The Effect Of Exercise On Metabolic Rate With Time In Overweight And Normal Weight Subjects, Roberta Jewell Keswick

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous studies in the Lome Linda University laboratory showed that obese subjects on an exercise program lost approximately one pound more per week as compared to a non-exercise group. Energy expenditure calculations of the exercise did not account for the total caloric deficit required to lose the additional pound. The present study was designed to investigate changes in BMR and metabolic rate with time for normal weight and overweight subjects involved in a practical exercise program. The relationship of changes in BMR and metabolic rate in coping with the problems of obesity were also studied.

Fifteen subjects, eight overweight and …

Nutritive Values Of Russian Wildrye, Crested Wheatgrass, And Intermediate Wheatgrass Grazed By Cattle On Utah Foothill Ranges, George W. Mitchell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A comparative index to digestible nutrients was established for Russian wildrye, crested wheatgrass, and intermediate wheatgrass seeded on foothill areas of Utah. The nutritive values of these grasses were compared by the lignin ratio method, the chlorophyllan ratio method, and the in vivo rumen bag process.

Average digestion coefficients computed by the lignin ratio method for dry matter, ether extract, cellulose, and gross energy were highest for intermediate wheatgrass. Protein was more digestible for Russian wildrye. Digestible energy was adequate in all species to meet requirements for late lactation.

Results from the chlorophyllan ratio method were excessively high and were …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Saponin Content In Du Puits Alfalfa Foliage (Medicago Sativa L.) With Trichoderma, Wang Li-Chun May 1969

Quantitative Evaluation Of Saponin Content In Du Puits Alfalfa Foliage (Medicago Sativa L.) With Trichoderma, Wang Li-Chun

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Selections in Du Puits alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ) were evaluated for saponin content. The data obtained from the Trichoderma bioassay were converted to saponin values by regressions and standard curves. It was necessary to adjust the concentration of alfalfa extract in the bioassay so that the saponin content in alfalfa was estimated in that portion of the curve showing a marked response to saponin. A different regression was established for each group of low and high saponin plants of Du Puits alfalfa. The standard curve prepared with extract of Du Puits alfalfa used on the basis of its …

The Utilization Of The Sulfur Of Sulfolipid By The Albino Rat, Susan Tredinnick Bowling May 1969

The Utilization Of The Sulfur Of Sulfolipid By The Albino Rat, Susan Tredinnick Bowling

Masters Theses

35S-sulfolipid was isolated from weanling rat brains and incorporated into a diet which was fed to rats for a period of nine days during which time urine and feces were collected daily in the initial study and continuously during the second phase of the study. The 35S-sulfur from the sulfolipid was poorly absorbed, 20 percent of the ingested dose was excreted in the urine and 55 percent in the feces. The amount of radiation excreted in the urine plateaued after the third day with no significant difference occurring until the ninth day when there was a 96 percent …
