A New Variety Of Bromus (Poaceae) From Turkey: Bromus Psammophilus Var. Robustus Var. Nova, Hali̇l Çakan, Hildemar Scholz

Turkish Journal of Botany

Bromus psammophilus P.M.Sm., a rare endemic species, was known only from the type collection on the coastal dunes of Çukurova Delta (Adana, Turkey). Specimens belonging to the new and typical varieties of this taxon were collected from sand dunes and dune slacks where the type specimen was collected the first time. Bromus psammophilus var. robustus Çakan & H.Scholz was described as a new variety; in examination of the newly collected specimens, it differs from the typical variety by its longer spikelets, higher flower numbers in spikelets, and glabrous glumes.

The species of the section Oxytona Bernh., classified under the genus Papaver L., are of great importance due to their medical alkaloid contents such as morphine, codeine, and thebaine. A clearly established classification system is not available for Oxytona species. The aim of this study was to find relationships among 53 accessions belonging to 3 important Oxytona species, i.e. Papaver bracteatum Lindl., P. orientale L., and P. pseudo-orientale (Fedde) Medw., using 19 different morphological characters, 1 chemical character, and 15 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. The genus Malcolmia W.T.Aiton is taxonomically problematic, and some of its species have recently been transferred to the genera Strigosella Boiss. and Zuvanda Dvorák. Three species of this genus are native to Turkey. The revision studies based on molecular data, which were collected in the past few years, display the phylogenetic relations and the systematic positions of the taxa more reliably and apparently. Micromorphological Studies On Nutlet And Leaf Indumentum Of Genus Teucrium L. (Lamiaceae) In Iran, Maryam Eshratifar, Farideh Attar, Kazem Mahdigholi

The micromorphology of leaf indumentum and nutlet surface of 12 species belonging to the 6 sections of the genus Teucrium L. was studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Eight types of trichomes are identified including unbranched unicellular trichomes, unbranched multicellular trichomes, sessile glands, subsessile glands, stalked-multicellular glands long clavate glandular trichomes (with 3-5 cells), trichomes with large thin-wall, trichomes with non-micropapillate basal cell, which are the most general types on the adaxial side of the leaves, and branched trichome with long axis is the exclusive type and present in Teucrium polium L. Quercus cerris L. var. cerris has a conspicuous bark which is generally thicker than that of other Quercus L. species in Turkey. The present study aimed to provide detailed anatomical characterisation of the bark of this species, which is necessary to assess its potential. The anatomical studies were conducted on the bark samples of nine 70- to 80-year-old trees growing in 3 sites of Andırın district from Kahramanmaraş province in Turkey. Silene gevasica Hamzaoğlu sp. nova is described as a new species from Gevaş district (Van province). The specimen was collected from calcareous rocks, at an altitude between 2100 and 2200 m from Artos mountain. The new species is similar to Silene araratica Schischk. The differences between these 2 taxa are discussed.

Seasonal Changes In Phytoplankton Community Structure In Relation To Physico-Chemical Factors In Bukan Dam Reservoir (Northwest Iran), Ali Mohsenpour Azari, Fereidun Mohebbi, Alireza Asem

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study examines the relationship between phytoplankton population and some important physicochemical variables in the Bukan Dam Reservoir. The sampling was performed monthly from 8 sampling sites from April 2008 to February 2009. Phytoplankton counts were made by inverted microscope. Totally, 55 phytoplankton taxa were identified and included Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Dinophyta, Cyanobacteria, Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta and Cryptophyta. Correlations between some important physicochemical factors and total phytoplankton number were calculated. Results indicated that phytoplankton total number positively correlated with NH_3 (R^2 = 0.845) and negatively correlated with Secchi disc depth (R^2 = -0.613).

