The purpose of the meta-analysis was to determine the impact of aquatic-based interventions on health-related fitness and skill-based outcomes for children with disabilities. PRISMA guidelines were used to complete the procedures of the meta-analysis. Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria and results indicate that overall, aquatic programming likely positively affects students with disabilities and health-related fitness outcomes. Recommendations provide direction for future studies to help improve intervention results.

Negative Social Media And Its Influence On Athlete's Performance, Bernd R. Huber Jan 2023

Negative Social Media And Its Influence On Athlete's Performance, Bernd R. Huber

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study aimed to investigate the potential impact of negative social media content on athletes' cortisol levels and subsequent performance. The study focused on the change in cortisol levels and differences in free throw performance, based on previous research findings. We hypothesized that negative social media postings would increase the stress experienced by student-athletes, resulting in elevated cortisol levels and decreased performance. Additionally, participants (n = 8) completed a questionnaire to examine the interaction between preexisting fear and the biological stress response. Contrary to expectations, there was no significant change in stress response, and negative postings did not have …

Female Collegiate Student Athletes And The Perception, Attitudes And Experiences Of Psychological And Mental Health Services, Breonna Bejaran

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study explored eighteen National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II female student athletes’ experiences and opinions of help seeking for mental health concerns. A mixed methodological design was used. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected to gain an understanding of help seeking barriers for the participant and their beliefs about help seeking barriers for their peers. Results from the qualitative data identified several themes that assisted in understanding help seeking behaviors. Data suggest that there was a lack of motivation when it came to seek mental health services as a whole by the female student athlete population. Time, lack …

Comparing Knee Joint Mechanics Across Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle, Bethany Kilpatrick Jan 2020

Comparing Knee Joint Mechanics Across Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle, Bethany Kilpatrick

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most commonly occurring knee injury. Compared to men in the same sports, females are two to eight times at higher risk for ACL injury. Research suggests that hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle (MC) play a crucial role in ACL injuries due to their effect on tendons and ligament's mechanical properties. PURPOSE: To examine knee joint laxity during dynamic movements across three-time points of the MC. METHODS: Seven young, healthy females with regular MCs performed three jump-landing tasks (double leg depth jump, single-leg lateral jump, and single-leg forward jump) across the early-follicular, …

The Effect Of Yoga On The Total Number Of Off-Task Behaviors For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ashley N. Jovick

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability. Signs will usually appear during early childhood and affect a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a ‘spectrum condition’ that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. Two major behaviors associated with ASD are poor motor skills and sensory activities.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation is to examine the effectiveness of yoga on reducing off-task behaviors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

METHODS: Off-task behavior data will be taken in Baseline and Intervention Phases. Video analysis …

The Effects Of Circuit Training On Decreasing Off-Task Behaviors For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Juan C. Hernandez Jan 2019

The Effects Of Circuit Training On Decreasing Off-Task Behaviors For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Juan C. Hernandez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disability according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Prevalence shows that 1 in 59 children are born with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and having this population engage in physical activity will reduce off-task behavior. The purpose of this study is to determine the benefits of circuit training on decreasing off-task behavior while improving health for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and encourage parents, teachers, and specialist to incorporate similar drills, activities, and exercises with the ASD population. In this study, a special education high school teacher and APE instructor will …

Children with disabilities are not participating in enough physical activity to meet the recommendations for health benefits. Parental perceptions of their child’s physical competence has a role in influencing physical activity levels. Parental perceptions can be improved through observations of their children in successful physical situations. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze change in parental perceptions of their child’s physical competence after participating in a family-centered physical activity program. Five parents with a child aged six to 21 years with a disability participated in this study. Parental perceptions were assessed with the Perceived Competence Scale for Children, …

Children and adults with disabilities are at greater risk of developing higher levels of obesity, and chronic diseases associated with obesity (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2014). Physical activity is crucial to maintaining health, mobility, and slowing disease progression for all people, especially those experiencing disability. Despite this fact, physical activity levels in individuals with disabilities are very low (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2006). Lower physical activity levels in are the result of a complex interactions of personal and environmental factors that unfold across a lifespan.
