This study was undertaken to examine the relative severity of defoliation of young branches (those comprising <4 nodes) and parent stolons of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in rotationally grazed pastures stocked al either 2.5, 5.0 or 7.5 bulls/ha. On 7 occasions over a year, the defoliation of expanded leaves of parenl and branch stolons was assessed using tagged stolons. Petiole length of leaves ,vas measured before grazing. Leaves of young branch stolons (43% of the total number of leaves defoliated) were less severely defoliated than leaves of parent stolons (64%). A farmlet study was conducted to investigate lhe potential for improving dairy productivity and profit potential through increasing stocking rates above those commonly used in 1he north-eastern USA. High-producing Holstein cows were grazed at seasonal stocking rotes (SR) of 3.9 (HSR), 3.2 (MSR) and 2.5 (LSR) cows/ha. Measurements were taken of quantity and quality of pasture offered to cows, silage harvested and fed and milk production during 175 days of grazing in 1990. GRASSMAN, an agricultural decision-support model, has been modified to include sources, sinks and storages of greenhouse gases. The modified model was used to investigate the effects of changes in stocking rate and burning management on greenhouse gas emissions of southern Queensland grasslands. These grasslands are significant net emitters of greenhouse gases in their natural state, resulting in large differences between net and anthropogenic (man-made) emissions and hence, to different conclusions regarding emission reduction strategies. At moderate stocking rates, anthropogenic emissions could be reduced by about 20% with little loss of productivity. However, similar reductions in net emissions require larger management …

The potential herbage production of Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana cv. Callide)•stylo (Stylosanthes gulanensis cv. Cook) pasture was assessed during S (late wet to dry season) periods at Shika, Nigeria. The pasture received 200 kg N and 30 kg P/ha during the first (198S- 1986) and fifth (1989-1990) grazing periods (GP). Some P only was applied in other periods. Alfagraze (grazing-tolerant) and Apollo (hay-type) lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) cultivars were stocked continuously with beef steers at 3 grazing pressures (GP) for 3 years In central Georgia, USA. Lucerne stands declined at the highest GP, Apollo stand density being only 23% of that of Alfagraze in grass-free areas at the end of 3 years. Rapid encroachment by volunteer bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers,) at high GP resulted in greater stand loss in Apollo than Alfagraze. A simple mathematical model (a linear dynamical system) was constructed to predict herbage consumption by grazing animals. This model was used to compare 3 grazing methods over a range of stocking rates at low pasture mass. The grazing methods compared were: continuous grazing (CTS), rotational grazing with equal time intervals (BQ), and rotational grazing where the time of shift was optimal for maximising intake (OPT). Three rates of phosphate (0, 11 and 26 kg/ha P) were applied to phosphorus-deficient native grassland in northern Syria, and botanical composition, biomass and legume seed production were monitored. The experiment was grazed at low and high ( 1.1 and 2.3 sheep/ha per year) stocking rates. The site is typical of native grassland within the cereal zone of west Asia where cropping is not possible because of shallow, stony soils and steep slopes. It has been hypothesized that patch and community selection are driven by forage quality and/or quantity. We assess the relationship between vegetation characteristics and community and patch selection by sheep under continuous grazing at different stocking rates in an heterogeneous pasture. Our results suggest that when communities strongly differed in nutritive value sheep recurrently select the higher quality community in spite of its low biomass. However, sheep do not completely exclude the poorer quality community, generating a patchy vegetation pattern.

