The Genus Crataegus L. (Rosaceae) With Special Reference To Hybridisation And Biodiversity In Turkey, Ali̇ Arslan Dönmez

Turkish Journal of Botany

The genus Crataegus L. has approximately 200 species worldwide. However, the number of the species is increased to 1200 species by some taxonomists. Traditionally, the genus is placed in the subfamily Maloideae and it is closely related to the genera Pyracantha M.Roem., Mespilus L. and Hesperomeles Lindl. The latest phylogenetic analysis of the genus shows that it is closest to the genus Osteomeles Lind. Crataegus is divided into 40 sections by various taxonomists. The genetic diversity centre of the section Crataegus ranges from Turkey to Iran. According to field observations in Turkey, new diversity centres are proposed. The latest studies …

Life Strategies And Adaptations In Bryophytes From The Near And Middle East, Harald Kürschner Jan 2004

Life Strategies And Adaptations In Bryophytes From The Near And Middle East, Harald Kürschner

Turkish Journal of Botany

A review article on life strategies and ecomorphological adaptations (xerothalloid and xeropottioid life syndromes) of bryophytes is given, based on the hitherto known and analysed terrestrial, saxicolous and epiphytic communities of the Near and Middle East. The examples given impressively demonstrate common adaptive trends that arise convergently but independently in unrelated taxa when they evolve under similar habitat conditions. These functional types are important for the establishment, habitat maintenance and dispersal of species and indicate the relationships between site ecology, niche differentiation and species evolution. Their differentiation is a prime example of parallel evolution.

On The Distribution And Relationships Of The South-West Asian Species Of Eryngium L. (Apiaceae-Saniculoideae), Arno Worz

Turkish Journal of Botany

This paper deals with the Old World species of Eryngium L. which grow mostly in regions with a Mediteranean type climate. Two centres of diversity are visible: one in the Western Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula, Morocco), and the other one in South-West Asia. Distribution maps are presented for several species from South-West Asia, which is probably the genus' most important centre of diversity. A preliminary new classification of the genus Eryngium is presented, including a new combination (Eryngium subgenus Fruticosum (Wolff) Wörz stat. nov.). Both the species and the sectional diversity are conspicuously present in Turkey, where 9 of 14 sections …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Isolating barriers between sympatric interfertile species are maintained by processes that occur within their hybrid zones. Although the effects of intrinsic selection on hybrid fitness are well known, less is understood about extrinsic fitness variation. At Tiryal Dağı, NE Turkey, Rhododendron x sochadzeae Charadze & Davlianidze (R. ponticum L. x caucasicum Pall.) forms large populations in which neither segregation nor backcrossing occur, in habitats intermediate between those of its parents. Using single-copy species-specific RAPD and ISSR markers, it was determined that all R. x sochadzeae plants are F1s, and that there are many separate genets present. Through hand pollination experiments, …

Possibility Of An Information System On Plants Of South-West Asia With Particular Reference To The Turkish Plants Data Service (Tubives), M. Teki̇n Babaç

Turkish Journal of Botany

For quick and accurate access to information about a flora of a country it is becoming increasingly important to develop databases. Databases developed and provided by international organisations are expensive to use and difficult to maintain without outside help. It is therefore important for developing countries to develop their own plant databases best suited to their requirements. One such example is the Turkish Plant Data Service (TUBIVES), designed by Turkish systematists. This database is described with some samples, and the possibility of creating a South-West Asian Plants Information Service (SWAP-IS) is briefly discussed.

Computer Technology For The Future Of Sw Asiatic Botany, R. J. Pankhurst

Turkish Journal of Botany

Much computer software already exists for floristic and monographic studies. Database software can hold all the data required for a Flora, and can process it much more accurately. The fundamental data tables are those for names, authorities, people, specimens, bibliography, geography and distribution. To these can be added other data such as descriptions, keys, images, maps, chromosomes and vernacular names. The same data system can be used for collection management and making herbarium labels. It is very important to use data standards such as for books, journals and authorities. Computerised descriptions and keys can also be constructed and held in …

Value Of Trichome Characteristics For The Separation Of Bifurcating Hairy Astragalus L. (Fabaceae) At The Sectional Level, Farrokh Ghahremaninejad

Turkish Journal of Botany

The attachment of hairs in sections of Astragalus L. may be either basal or lateral (bifurcate). This study focuses on Astragali with bifurcating hairs in the Old World (subgenus Cercidothrix Bunge). In this study, it appears that the ratio of hair arm length, and hair form and length are usually stable at the sectional level. The proposition of uniting some sections based on morphological characters is confirmed by hair characters; for example, uniting sections Tamias Bunge, Acantherioceras Rech. f. and Pseudoerioceras Ulzijchutag with Erioceras Bunge. The most important characters in the separation of the sections are macromorphological, but hair characters …

Jasione L. Taxonomy And Phylogeny, Fatima Sales, Ian C. Hedge, William Eddie, Jill Preston, Michael Moeller Jan 2004

Jasione L. Taxonomy And Phylogeny, Fatima Sales, Ian C. Hedge, William Eddie, Jill Preston, Michael Moeller

Turkish Journal of Botany

Jasione L., a genus with small flowers in compact ebracteolate heads subtended by involucral bracts, is very isolated in the Campanulaceae. It is mainly a Mediterranean-European genus with c. 15, mostly polymorphic, species, which show evidence of recent speciation, possibly as recent as the last glaciation. In the west of its distributional range, where the greatest morphological variation occurs, there has been much recent investigation on morphology, anatomy, phenetics, molecular evidence and nomenclature. This research has provided considerable evidence for a reduction in the number of taxa that should be recognised. On-going research is focused on more detailed molecular studies …
