Elevated phosphorus (P) loading of freshwater lakes and reservoirs often results in poor water quality and negative ecological effects. Critical source areas (CSA) of P in the watershed can be difficult to identify and control. A useful concept for identification of a CSA is the P risk index (P Index) that evaluates the P risk associated with distinct source and transport pathways. The objectives of this study were to create a GIS model that adapts the Minnesota (MN) P Index for use at the watershed scale in a mixed-use, mountain environment, and to evaluate its effectiveness relative to field-based assessment. …

Few elements in surface waters are monitored as closely as phosphorus (P) due to its role in the eutrophication and degradation of surface waters. Limiting P mobilization from source areas is, therefore, a central goal of water quality protection plans. But the work of locating sources in mixed-use watersheds is challenged by the spatial and temporal variability of critical source areas (CSAs) of P. Many agricultural communities have developed in Utah since the first settlement, but many no longer exist today. Some of these early communities experienced a "boom and bust," while others struggled for several years and were eventually abandoned. Johns Valley is a good example of these historic communities, as it experienced rapid growth and times of success and prosperity, yet it struggled and was eventually abandoned.

Utah Lake is a shallow eutrophic lake located in central Utah. It is characterized by high nutrient and silt loads and by large algal blooms in late summer and early fall. Phytoplankton samples and environmental data were taken from June through August 1974. Phytoplankton species were identified and then quantified in a Palmer counting cell. Environmental continuum theory was employed to describe algal succession and regression analysis was used to discover interactions between algal communities and the environment. A study area on the southern extensions of the Great Basin cold desert (Kaiparowits Basin, Utah) was selected which has had varying amounts of disturbance. Areas with similar slope and exposure in the Shadscale community were sampled. At each site, soil samples were collected and percent sand, percent clay, percent silt, soluble salts, and hydrogen ion concentrations were measured. Cluster analysis based on percent frequency of the perennial species showed that eight groups or sub-communities were definable within the area sampled. This study makes use of simple statistical models which may be manipulated for projection of changes in the Kaiparowits Region of Southern Utah. A method of determining habitat preferences of small rodents from capture-recapture trapping data is proposed. It is suggested that some aspects of animal behavior regarding trapping may also be explained. Timing of flowering of Oryzopsis hymenoides and Hilaria jamesii as related to enviromental conditions was investigated, and models of the requisite conditions proposed. Cercocarpus ledifolius communities of Utah were sampled to determine which measured environmental characters were influential in determining community structure and dynamics. Nineteen, one-tenth acre stands were sampled by 25 equally spaced .25m2 quadrats. Plant frequency, cover, density, height, diameter, age, elevation, slope and exposure were determined for curl-leaf mahogany within the study area. Soil depth and soil samples were analyzed for texture, pH and soluble salts. Curl-leaf mahogany is found almost entirely on arid rocky slopes, canyon ledges, and plateaus at relatively high elevations on all exposures. This study is a taxonomic revision of the genus Ranunculus for Utah. Twenty-five species and 4 varieties are recognized, and are separated by means of a comprehensive key. A list of pertinent synonyms and types, a morphological description, habitat preference and a discussion are presented for each species and variety. Distribution maps and photographs are included. The basis of this study has been morphological comparison of herbarium specimens and collections and observations by the author throughout Utah.

Timpanogos area is a much used facility in recreation, biology, watershed development, livestock management, and education. It is also representative of a major segment of the overall flora of Utah. This investigation was concerned with the taxonomic relationship between Astragalus beckwithii (Torr. & Gray) var. beckwithii, Astragalus oophorus (S. Wats) var. caulescens (Jones) Jones, and Astragalus megacarpus (A. Gray). An attempt was made to relate some chemical constituents and the toxic effects on rats to the taxonomy. A number of parameters were used; rat toxicity, lipid analysis, selenium atomic absorption, various salts and glucose percentages, as well as the usual morphological measurements taken from herbarium specimens, field observations, and pollen measurements. The study of the East Tintic Mountains was undertaken because no extensive research concerning the plant species present has ever been done. The East Tintic Mountains are in central Utah in Juab, Utah and Tooele Counties. They are about fifty five air miles south-southwest of Salt Lake City. The range is approximately forty two miles long and from one and one-half miles to twelve miles wide. An attempt was made to collect representatives of all vascular plants found on the mountain range. This work presents two hundred and eleven species, representing fifty two families.

The taxonomy and distribution of the Astragalus lentiginosus complex in Utah is presented. The nine varieties are listed and a key is provided which allows determination of the members of the complex in Utah. Each entity is discussed and illustrated. Two distribtuion maps are included for each variety, one showing the distribution in Utah and the other, the general range of the entity. The body of this work is based on the study of herbarium specimens and field observations and collection. These studies have resulted in the synonymizing of two varieties, the inclusion of another and one nomenclatural change.

