Fungicide Data, Amber Johnson Dec 2023

Fungicide Data, Amber Johnson

ScholarsArchive Data

This dataset contains emergence, biomass, and fungal biomass data collected during a laboratory study examining the effects of soil fungal level and seed coating treatment on the growth of bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata). Pathogenesis from soil and seed-borne fungus can limit success when restoring native species. Fungicides can combat fungal pathogens, but in some studies, fungicides treatments are ineffective at improving seedling emergence over untreated, control seed. These studies suggest low fungal presence due to dry conditions may be the cause of the ineffectiveness of fungicide treatments for some years and sites. This study tested if fungicide treatment …

Gibberellic Acid Data, Amber Johnson Aug 2023

Gibberellic Acid Data, Amber Johnson

ScholarsArchive Data

This dataset contains plant emergence and survival data collected from a field study which focused on overcoming seed dormancy. Seed dormancy can present a challenge within a restoration scenario where rapid establishment is required. Soaking seeds in gibberellic acid (GA3) can overcome dormancy and increase germination but this treatment may not be effective outside the laboratory. An easier and potentially more effective method to apply this hormone is to coat seeds with a GA3-impregnated polymer, which provides a slow release of GA3. Seed dormancy can also be mitigated by creating a favorable microsite with …

Locations of 74,755 vascular plant vouchers representing 2,425 species were digitized into a spatial database from the Atlas of the Vascular Plants of Utah (Albee et al. 1988). Source maps consisted of 1:6,000,000-scale shaded relief maps of Utah with points representing collection locations by species. Location points, representing 1 or more specimens, were transposed onto these maps from the approximately 400,000 herbarium records of 3 major universities and federal land management agencies.

Background: Large-diameter trees have an outsized influence on aboveground forest dynamics, composition, and structure. Although their influence on aboveground processes is well studied, their role in shaping belowground fungal communities is largely unknown. We sought to test if (H1) fungal community spatial structure matched aboveground forest structure, (H2) fungal functional guilds exhibited differential associations to aboveground tree, snag, and deadwood, and (H3) that large-diameter trees and snags have a larger influence on fungal community richness than smaller-diameter trees. We used MiSeq sequencing of fungal communities collected from soils in a spatially intensive survey in a portion of Cedar Breaks National …

Pando Aspen 2021 Remeasure, Paul C. Rogers Mar 2022

Pando Aspen 2021 Remeasure, Paul C. Rogers

Browse all Datasets

Upland aspen (Populus spp.) forests contribute significantly to biodiversity in their circumboreal role as keystone species. The 43-hectare Pando aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clone in Utah, USA, is thought to be the largest living organism on earth, but is faltering due to chronic herbivory. Long-term resilience in aspen communities, including Pando, rests on successful recruitment of vegetative suckers. This is the first trend assessment of this threatened iconic forest using a vital indicators approach. I examined 64 plots using 19 indicators to determine current conditions. Findings show that a genetically uniform Pando is 'breaking up' because of herbivory fencing. Initial …

College of Agriculture & Life Sciences Publications and Scholarship

This dataset consists of approximately 13,000 jpg format images. These images were collected using consumer grade trail cameras manufactured by Browning Trail Cameras. Cameras were installed across Mississippi (USA) in 2019 and 2020 from March through September. Images collected are exclusively oblique, unobstructed views of the sky. Cameras were placed in time-lapse mode and set to collect one image every hour. Our intent in this work was to first compare deep learning approaches to classify sky conditions with regard to cloud shadows in agricultural fields using a visible spectrum camera. Sky conditions, and specifically shadowing from clouds, are critical determinants …

Dataset For "Attributes Of Phragmites Australis In Response To Climate Change Using A Common Garden Study", Stephen L. Young

The response of plant species to environmental change, including climate, is based on phenotypic plasticity. Empirical research can help in understanding how invasive plants adapt to changing conditions for successful establishment. Our goal was to assess the effect of environment of origin and ecotypic variation on phenotypic response of native and invasive Phragmites australis using morphological and ecophysiological measurements. We established a common garden study using seeds collected from Southwest, Midwest, and Great Lakes regions that crossed longitudinal and latitudinal gradients of the US. Within and end of growing season measurements were made for morphological (e.g., height, leaf size, inflorescence) …

Floral Display And Habitat Fragmentation: Effects On The Reproductive Success Of The Threatened Mass-Flowering Conospermum Undulatum (Proteaceae) [Dataset], Nicola Delnevo, Eddie Van Etten, Margaret Byrne, William Stock

Research Datasets

1. Fragmentation of natural vegetation is currently one of the largest threats to plant populations and their interactions with pollinators. Plant reproductive susceptibility to habitat fragmentation has been investigated in many species; however, the response of wild mass-flowering species is poorly known, with research limited to mainly boreal plant species.

2. Here we studied twelve remnant populations of the threatened mass-flowering shrub Conospermum undulatum in the southwest Australian biodiversity hotspot, each presenting different population size, level of isolation, and floral display. We assessed the impact of fragmentation on: 1) fruit and seed production; and 2) seed germination. To gain a …
