Developing Well Adapted Early To Midseason Cultivars Of Trifoiloum Subterraneum Ssp. Brachycalycinum, C T. De Koning, P G.H. Nichols, R L. Tuckwell, N Schubert

Development and selection of early to midseason cultivars of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) ssp. brachycalycinum has mostly involved the use of early generation selection nursery swards (F2-progeny method). Four sites were sown in the mid-North region of South Australia. At the end of 1995, the top 20 lines from each site had burrs (seed pods) sampled at random. The burr will proceed into the final early generation selection phase (1 - 2 years). Dependent on the site, many lines have out-performed the standard checkplot cultivar, Clare. High hardseed levels have also been incorporated into 1989 crossbreds.

A complex segregating mixture of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.), was sown in 1978 at Nabawa and Mt Barker, two contrasting sites in Western Australia. Seed harvested from both sites from 1980-1994 was grown out at Shenton Park in 1995, along with seed of the original mixture. Populations diverged markedly for mean days to first flowering (DFF) within three seasons. No further trends in mean DFF occurred in plants derived from the next 14 years, although standard deviation declined significantly in plants from Mt Barker. Implications Of Biomechanical Characters Of Subterranean Clover On Feeding By Redlegged Earth Mite And Intake By Sheep, D A. Henry, S K. Baker, T J. Ridsdill-Smith

The biomechanical strength of cultivars of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) that were either resistant or susceptible to feeding by redlegged earth mite was measured as the force required to penetrate their leaves with a small, tubular punch. Cotyledons and trifoliate leaves of cultivars resistant to redlegged earth mite had a higher resistance to penetration than cultivars susceptible to redlegged earth mite. Cotyledons needed a higher force to penetrate than trifoliate leaves. The possible implications for intake by ruminants of differences between the cultivars in biomechanical characters are also considered.

Some varieties of subterranean clover, notably Dinninup, Dwalganup and Yarloop, contain compounds which act like the female sex hormone oestrogen. These plant oestrogens, or "phyto-oestrogens", interfere with the fertility of sheep and depress the percentage of lambs born.

Over the past 10 years our understanding of clover infertility has increased, and we can now gauge the extent of this residual problem. In fact, there is a widespread but low-level incidence of infertility which does not greatly affect individial farms but which has an important impact on the State's sheep production.

ALTHOUGH it was first thought that all varieties of subterranean clover would cause ewe infertility, research in the last 10 to 15 years has shown that varieties differ in potency.

The relative level of potency has also been shown to remain consistent for any one variety under normal conditions.

Care and attention to detail will greatly increase the chances of establishing good subterranean clover pastures in the wheatbelt.

PASTURE ESTABLISHMENT usually takes second place to cropping in the wheatbelt, with many farmers "bunging in a bit of clover" and hoping for the best. The worst often transpires, with either patchy stands or complete failure resulting.

Using "cheap" methods of establishment is a short-sighted approach and a waste of energy and resources.
