supported a monospecific stand of Juncus repens, while a less deep, but poorly drained marsh had a …

Field Method For Describing Root Activity Using Stable Strontium As A Tracer, Michael Aaron Krstich Jun 1987

Field Method For Describing Root Activity Using Stable Strontium As A Tracer, Michael Aaron Krstich

Doctoral Dissertations

Stable Sr was evaluated for use as a tracer for characterizing root growth or root activity of field-grown soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Root activity is defined in this study as the absorption of Sr with subsequent accumulation of Sr in the trifoliates. Previous research had established that the amount of Sr absorbed was directly and positively correlated with total root length and root weight in the zone of tracer placement in the soil. A 0.138 mole ratio of Sr(OOCCh3)2.0.5H2O to SrCl2.6H2O, containing 0.068g Sr ml-1 …

Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer May 1987

Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer

Honors Theses

The common bond between much of the film industry and Joseph McCarthy was insecurity and the drive for national approval. If one grasps the specific characteristics of McCarthy the man, and the methods of these politically "inspired" movies, we can to better place the period into context and acknowledge the fact that, if the citizenry is not aware, and is again caught by an ever-building wave of trickle down sentiment, the 1950s might not prove to be an isolated period in American history. Insecurity was not a fifties novelty. It still exists, and could potentially escalate anti-Communist policy and sentiment …

Investigations Of Field Performance And Physiological Effects Of Metsulfuron And Metsulfuron Combinations On Field Bindweed (Convolvulus Arvensis L.), Hamid Rahimian Mashhadi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) is a noxious perennial weed of many fallow and cropland fields all over the world. Present control methods are not satisfactory for field bindweed. Metsulfuron, 2[[[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2-yl) amino] carbonyl] amino] sulfonyl] benzoic acid, is a new herbicide that has been shown to have activity on bindweed especially when tank mixed with other herbicides. This study was conducted to investigate the field performance and some physiological effects of metsulfuron on field bindweed.

Neither metsulfuron alone nor metsulfuron combinations gave persistent control of field bindweed. Metsulfuron usually increased the activity of other bindweed herbicides. Herbicide application to …

A Taxonomic Re-Evaluation Of Specimens Of The Genus Caloplaca In The E.L. Stover Herbarium Of Eastern Illinois University, Eric J. Cameron

Masters Theses

The genus Caloplaca is the largest genus in the family Teloschistaceae. The 103 species in the genus greatly outnumber any other in the family. Lichens of the genus Caloplaca are usually orange to orange-yellow in color, and range from crustose to subfoliose in form. The orange color is due to an anthraquinone, parietin, the location of which is taxonomically important in this genus of lichens. In some species it occurs only in the apothecia, while in others it is found in both the apothecia and thallus. The spores of this genus are polarilocular, and the width of the isthmus is …

Dissertations and Theses

The influence of iron nutrition on patterns of photosynthetic behavior, nitrogen metabolism, and fixed-carbon allocation is reported for a common freshwater green alga. Cultures of Scenedesmus quadricauda were grown in Fraquil medium in which iron concentrations ranged from 1.0 μM to 0.01 μM (log 10-6 to 10-8 M, respectively). Carbon 14 and nitrogen uptake experiments were conducted at photosynthetically saturating and subsaturating photon flux densities.

Molecular Cloning Of Spinach Chloroplast Dna Isolated By Alkaline Lysis, Robert Gray Drager Jan 1987

Molecular Cloning Of Spinach Chloroplast Dna Isolated By Alkaline Lysis, Robert Gray Drager

Dissertations and Theses

Chloroplast genomes of land plants show conservation of structure and gene arrangement. The spinach chloroplast genome is comprised of a covalently closed. circular DNA molecule of 150 kilobases and is typical of these plants. Approximately 20% of the proteins found in the spinach chloroplast are encoded by the chloroplast genome and translated on chloroplast ribosomes. The remainder are encoded on chromosomes in the nucleus, translated on cytoplasmic ribosomes and transported into the chloroplast.

Spinach chloroplast DNA was isolated from crude 2 chloroplast preparations by a new method. Chloroplasts were lysed with alkaline sodium dodecyl sulfate, contaminating macromolecules precipitated with acidified …
