An expanded description and distribution map of S. glechomifolia, and some taxonomic notes on S. graveolens, S. fragillima, S. mardinensis, and S. nephrophylla are also reported.

Trichome Micromorphology And Its Significance In The Systematics Of Convolvulus L. (Convolvulaceae), Elham Roudi, Hamed Khodayari, Valiollah Mozaffarian, Shahin Zarre Jan 2020

Trichome Micromorphology And Its Significance In The Systematics Of Convolvulus L. (Convolvulaceae), Elham Roudi, Hamed Khodayari, Valiollah Mozaffarian, Shahin Zarre

Turkish Journal of Botany

Trichomes of 35 species of the genus Convolovulus and one species of the genus Calystegia (C. sepium) were investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. The trichomes show a great variation, which provides valuable data for sections and species delimitation in Convolvulus. Trichomes of Convolvulus are nonglandular, simple, and basifixed or rarely asymmetrically medifixed. Characters of taxonomic interest were the degree of curviness (straight to spiral), orientation relative to the epidermal surface (appressed to erect), and presence of papillae on trichome surface. The trichomes are divided into two basic types: cylindrical and flattened ribbon-like. Our data provide the additional evidence …

Seed Morphology And Testa Ultrastructure In Allium Stipitatum Complex (Amaryllidaceae; Allioideae) And Their Systematic Significance, Mina Khorasani, Shahryar Saeidi Mehrvarz, Shahin Zarre

Turkish Journal of Botany

Characteristic features of seed and testa cells in 13 species of Allium, representing its five recognized sections, Compactoprason, Megaloprason, Procerallium, Decipientia and Pseudoprason were studied using both stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. The identified characters, such as seed shape, alignment and shape of testa cells, features of outer cell walls, verruca type, density of verrucae and granules, seed size as well as cell wall undulations were evaluated statistically. The our findings indicated the significance level of P ? 0.01 for examined characters using the Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA analyses. Two principal components of factor analysis revealed the following traits to be most …

Validation Of The Quercus (Fagaceae) Taxa Described By Djavanchir Khoie, Parisa Panahi, Ziba Jamzad Jan 2018

Validation Of The Quercus (Fagaceae) Taxa Described By Djavanchir Khoie, Parisa Panahi, Ziba Jamzad

Turkish Journal of Botany

In a taxonomic revision of the genus Quercus L. in Iran, 25 taxa named by Djavanchir Khoie in 1967 were studied and evaluated. These taxa were described in his PhD thesis but not validly published according to Arts. 30.8. and 40.1. of the ICN. According to our studies, seven of them are accepted taxa. In this paper we validate them. The original descriptions are provided, an identification key for these taxa is presented, and the types are designated in MPU.

Turkish Journal of Botany

The review of specimens from Iran belonging to the Portulaca oleracea L. aggregate resulted in the recognition of six microspecies: P. cypria Danin, P. granulatostellulata (Poelln.) Ricceri & Arrigoni, P. nitida (Danin & H.G.Baker) Ricceri & Arrigoni, P. rausii Danin, P. socotrana Domina & Raimondo, and P. trituberculata Danin, Domina & Raimondo, all reported for the first time for the flora of Iran. The identification was based on the microscopic study of seeds. It is noted that P. oleracea is not confirmed for Iran. Distribution data and an identification key for Portulaca microspecies in Iran are presented.

Molecular Phylogeny Of The Genus Amygdalus (Rosaceae) Based On Nrdna Its And Cpdna Trns-Trng Sequences, Mahnaz Vafadar, Shahrokh Kazempour Osaloo, Farideh Attar

Turkish Journal of Botany

With over 40 species, almonds (Amygdalus L.) are among the most economically important Rosaceae fruit crops distributed in the Irano-Turanian region of southwestern and Central Asia and southeastern Europe. While Amygdalus is considered a separate genus in floristic treatments of Asian countries it is a subgenus or a section of Prunus L. s.l. in other treatments. Phylogenetic relationships of the Iranian wild almonds based on data from 2 nuclear and chloroplast spacers (nrDNA ITS and cpDNA trnS-trnG) were constructed using the maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference, and NeighborNet methods. Data from 2 nuclear and chloroplast spacers were congruent. …

Seed Micromorphological Survey Of The Minuartia Species (Caryophyllaceae) In Iran, Golaleh Mostafavi, Mostafa Assadi, Taher Nejadsattari, Fariba Sharifnia, Iraj Mehregan

Turkish Journal of Botany

Seed micromorphology of 20 species of Minuartia L. (Caryophyllaceae) that represent 2 different subgenera (i.e. Minuartia subgen. Spergella (Fenzl) McNeill and Minuartia subgen. Minuartia) were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Some qualitative and quantitative characters such as seed length and width, seed shape, cell shape, and cell ornamentations were studied. The results showed that seed micromorphology might provide useful tools in recognition and separation of Minuartia hamata (Hausskn.) Mattf. from other species of sect. Minuartia. Minuartia khorassanica Assadi & Mostafavi, a recently described species from Iran, is another species that micromorphologically was quite different. The species M. juniperina (L.) Maire …

Seasonal Changes In Phytoplankton Community Structure In Relation To Physico-Chemical Factors In Bukan Dam Reservoir (Northwest Iran), Ali Mohsenpour Azari, Fereidun Mohebbi, Alireza Asem

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study examines the relationship between phytoplankton population and some important physicochemical variables in the Bukan Dam Reservoir. The sampling was performed monthly from 8 sampling sites from April 2008 to February 2009. Phytoplankton counts were made by inverted microscope. Totally, 55 phytoplankton taxa were identified and included Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Dinophyta, Cyanobacteria, Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta and Cryptophyta. Correlations between some important physicochemical factors and total phytoplankton number were calculated. Results indicated that phytoplankton total number positively correlated with NH_3 (R^2 = 0.845) and negatively correlated with Secchi disc depth (R^2 = -0.613).

The Sections Of Astragalus L. With Bifurcating Hairs In Iran, Farrokh Ghahremaninejad

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study Astragalus L. with bifurcating hairs in sectional levels in Iran are discussed (subgenus Cercidothrix Bunge). This subgenus has more than 800 species in the Old World. Major areas of species endemism for this subgenus occur in Turkey, Iran, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. Iran, with 158 species, is one of the most important centres of diversity. Leucocercis Bunge is the only endemic section for Iran, although other sections have some species in different countries. Thus having a knowledge of the distribution quality in other areas is also important. In reality, this study is part of the author's research on …
