The effects of parity and stage of gestation on female growth criteria and reproductive performance were evaluated at a commercial sow farm. A total of 712 females (Camborough, PIC, Hendersonville, TN) were group-housed and individually fed with electronic sow feeders. Gilts (parity 1) and sows were offered 4.4 and 5.0 lb of feed per day (4.7 and 5.3 Mcal NE per d), respectively. Females were moved from the breeding stall to pens on d 5 of gestation. A total of 612 nursery pigs (21-d of age; Line 241 × 600; DNA, Columbus, NE) were used in two 44-d experiments to determine effects of antibiotic or different probiotic products on nursery pig performance and fecal consistency. In Experiment 1, 297 pigs (initially 12.8 lb) were used with 6 replications per treatment and 5 or 6 pigs per pen. A total of 1,235 nursery pigs (PIC 359 × 1050; initially 26.9 lb BW) were used in a 28-d study evaluating the effects of crystalline amino acid concentrations with or without formaldehyde treatment of diets on nursery pig growth performance, feed bacteria concentration, lysine content, and fecal microbial diversity. A variable frequency drive can be installed on the motor of a hammermill to adjust motor speed and ultimately hammer tip speed. Brahman cattle are widely known for their ability to tolerate hot and humid climates as well as for their insect and parasite resistance. An estimated 40% of all beef cows in the United States are located in the southern region, which has a relatively hot climate. Historically, many of these beef cows have had at least some Brahman influence. A total of 108 steers grazing smooth bromegrass pastures were used to evaluate the effects of supplemental energy source on available forage, grazing gains, subsequent finishing gains, and carcass characteristics in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Supplementation treatments evaluated were: no supplement, a supplement with starch as the primary source of energy, and a supplement with fat as the primary source of energy. Supplements were formulated to provide the same quantity of protein and energy per head daily. Supplementation with the starch-based or fat-based supplement during the grazing phase resulted in higher (P<0.05) grazing gains than feeding no supplement during all three years. A total of 280 mixed black yearling steers were used to compare grazing and subsequent finishing performance from pastures with ‘MaxQ’ tall fescue, a wheat-bermudagrass double-crop system, or a wheat-crabgrass double-crop system in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Daily gains of steers that grazed MaxQ fescue, wheatbermudagrass, or wheat-crabgrass were similar (P>0.05) in 2010 and 2016. Medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) are six to twelve carbon length molecules that have shown significant promise as potential mitigants of biological hazards in feed and feed ingredients. The use of residual duration of activity approaches, such as MCFA, have significant advantages compared to point-in-time mitigation strategies. Horn flies (Haematobia irritans(L.)) are considered the most important external parasite that negatively affects pasture-based beef systems with losses estimated to exceed $1 billion annually to the U.S. beef industry. Control strategies have relied heavily on insecticide applications to control horn flies and are implemented when the economic threshold of 200 flies/animal have been exceeded. When horn fly populations are maintained below 200 flies/animal by treating them with insecticides then the level of stress annoyance behaviors such as leg stomping, head throwing, and skin twitching decreases while grazing increases. Distillers grains are an excellent energy and protein feed source for beef cattle. Corn distillers grains have been fed to beef cattle for many years, but sorghum distillers grains are becoming more popular and may be more cost effective than corn. Steam-flaked corn is commonly fed in feedlot finishing diets because steam-flaking improves starch availability and nutrient utilization, thus improving the overall feeding value of corn. In most operations which utilize steam-flaked corn, grain is processed to a pre-determined flake density by setting the rolls to a specific separation distance and using tension to hold rolls together. Lactic acid spray washes are widely used as an antimicrobial intervention in the beef industry. Sprays are typically applied to the exterior of carcasses and subprimal cuts to reduce or eliminate potential pathogenic bacteria. While the efficacy of these washes has been proven, other questions remain about their effect on color attributes of meat when applied to subprimal cuts. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a lactic acid subprimal wash on the color stability of beef chuck rolls.