Phytosociological analysis performed over 2005 to 2009 revealed that Cassia occidentalis L. is a dominant species at 3 of 4 sites in Agra district, India, that were previously observed to be dominated by heavy populations of Parthenium hysterophorus L. In order to determine the role of biomolecular interaction, i.e. the allelopathic effect, if any, on this shift of floral pattern effects, aqueous shoot and root cold leachates were determined on seed germination, shoot cut bioassay, seedling bioassay, chlorophyll, nitrogen, and protein content of P. hysterophorus. Fruit And Seed Morphology Of The Fumaria L. Species (Papaveraceae) Of Iran, Fatemeh Ebrahimzadeh Araii, Maryam Keshavarzi, Masoud Sheidaii, Parinaz Ghadam

The macro and micro fruit and seed morphology and surface ornamentations of 21 populations of 6 Fumaria L. species were investigated using stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy. These data are shown to support data from the general morphology. The results indicate that the fruit and seed characters of the genus Fumaria are valuable for taxonomic applications and are useful for classification. F. officinalis show a different shape in their fruit. The close relationships are observed for F. parviflora and F. vaillantii. F. indica, as a hybrid between F. asepala and F. parviflora, shows intermediate micro-morphological features.

Pollen Morphology Of The Genus Seseli L. (Umbelliferae) In Turkey, Ebru Doğan Güner, Hayri̇ Duman, Nur Münevver Pinar

Morphological features of pollen of 11 Turkish taxa belonging to the complex genus Seseli L. were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. On the basis of exine sculpturing, 3 main types were recognised in Seseli: Type 1, rugulate at equator, psilate-perforate at pole; Type 2, striate-reticulate at equator, rugulate at pole; and Type 3, rugulate at equator, striate at pole. The study revealed that palynological characters display taxonomic significance in the genus.

Efficient micropropagation and root culture protocols were developed for the endemic Astragalus chrysochlorus Boiss. & Kotschy. A high frequency of shoot formation (100%) and maximum multiplication (13 shoots per hypocotyl explant) were achieved on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with 0.5 mg/L trans-Zeatin riboside (ZR). By using single regenerated hypocotyl explants, rooting was achieved at a rate of 93% on MS medium containing 2% sucrose without growth regulators. High frequency callus initiation and growth were achieved when single hypocotyl explants were inoculated on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between in vitro competition and stress, and their effects on tissue culture response of Linum usitatissimum L. hypocotyl explants. Competition among explants was achieved by varying the spacing among the explants cultured. Four different culture spacing distances were used: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 cm. Six weeks after culture initiation, hypocotyl fresh and dry weights, shoot regeneration percentage, shoot number per hypocotyl, regenerated shoot length, total shoot number per petri dish, and total chlorophyll content were recorded. In this article, an attempt has been made to establish the qualitative composition of macromycetes in the communities of scale-leaf juniper, Juniperus excelsa M.Bieb. and J. foetidissima Willd., distributed in Turkey. A total of 127 species of macrofungi were registered, 2 belonging to Ascomycota and 125 to Basidiomycota. Of those, 69 species were collected in Juniperus excelsa stands, 23 in J. foetidissima stands, and 35 species in both juniper stands. We investigated the flower characteristics of 7 Alstroemeriaceae plants - 5 Alstroemeria L. species and 2 Bomarea Mirb. species. The flower and tepal sizes, and tepal colours were compared. The flower shape in Alstroemeria psittacina Lehm. was found to be similar to that in Bomarea coccinea (Ruiz & Pav.) Baker. The length/width ratio of B. salsilla (L.) Mirb. was intermediate compared with that of the other species. These preliminary data will be useful in selecting wild species in order to examine interspecific or intergeneric hybridisations in the breeding of Alstroemeriaceae plants.

In this study, the anatomical characteristics of the leaves of the Juniperus section of the Juniperus L. species [Juniperus drupacea Lab.; J. communis L. var. communis; J. communis var. saxatilis Pall.; J. oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus; and J. oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa (Sibth. & Sm.) Ball] are reported for those samples naturally distributed in Turkey. Microscopic views of the transverse and surface sections from the leaves of each species were examined and described. Differentiations were made between 3 species as a result of observations of the arrangement of the palisade parenchyma and the location of the secretory canals.