Ecological and environmental aspects relating to Cercocarpus montanus Raf. Communities were investigated. Twenty study sites were sampled and described. All factors were then analyzed utilizing statistical methods. Signigicantly correlated factors to C. montanus parameters (i.e., frequency, density, cover, height) were: positive correlation--percent clay, percent clay-silt, percent litter cover, and total soluble salts in soil; negative correlation--percent silt-sand, percent sand, soil pH; exposed surface rock, Amelanchier alnifolia cover, Gotierrezia sarothrae cover and altitude. Two genera and three species of definite fossil angiosperm wood have been identified from the diverse flora of the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah for the first time. Well preserved fossil dicotyledonous woods have been found in association with the fern Tempskya and conifer woods at two sites, one east of Castle Dale, Utah 1 and one east of Ferron, Utah. Petrified logs were collected from a horizon between ten and thirty feet below the overlying Dakota Sandstone at the Castle Dale site. A taxonomic investigation of the algal flora of the Brigham Young University campus was conducted from October 1971 to August 1972. This algal flora consisted of 27 genera and 36 species of Chlorophyta, 2 genera and 2 species of Euglenophyta, 32 genera and 106 species of Bacillariophyceae (including 16 genera and 33 species of soil diatoms), 1 genus and 2 species of Chrysophyta excluding diatoms and 6 genera and 14 species of Cyanophyta. Indian ricegrass at the Desert Range Experiment Station forty-seven miles west of Milford, Utah, is damaged by the larvae of Coenchroa illibella, Diatrae sp. and Typoceris ceraticornis, the latter being the most destructive. The biology of the insects and the extent of damage inflicted are discussed. Uninfested plants produced more new stems than infested plants. Plants having a basal diameter of 4 to 6.9 cm and 7 to 9.9 cm were the most frequently infested and, consequently, the most severely damaged.

A total of 28 burn areas, that varied in age from 3-100+- years, were analyzed in a study of succession following fire, in the pin yon-juniper woodlands of west central Utah. Data were collected by means of the line-point and quadrat methods. These data were subjected to a multiple regression analysis. Canopy cover, basal area (sq. ft./acre) and density (trees/acre) of juniper were highly correlated with age of burn. Percentage dead sagebrush was found to be positively correlated with density of junipers. The stages of succession following fire began with weedy annuals, that reached a peak within 3-4 years. Summer field studies were conducted on the Mud Creek Sleep Allotment of the Uinta National Forest, Wasatch County, Utah. Laboratory and herbarium studies were carried out at Brigham Young University. Specific objectives were to investigate seed germination, seedling development, root system, phenology, palatability, and describe the physical site factors where bluebell occurred. A cretaceous (Cenomanian) flora from the Dakota Sandstone Formation near Westwater, Grand County, Utah contains an admixture of ferns and angiosperms. The ferns of this flora are representative of an older Jurassic-Wealden vegetational type, whereas the angiosperms are typical of the modern vegetational type. Species of Gleichenia and Matonidium and Astralopteris coloradica represent the dominant forms in this flora. The Westwater flora contains fourteen genera including nineteen species and one variety. New species described from this flora include Asplenium dakotensis, Coniopteris westwaterensis and Ilex serrata.

During the summero f 1964 a taxonomica and ecological study was made of the desmids (microscopic green algae) found in Lily Lake. The study site is a subalpine lake in the Wasatch National Forest of the Uinta Mountains, Utah. The lake is located about one-half mile west of Trial Lake at an elevation of approximately 10,000 feet. The lake is an acidic, cold, lentic bog pond characteristic of this region. Aquatic fungi in-Powell's Slough were.studied in 1967 & 1968. Collections were made and water temperature, oxygen content & pH values were measured at weekly intervals. For collections, wire baskets containing substrata were submerged in water for one month. After collecting, substrata were brought to the laboratory. Identification was based on the keys of Sparrow, 1960. Three predominant and economically important shrubs of the sagebrush-grass range community in Utah, namely big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.), rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Pall.) Britt.), antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata (Pursh) DC), and a widely re-seeded range grass, crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn.) were sampled during the summers of 1966 and 1967, and yielded twenty species of thrips. This vegetational analysis is concerned with changes which have cocurred since 1949 in a mountain brush community within an exclosure in the central Wasatch Mountains. The exclosure, established in 1949, is located in Pole Canyon on lower Provo Canyon. Utah is a state containing a complexity of landforms in a unique continental setting which results in a variety of climatic and edaphic conditions. The variety, however, is not expressed on a latitudinal plane from north to south but is primarily altitudinal, changing from the playa or valley floors to the mountain tops. The associated arrangement of vegetation, consequently, is usually according to elevation, the elevation generally regulation precipitation and thus edaphic conditions. A taxonomic and ecological survey of the algae of Lilly Lake in the Uinta Mountains, Utah, was carried on from June 1967 to November 1967. The lake is a typical acid bog lake with an average pH range of 4.5 to 6.9. Extremes of pH in the alkaline range were present due to additional factors. Algae identified included 96 genera and 208 species. These were found in many different types of microenvironmental niches.