Ground beef is considered one of the major sources of animal protein in the U.S., accounting for approximately 40% of beef consumption per capita (USDA, 2011). Consumers’ concern about animal welfare, sustainable production, and low fat products has influenced purchasing decisions, resulting in an increased demand for grass-fed ground beef (U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing Service, 2007). Grass-fed cattle are fed natural based forages or grass-hay, thus resulting in a higher deposition of omega-3 fatty acids in meat. Liver abscesses are a significant problem in the United States’ cattle feeding industry, costing the industry an estimated $15.9 million annually in liver condemnation, trim losses, and reduced carcass weights and quality grades. Recent reported incidence rates of liver abscesses at slaughter range from 10 to 20%. Liver abscess incidence may be influenced by a number of factors including: breed, gender, diet, days on feed, cattle type, season, and geographical location. Liver abscesses typically occur secondary to rumen insults caused by acidosis or rumenitis. A single load of corn naturally contaminated with aflatoxin (1,074 ppb), fumonisin (8.3 ppm), and ochratoxin A (206 ppb) was procured from central Oklahoma to evaluate the role of cleaning to remove mycotoxin contamination in corn. Corn was divided into twenty 333-lb lots, which were then cleaned using an EBM Gentle Roll corn cleaner to remove overs (material>1/2 inches) and unders (material<3/16 inches). The resultant 4 treatments included: 1) uncleaned corn; 2) overs from cleaned corn; 3) cleaned corn; and 4) unders from cleaned corn. Samples of each fraction were analyzed for mycotoxin content using multiclass liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry.

Cleaning generated approximately 6% screenings (unders + overs), and reduced (P<0.05) aflatoxin by an average of 26%. Cleaning also reduced (P<0.05) fumonisin by 45%, but did not impact ochratoxin A. Unders had nearly 4 times the aflatoxin and 7.5 times the fumonisin as the uncleaned corn. In conclusion, cleaning corn may substantially reduce mycotoxin contamination, but the resultant screenings should be used cautiously.

A total of 700 nursery pigs (PIC C-29 × 1050 × 1040, initially 13.6 lb BW) were used in a 42-d growth study to determine the effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG; Ajinomoto Heartland, LLC, Chicago, IL) on growth performance. Pigs were fed 1 of 5 dietary treatments: 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0% MSG. Experimental diets were fed in three phases from d 0 to 14, 14 to 28, and 28 to 42. The objective of this study was to determine the standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys requirement for growth and carcass performance of 225- to 280-lb finishing pigs. A total of 253 pigs (DNA 600 × 241, initially 224.9 lb BW) were used in a 23-d trial. Pens were blocked by BW and were randomly assigned to diets with 7 or 8 pigs per pen and 8 pens per treatment in a randomized complete block design. Diets were corn and soybean meal-based and fed in meal form. Dietary treatments consisted of 0.45, 0.55, 0.65, or 0.75% SID Lys. Increasing SID Lys increased …

A total of 317 pigs (DNA 600 × 241, initially 108.6 lb) were used in a 87-d trial to determine the effects of two essential oil mixtures tested individually and in combination on growth performance and carcass characteristics of growing-finishing pigs from 108 to 285 lb. Pens of 9 or 10 mixed-gender pigs were allotted by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments with 8 replications per treatment. A total of 1,134 nursery pigs (PIC 359 × 1050, 10.9 ± 0.46 lb BW) were used in a 42-d growth study to determine the effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG), AminoGut, and glutamine (Ajinomoto Heartland, LLC, Chicago, IL) on growth performance. A total of 2,430 pigs (PIC 359 × 1050; initial BW = 64.6 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of dietary chromium propionate (Cr; KemTRACE Cr, Kemin Industries, Des Moines, IA) and aYucca schidigera-based extract (Micro-Aid; DPI Global, Porterville, CA) on growth performance of finishing pigs housed in commercial conditions. A total of 710 mixed parity sows (Line 241; DNA, Columbus, NE) were used in a 21-d study to determine the effect of standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) intake during lactation on sow and litter performance and subsequent reproductive performance of primiparous and multiparous sows housed in a commercial production system. On d 112 of gestation, females were weighed and blocked by BW within expected farrowing date and parity (1 to 7) and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments within blocks. A total of 1,215 pigs (PIC 337 × 1050; initial BW 11.3 lb) were used in a 43-d growth trial evaluating the effects of feeding increasing HP 300 (Hamlet Protein, Findlay, OH) on nursery pig performance. Pigs were weaned at 16 to 19 d of age and placed in pens, with each pen containing a mix of barrows and gilts. Pens of pigs were weighed and allotted by BW to 1 of 5 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design with 27 pigs per pen and 9 pens per treatment.
