Cardiovascular disease is the leading global cause of mortality, often resulting in heart attacks and strokes due to obstructed blood flow to vital organs. The risk of these events is influenced by dietary choices, smoking, and physical activity. Despite preventative measures, the impact of diet and lifestyle on cardiovascular health varies across ethnic groups. This fact sheet explores traditional foods and dishes, eating patterns, health beliefs and current food practices within Japanese culture. Included within the educational material is an exploration of staple foods, symbolic foods, and foods with special meaning. The traditional Japanese diet, called Washoku, is is listed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage category. Traditional eating patterns, including use of utensils like chopsticks and bowls called “wan”, are identified. Collegiate athletes are a population that tends to experience high levels of both acute and chronic illness, especially upper respiratory-related infections due to poor nutrition, poor rest and recovery and tendencies to over-train. The amount of high-intensity training sessions that occur in succession can lead to chronic immunosuppression in collegiate athletes. Chronic or acute Illness can lead to missed training or competitive opportunities and can negatively influence a student-athlete’s success and overall health.

In an initial effort to devise a rapid assessment alternative that would provide a reliable estimate of an individual's usual dietary pattern, a Predicted Food List (estimated, abbreviated food frequency), an Actual Food List (recorded, truncated food frequency), and a Typical Diet Day (foods perceived as commonly consumed in a 24-hour period) were compared with a 75-day food record. Overall, the Predicted Food List appeared to be the best tool for depicting an individual's usual food intake.