An experiment with two groups of 15 Friesian cows grazing independent areas, with no N and 240 kg N ha-1, was run during two years to see the levels of milk production based on a grass/white clover pasture, maintaining high levels of herbage quality. N application decrease clover content from 55% to 42%. The total DM response to N was low. Herbage utilization was maintained similar in both treatments. The effect of two stocking rates of 5 (L) and 7 (H) heads of lactating dairy cows per hectare on herbage utilization and milk production were determined under a time-restricted grazing during 2 years from 1993 to 1994. The annual herbage utilization and milk production from pasture in 1993 were lower in H than L (herbage, 7.9 vs. 9.1tDM/ ha; milk, 8.1 vs. 9.6t/ha) since the days of grazing cycle was considerably shorter in H than L (7.8 vs. 17.1days). A hydrologic-based forage production model, PHYGROW, was used to simulate forage production and carrying capacity of a subtropical shrubland complex of over 34 species grazed by various ratios of cattle and goats with a population of indigenous white-tailed deer over a 20-yr simulated weather profile. Common approaches to evaluating carrying capacity are stocking rate trials for research and trial and error adjustments for ranchers. These approaches are inadequate as operational decision guides for grazing management. The Grazing Manager (TGM) is a generalized management level dynamic model that provides a new approach to stocking rate analysis. Grazing pressure is integrated over time with a function called pasture demand ratio (PDR) which is based on cumulative forage demand relative to cumulative forage production within a forage year. We describe the development and use of a simple, generic method for predicting botanical composition of herbivore diets, thereby allowing resource managers to consider selective foraging when setting stocking rates. For a particular season and herbivore, we found that forage species fall into one of 3 selection categories: preferred (consistently selected for), undesirable (consistently selected against), and variable (inconsistent selection pattern). Our studies showed that, for most situations, dietary composition is adequately predicted from regression relationships with the field proportions of preferred and undesirable species. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of grazing system and stocking rate on spring profile soil water, soil water extraction and evapotranspiration (ET) of a newly established grass/ legume pasture. The experiment, located on a fine sandy loam soil in western Manitoba, was a two replicate RCBD with continuous and rotational grazing at stocking rates of 1.1 and 2.2 steers/ha. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and improved productivity of reduced tillage pasture renovation methods in the establishment of triple species pasture mixtures into an existing naturalized stand. Experimental treatments, 2 (low and high stocking rates) by 2 (frost- and sod-seeding methods) factorial with an additional non-renovated pasture control treatment, were arranged in a randomized complete block design with two replications. After 16 years of grazing ‘Coastal’ and common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] pastures each at 3 levels of forage mass, N vs non-N fertilizer was superimposed to assess stand maintenance of bermudagrass and cow-calf performance. After 7 additional years of fertility treatments, N plus overseeded ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) provided for 202 days grazing; whereas, K plus overseeded clovers (Trifolium incarnatum L.) and (T. vesiculosum Savi.) provided adequate forage for 179 days grazing. Three stocking rates (low: one sheep 2.25 ha-1, medium: one sheep 1.5 ha-1 year-1 and high: one sheep 0.75 ha-1 year-1) were studied for 7 seasons (1990/91-1996/97) on native range and on pasture over sown with fodder shrubs at Maragha, northwest Syria. There were 8 Awassi sheep in each stocking rate treatment, and the treatments were replicated 3 times in fenced paddocks. The effect of stocking rate on soil erosion has been at the forefront of water and soil conservation studies in recent years. By observing soil erosion caused by rainfall in typical steppe on the Loess Plateau in China, this research aimed to further explore the effect of stocking rate on soil erosion. The results showed that all the concerned indicators of soil erosion (runoff, runoff coefficient, soil loss, soil organic carbon loss, and soil total nitrogen and total phosphorus loss) had a significant (P < 0.001) positive linear correlation with stocking rate alone, and precipitation alone, while the indicators of runoff and soil loss had a significant (P < 0.01) negative linear correlation with typicalsteppe biomass (aboveground biomass, litter mass, and belowground biomass). Both stocking rate and precipitation had large significant (P < 0.01) effects on soil erosion via changes in aboveground biomass, litter mass, and soil organic carbon.

n Southern Australian sheep and beef farmers have been slow to adopt technology related to grazing management and pasture utilisation despite clear evidence of a strong link between utilisation (stock per ha) and profitability. Between 1971-95, the average stocking rate on farms was 10-12 dry sheep equivalent per hectare (dse/ha) (Anon 2004). Intensification of production in the water-limited grasslands of temperate Australia has increased the need to quantify their sustainable carrying capacity. Empirical rainfall-based rules for estimating stocking rate fail when used in districts with differing weather patterns, or when soil and pasture resources limit the utilisation of rainfall. Grazing systems simulation should help to overcome these problems because local conditions can be taken into account. This study investigated the impact of soil resources on potential stocking rate, profitability and production risk in a local climatic area of the southern tablelands of NSW, Australia.

The sheep industry is a mayor component of the pastoral industries, given its importance for the Uruguayan economy. In the last decade, sheep farmers have been more interested in low cost technologies to enhance productivity and profit. The objective of this study, conducted in the Basaltic region of Uruguay, was to evaluate the effect of legume species and stocking rate of lambs on sward structure, production, composition and nutritive value.

Modern textile tendencies show that consumers prefer light, soft, resistant, natural, and comfortable clothes, for which fine and superfine wools are in great demand, particularly at the high value markets (Whiteley, 2003). The main objective of the present study was to define sustainable stocking rates and grazing systems on native swards for fine and superfine wool production in the Basaltic region of Uruguay.