Ocimum basilicum L. seedlings were exposed to different concentrations of Cr (0-8 mg L^{-1} of Cr^{3+}) to evaluate the cellular localisation of chromium, plant accumulating capacity, and potential cellular defence mechanisms against Cr stress. Dried plant tissues (roots and shoots) were exposed to X-ray microanalysis for element determination (including Cr, Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, and Mo). Results showed that the highest amount of Cr had accumulated in the roots of the plants treated with 8 mg L^{-1} of Cr^{3+}, while less Cr was transported to the shoots. Onosma aksoyii Aytaç & Türkmen sp. nova (Sect. Haplotricha H.Riedl, Boraginaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species. It grows in a Pinus nigra forest on serpentine rocks in Southern Anatolia (Konya province). Diagnostic characters of related species are compared and discussed. The characteristic features of pollen, stomata structure, and hairs were studied using a scanning electron microscope. The distribution map of this new species is presented.

The diagnostic morphological characters of these new species and other closely related species (V. diversifolium Hochst. and V. cymigerum Hub.-Mor.) are discussed. In addition, distribution maps of V. ergin-hamzaoglui and its related species are provided. Silene hamzaoglui Budak sp. nova is described as a new species from Çekerek (Yozgat, Turkey). The specimen was collected from calcareous rocky places, at an altitude between 1140 and 1180 m. The new species is similar to Silene duralii Y.Bağcı and Silene capillipes Boiss. & Heldr. The differences among these 3 species are discussed.

Four species of lichens and 11 species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from the Republic of Daghestan for the first time for the Caucasus region. Of these, 7 taxa are new to Russia: Caloplaca badioreagens Tretiach & Muggia, Caloplaca polycarpa (A.Massal.) Zahlbr., Lichenothelia renobalesiana D.Hawksw. & V.Atienza, Stigmidium rouxianum Calat. & Triebel, Toninia episema (Nyl.) Timdal, Toninia leptogii Timdal, and Verrucaria latericola Erichsen. Comments on their geographic distribution, habitats, substrate, and comparisons with morphologically similar taxa are presented.

Macrofungi Of Kemaliye District (Erzincan), Hakan Alli

The material of this study comprises macrofungi specimens collected from different localities in Kemaliye district (Erzincan, Turkey) in 2006 and 2007. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 106 taxa under 35 families belonging to the classes Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes are described: 3 of them, namely Psathyrella panaeoloides (Maire) Arnolds, Galerina stylifera var. stylifera (G.F.Atk.) A.H.Sm. & Singer, and Inocybe amblyspora Kühner, are new records for Turkey.

Four macrofungi taxa (Conocybe filaris (Fr.) Kühner, Hygrocybe glutinipes (J.E.Lange) R.Haller Aar. var. glutinipes, Inocybe calospora Quél., and I. margaritispora (Berk.) Sacc.) collected from Trabzon province are reported from Turkey for the first time. Comments on their habitats and substrata and a short diagnosis are provided for each new taxon new to Turkey.

Anthracobia melaloma, Scutellinia barlae (Pyronemataceae), and Pseudoplectania vogesiaca (Sarcosomataceae) ascomycetous members of macrofungi collected from Muğla and Antalya provinces are recorded for the first time from Turkey. Anthracobia and Pseudoplectania are also new records at genus level.

Molecular Phylogeny And Divergence Times Estimates Of Lilium Section Liriotypus (Liliaceae) Based On Plastid And Nuclear Ribosomal Its Dna Sequence Data, Nursel İki̇nci̇

In the present study the phylogeny and the biogeography of the genus Lilium L. section Liriotypus Asch. et Graebn. were investigated and divergence times for the section Liriotypus were calculated. The study group covers Lilium species from Europe, the Italian and Balkan peninsulas, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. Plastid DNA sequence data (the trnC-petN intergenic spacer and petN gene) and nuclear DNA ITS sequence data were used to infer the phylogenetic history of the section Liriotypus. Molecular phylogenetic dating using the molecular clock hypothesis with sequences of nrDNA ITS region was used to calculate the time of diversification within the section …

A New Species Of The Genus Cota (Asteraceae) From Uludağ, Turkey, Mehmet Ufuk Özbek, Meci̇t Vural, Ruzi̇ye Daşkin

Cota hamzaoglui U.Özbek & Vural (Asteraceae, Anthemideae) is described as a new species from Uludağ in the Bursa province of Turkey. Information given on the new species includes a Latin diagnosis, taxonomic description, line drawing, and several photographs, as well as comments on the species' geographical distribution, including a map, and its affinity to Cota oxylepis Boiss. and C. fulvida (Grierson) Holub.
