The study focuses on the the experimental test of reforestation with Maesopsis eminii and Millettia drastica in the eco-climatic conditions of Kinshasa, with the aim of assessing the development and growth of the species through germination, and their behaviour in relation to the soil in the conditions of Kinshasa, with a view to proposing advice for responsible afforestation and reforestation. The results show that both species tend to reduce soil acidity. After cultivation, the pHs were 4.49 and 4.69 respectively for soils 1 and 2, compared with 3.98 for soil 0. This dataset encompasses information following seed germination and seedling growth of three tree species: Quercus rubra, Juglans cinerea, and Carya laciniosa. Seed sizes were recorded prior to incubation in sand, vermiculite, or without media. Seeds were then germinated with time to germination recorded in this dataset. After germination, seedlings were planted in Sugarcreek Metropark in either fall 2011 or spring 2012. One-half of seedlings were planted in tree tubes and a half without. Seedling height and diameter was recorded in June 2014 and March 2019, and death of seedlings was noted.

American chestnut was once an abundant species that dominated the Eastern U.S. deciduous forests. Although this species is currently functionally extinct due to the chestnut blight, researchers are working on blight-resistant hybrids in hopes of restoring the species. As one potential vector for chestnut reintroduction and dispersal, the reclamation of mine sites are being considered. Recent research has found that reforestation efforts on these reclaimed mine sites provide productive tree growth while also complying with mine-reclamation laws. Understanding how American chestnut performs physiologically on mine sites will aid in the restoration of this species and reclamation of mine sites.
