Ecophysiology Of Oxygen Supply In Cephalopods, Matthew A. Birk

Cephalopods are an important component of many marine ecosystems and support large fisheries. Their active lifestyles and complex behaviors are thought to be driven in large part by competition with fishes. Although cephalopods appear to compete successfully with fishes, a number of their important physiological traits are arguably inferior, such as an inefficient mode of locomotion via jet propulsion and a phylogenetically limited means of blood-borne gas transport. In active shallow-water cephalopods, these traits result in an interesting combination of very high oxygen demand and limited oxygen supply. In 2014, King County initiated a long-term monitoring program of marine tissue contaminants. The program monitors important prey of marine mammals and species collected for human consumption: Dungeness and Red rock crab, English sole, market squid, and rockfish (brown, copper, and quillback). Sampling locations include Elliott Bay and central Puget Sound sites within King County waters. Generally, PCB concentrations in all species were higher in Elliott Bay compared to other King County locations. With a few exceptions, PBDE concentrations in all species generally exhibited less of a distinct geographical pattern than was observed for PCBs. Contaminant data for Puget Sound …

The majority of cephalopods are thought to have limitations arising from physiology and locomotion that exclude them from shallow, highly variable, euryhaline environments. The brief squid Lolliguncula brevis may be a notable exception because it tolerates low salinities, withstands a wide range of environmental conditions, and swims readily in shallow water. Little is known about the distribution of L. brevis in Chesapeake Bay, a diverse and highly variable estuary. Therefore, a survey of L. brevis was conducted in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay from 1993 to 1997 using a 9.1 m otter trawl, and the effects of selected factors …
