Background: Large-diameter trees have an outsized influence on aboveground forest dynamics, composition, and structure. Although their influence on aboveground processes is well studied, their role in shaping belowground fungal communities is largely unknown. We sought to test if (H1) fungal community spatial structure matched aboveground forest structure, (H2) fungal functional guilds exhibited differential associations to aboveground tree, snag, and deadwood, and (H3) that large-diameter trees and snags have a larger influence on fungal community richness than smaller-diameter trees. We used MiSeq sequencing of fungal communities collected from soils in a spatially intensive survey in a portion of Cedar Breaks National …

Data From Callery Pear Prairie Survey, Michaela J. Woods, Grace Dietsch, Ryan W. Mcewan

Five Rivers MetroParks Collaboration Data Archive

This dataset was curated following the examination of two prairies invaded by Callery pear, and two that were not invaded. We assessed soil nutrients and chemistry, plant cover, and proximity to different land uses to see if they impacted Callery pear abundance, presence/absence or cover.

Pando Aspen 2021 Remeasure, Paul C. Rogers Mar 2022

Pando Aspen 2021 Remeasure, Paul C. Rogers

Browse all Datasets

Upland aspen (Populus spp.) forests contribute significantly to biodiversity in their circumboreal role as keystone species. The 43-hectare Pando aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clone in Utah, USA, is thought to be the largest living organism on earth, but is faltering due to chronic herbivory. Long-term resilience in aspen communities, including Pando, rests on successful recruitment of vegetative suckers. This is the first trend assessment of this threatened iconic forest using a vital indicators approach. I examined 64 plots using 19 indicators to determine current conditions. Findings show that a genetically uniform Pando is 'breaking up' because of herbivory fencing. Initial …

Crop Adaptation And Improvement For Drought-Prone Environments, Ndjido A. Kane, Ed., Daniel Foncéka, Ed., Timothy J. Dalton, Ed. Jan 2022

Crop Adaptation And Improvement For Drought-Prone Environments, Ndjido A. Kane, Ed., Daniel Foncéka, Ed., Timothy J. Dalton, Ed.

NPP eBooks

This book focuses on three important elements in the development of cereal and legume crops in semi-arid West Africa. The first section illustrates the socioeconomic factors that affect the food system for these crops and contains an overview of crop production and consumption in the region. Then, important inputs that affect system productivity are presented: preferences for new seed varieties, yield response to fertilizer, counterfeit herbicides, climate information, and the way farmers develop expectations about the weather events that shape cropping outcomes. The final chapter of section one is dedicated to understanding urban consumer preferences for processed food products derived …

The invasive tree Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana) is problematic in open habitats in the American Midwest. We investigated the efficacy of various control techniques on P. calleryana invasion in grasslands. Treatments were applied to P. calleryana stems that had experienced mowing annually for several years and were sprouting (n = 100 stems) and response of those stems was measured.

The invasive tree Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana) is problematic in open habitats in the American Midwest. We investigated the efficacy of various control techniques on P. calleryana invasion in grasslands. Treatments were applied to P. calleryana stems that were single-stemmed trees (around 7 years; n = 40 stems), and response of those stems was measured.
