A total of 280 pigs (DNA 241 × 600; initially 22.9 ± 0.52 lb BW) were used in a 21-d growth study to determine the available P (aP) release curve for Sunphase HT phytase (Wuhan Sunhy Biology Co., Ltd.; Wuhan, P.R. China). At approximately 19 d of age, pigs were weaned, randomly allotted to pens, and fed common starter diets. A total of 297 pigs (DNA 241 × 600; initially 8.64 ± 0.181 kg) were used in a 21-d trial to determine the effects of HiPhorius phytase on growth performance and bone characteristics. Pens of pigs were assigned to 1 of 5 treatments in a randomized complete block design with 5 pigs per pen and 12 replications per treatment. A total of 300 pigs (241 × 600 DNA; initially 13.2 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of altering the dietary acid-binding capacity-4 (ABC-4) with specialty soy protein sources or acidifiers on nursery pig performance and fecal dry matter (DM). At weaning, pigs were allotted to 1 of 5 dietary treatments. There were 5 pigs per pen and 12 replications per treatment. A total of 360 pigs (DNA 200 × 400; initially 13.8 ± 1.83 lb BW) were used in a 42-d nursery trial to determine the effects of the addition of an environmental enrichment, in the form of ropes tied to the feeder dividers, on feed intake and growth performance of weanling pigs. Three hundred-fifty pigs (initially 26.2 ± 1.23 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of bone and analytical methods on the assessment of bone mineralization response to dietary P and vitamin D in nursery pigs. Pens of pigs (5 or 6 pigs/pen) were randomized to 6 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design with 10 pens per treatment. Treatments were formulated to have varying levels of P, phytase, and vitamin D to provide differences in bone characteristics. A total of 360 pigs (200 × 400, DNA; initially 13.8 ± 1.83 lb BW) were used in a 42-d nursery trial to evaluate multiple procedures to allot pigs to pens and pens to treatment in swine nursery research. During the spring of 2021, the Kansas State University Swine Early Wean Facility (SEW) experienced a notable increase in piglet morbidity and mortality. Piglet diarrhea was observed approximately 2 to 3 weeks post-weaning along with an increase in number of sudden mortalities. Necropsy samples were collected and confirmed for clinical diagnosis ofEscherichia coliK88 infection by the Kansas State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.E. coliK88 can negatively impact performance of pigs and typically manifests as diarrhea, which can continue until death because of severe dehydration and metabolic acidosis or from terminal septicemia. Solvent-extracted soybean meal (SSBM) is typically used as the primary protein source in swine diets in the United States. Mechanically extracted or expelled soybean meal (MSBM) typically has increased concentrations of fat and decreased concentrations of essential AA compared to SSBM, but MSBM has been demonstrated to have improved AA digestibility. Solvent-extracted soybean meal (SSBM) is typically used as the primary protein source in swine diets in the United States. Mechanically extracted or expelled soybean meal (MSBM) typically has increased concentrations of fat and decreased concentrations of essential AA compared to SSBM, but MSBM has been demonstrated to have improved AA digestibility. This study aimed to estimate the NE value of MSBM relative to SSBM and to determine its effects on growth performance of late nursery pigs. Pelleting swine feed and the use of crystalline amino acids and by-product ingredients can potentially create ideal conditions that further facilitate the Maillard browning reaction. The Maillard reaction combines an amino group of a free amino acid and a carbonyl group of a reducing sugar (RS), making the amino acid less available. A total of 330 weaned pigs (Line 241 × 600, DNA; initially 12.7 lb BW) were used in a 38-d nursery study to evaluate previous sow treatment (control vs. yeast additives) and nursery diets with different combinations of direct fed microbials (DFMs; Phileo by Lesaffre, Milwaukee, WI) on nursery pig growth performance. A total of 1,056 pigs (PIC TR4 × (Fast LW × PIC L02)), originating from an active PRRSV-positive sow farm, were used in a 46-d study to evaluate growth performance of nursery pigs fed diets containing increasing levels of O3 Trial Feed, a source of omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid). The objective of this study was to determine the effects on growth performance in nursery pigs that is linked to the conditioning temperature and die specifications used during the feed pelleting process. A total of 315 barrows (DNA; 200 × 400; initial BW 13.2 lb) were used in a 35-d growth trial.
